CAPCOM Arcade for iPhone: Arcade Classics for Free

The days of arcade gaming were the best. Countless hours wasted by spending quarters to play classics like Street Fighter II and “giving the second round” to strangers. CAPCOM has released CAPCOM Arcade, which ports over four classic games onto the iPhone for the first time.

Here’s the iTunes description:

Your favorite Capcom arcade games are back and better than ever in these near perfect ports of the originals. Play Street Fighter II, the original Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, 1942 and Commando in their entirety for the first time on iPhone and iPod touch.

Play THREE TIMES every day for FREE.

If you’d like to play more often, additional “Tokens” can be purchased in the Capcom Arcade, or if there is a game you truly love, buy a game’s “Arcade Machine” outright for unlimited play and maximum value.

Features:

• Play the classic arcade versions of Street Fighter II, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, 1942 and Commando in their entirety
• New games will be added every month to the Capcom Arcade
• Two modes of play – “iPhone” mode for more casual gamers and “Classic” mode for purists
• Special premium DLC “cheats” that unlock special abilities, upgrades and weapons

How this free app works is you get three free ‘tokens’ everyday to play four arcade classics. I tested out Street Fighter II and it was nostalgic seeing the graphics and opening scenes all over again. SFII was never meant to be played with touch controls so it is tricky at first to get used to.

If you use up your free tokens, you can purchase more right on the spot–like being at the arcade. Although the app is free, there is a misplaced ad within the game that hides part of the screen. It’s definitely out of place and takes away from the CAPCOM Arcade experience.

Here are some screenshots of me as Ken beating Ryu in SFII:

Although there could be more free tokens, CAPCOM Arcade is a light way to kill some time with classic arcade games. The touch controls can be difficult to get used to, but the feeling of nostalgia is more than worth it. Let me know how you like CAPCOM Arcade.
