Fring Updated: Now With iPhone Video Calls via Skype!

When I first laid my grubby fingers on Fring, I knew the company behind this program was onto something. My first download of Fring was on 1.1.4 firmware (yes, I said 1.1.4!) via Installer. Next up, there was the official Fring iPhone app. Well today, the makers of Fring have announced something pretty awesome: iPhone video calls!

Fring Updated to Bring Phone Video Calls

Today’s Fring update brings VIDEO calls to the iPhone via Skype! That means the iPhone/iPod Touch can now accept incoming Skype Video Calls! Want to see what’s going on at home while you’re at work? Tell your loved ones to call you! The only downside is the iPhone doesn’t have a front facing camera (yet!), but we can only hope for one when the next iPhone is released in 2010.

I had my good friend Mason Stubel (who I might add recently bought his first Mac–a 27″ iMac!) test out the latest version of Fring with me. I launched Fring, then signed into Skype. Mason then requested a video voice call and I accepted. I could now see Mason on my iPhone! See below (he’s holding up his iPod Touch with iPhoneinCanada.ca loaded):

Fring is limited to WiFi only, but the workaround is possible over 3G by downloading 3G Unrestrictor on a jailbroken iPhone. Using this little hack you can also make Skype calls over 3G, and call unlimited to Canada/USA for $3/month.

All we need now is for Apple to make a front facing camera for iChat! I can see this coming in the next iPhone coming our way in summer of 2010!
