Here’s How the ECG App Works on Apple Watch Series 4 [VIDEOS]

Apple released watchOS 5.1.2 yesterday, which unleashed the ECG app for Apple Watch Series 4 customers in the United States.

Many Apple Watch Series 4 users have shared demonstrations of how the ECG app works. Below are a couple videos worth watching, showing a clear walkthrough of the feature.

For Canadians, Apple never advertised the ECG feature on Apple.ca, as it still requires approval from Health Canada.

The federal authority has been responding to users inquiring about ECG and Apple Watch Series 4 by saying back in September, “Health Canada has not received a medical device application for the Apple Watch Series 4 with the EKG feature – but we can deliver a decision as quickly as 15 calendar days after a company applies.”

The ‘region trick’ to get Apple News in Canada does not work for the ECG app, as it’s limited to Apple Watch models purchased in the U.S.

Previously, expectations were set when it was assumed Apple Watch users would be able to access the ECG app by changing their region. But that turned out to be false, as Apple is limiting the feature based on device identifiers in the U.S.



Apple did previously tell media outlets such as Bloomberg it has plans to expand the ECG feature worldwide. The publication previously reported in September, “Apple, meanwhile, says it plans to work hard with other regulators, including Health Canada, to bring its wrist-worn ECG to worldwide markets.”

In the future, Apple could toggle on the feature for Apple Watch Series 4 users in Canada, but who knows when that will be. In the meantime, Series 4 users can only stare at the ECG hardware on their Apple Watch, and hope the feature comes soon.
