DRACO Allure A: Aluminum Bumper Case for iPhone 5/5S [REVIEW]

To date, we have reviewed a bunch of iPhone bumpers from Draco Design, including the DRACO IV for iPhone 4/4S and the DRACO V for iPhone 5/5s, both of which have been my personal favourites. While keeping the same curvy ergonomics, Draco has come up with an even better product this time, especially in terms of protection, called the DRACO Allure A ($89.99), which is a two-piece aluminum/polycarbonate bumper case for the iPhone 5/5s. Full review after the jump.

Unlike its predecessors, the Allure A is an aluminum bumper case that not only offers protective coverage for the sides, but also features an interchangeable polycarbonate back cover for superior bump and scratch protection. The case is offered in a host of colour combinations. The one we’re looking at today is the Gold/Black version to go with the gold iPhone 5s.

As with the company’s bumper-only offerings, the Allure A case also ships with a metallic silent switch and a power button, which even though are a bit tricky to install, work pretty well once in place. The volume rocker however is integrated within the aluminum part of the case and offers excellent tactility. Best of all, the Allure A does not require any screws for installation or removal. You simply place the iPhone in between the upper aluminum bumper and the polycarbonate back plate, insert the metallic buttons and press gently to complete the assembly. Taking the case apart is equally easy.

Once installed, the Allure A instantly becomes an eye catcher. The CNC machined aircraft grade aluminum looks great in gold, while a contrasting black carbon fiber patterned plate adds texture and grip to Allure’s curvy ergonomics. As mentioned before, the scratch-resistant UV coated back plate can be interchanged with a variety of colours and patterns offered by Draco. And since the back cover is very thin and light weight, it adds virtually no bulk to the iPhone 5s.

Overall, the DRACO Allure A is a gorgeous looking case that betters its predecessors with screw-less installation and all round protection, while keeping a similar price point. For those looking for a cheaper alternative, check out the DRACO Allure P ($29.99) that replaces the aluminum with a polycarbonate top shell and sells for three times less.
