York Region Transit/Viva to Launch Mobile Fare Payments on July 1

York Region Transit/Viva has announced they will move to paperless tickets and passes starting July 1, 2017. The change will also include a new mobile payment app called YRT/Viva Pay, available for iOS and Android users soon.

YRT/Viva says users can pay for fares with a PRESTO card or the upcoming YRT/Viva mobile app, with the latter releasing on July 1 in the App Store (iOS 8+ required) and Google Play (Android 4.4+ required). Cash fares will remain.

Not much has been shared yet about the YRT/Viva Pay app, other than it “will allow customers to purchase YRT/Viva fares anywhere, anytime, through the convenience of their smartphones.”

Apple is set to allow developer apps on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to read NFC NDEF tags. However, the YRT/Viva Pay iOS app most likely will not have this available.

Let us know if you’re looking to making mobile fare payments on YRT/Viva. We’ll find out more about how the iOS app will work on July 1, 2017.

Thanks Donald!
