xGPS 1.2 Released, 2.0 Upcoming Preview

Hey everyone happy Saturday! Today I’m going to talk about the recent update to xGPS, which was released earlier this week. I was going to post about it earlier but I wanted to actually test it while driving in my car.

xGPS is only available for jailbroken iPhones and it is a free turn-by-turn GPS app. When the original version was released on Cydia, the developers showed us how the 1.2 beta would include the voice prompts. Well, the 1.2 update has arrived for those who haven’t found out already. From the xGPS blog:

The new major improvement in this version is the voice instructions support. It uses a Text-To-Speech engine to convert text instructions to sound. So there is no way to change the voice yourself as it is not pre-recorded sound. We are working on a cleaner English voice which should be included in the subsequent releases.

I tested out the newest added feature, which was the voice prompts. I can say they worked well, but the volume is definitely not loud enough if you’re listening to music in the car. Some ideas I’d like to add to my wishlist would be route previews and the ability to drop pin.

xGPS Improvements Coming: 2.0 in the Near Future

The developers are still working on xGPS and newer versions will have new features. Here are some possible screens of 2.0 coming soon:

Stupid phone warranty, I would gladly pay 40 bucks for this on the iphone store if you can convince apple that they are retarded. Also a female voice would be nice, having a guy tell me what to do is just odd.

Looking good so far. Tried it out for a few days and does the job this sort of thing should’ve been built into gmaps from the start. I’d be keen to see poi’s like speed cams etc as you obviously can’t run xgps and something like nmobile at the same time. Have yet to use xgps on the motorway yet tho.

I haven’t tested 1.2 yet. But personally from my experience I’ve noticed that the offline maps you download are a lot bigger then the old version ones. But other then that great application saves like 300$ from buying a Garmin

I agree, the volume is WAY too soft with the voice directions. I actually thought the voice directions weren’t working at all until I had the phone right up to my ear with the volume all the way up!

You can unjailbreak easily enough. Only problem I have heard was from people who installed custom operator logos

Damn! I re-jailbroke my phone earlier this week and tried xGPS but I think it was before the update…then I had some issues with the jailbreak and took it off restoring my phone and now I cant try it. Dang. Sounds sweet though. Why won’t apple smarten up and hire people making things like this. Sigh. Have a great day everyone

You can easily unjailbreak your phone. Plug it in and load up itunes…then just click restore and restore your phone to factory or restore it to a backup you had before you jailbroke it. Did it this week. Only shitty thing is all your icons are all mixed up so you have to re-organize.

It’s down to the licencing of the maps but I don’t get why tomtom aren’t allowed to release on iPhone using their own maps. Surely it’s not beyond the wit of apple to allow sync of a new type of file (ty maps) via iTunes. Maybe it’s just tomtom won’t let apple take 30%! Got an faint hope that with the predicted 3.0 on the way apple might start to listen and give us some kind of nav or copy paste. Or better still let xgps release properly on app store so you don’t have to jailbreak.

this a replacement for my gps unit ?? No way. I would like to see offline route calculation. Perhaps vector maps so they are smaller. I downloaded the naps using the of app xgps manager and it’s faster at least. Let’s you use the polygon selection and zoom level selection. If you select a region too big then good luck. The of app will take ions to download it.

I don’t see this being good without offline map calculation. All routes have to calculated ahead of time with an Internet connection.

You like the voices?? They are a joke. Can barely understand the robotic sound to it.

If your phone breaks while it is jailbroken, how are you supposed to restore it before giving it back to Apple? Oh, that’s right. You can’t.

@ _Shorty: If your phone is physically damaged, it’s not covered by warranty. If your phone requires a flash, they won’t know that you jailbroke it. If your phone does not require a flash, you can restore it yourself removing the jailbreak.

I’m not saying you should jailbreak your phone if the costs outweigh the benefits for you. I’m saying you should stop spreading paranoia so that other people can make a clear decision on whether or not they decide to jailbreak.
