Is Your iOS 4.3.3 iPhone Signal Cutting Out On Fido?

After recently updating my (non-jailbroken) iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3.3, I immediately noticed that my Fido signal drops out completely and then resets itself immediately about twice every 24 hours.

For example, the Fido signal will do something like this:

  • 5 Bars > 4 Bars > 3 Bars > 2 Bars > 1 Bar > No Bars/Fido word/3G disappears > One second delay > 5 Bars/3G/Fido word back instantly

If I’m in an app checking mail, or any other app using an Internet connection, the popup “could not activate cellular data network” would appear during the one second delay mentioned above.

After swapping SIM cards, doing various restores and resets, the issue continues.

As a blogger, I am constantly using my iPhone. I’m also always watching my signal bars, especially with the iPhone 4. So when I see my bars drop and cellular network errors appear, I notice immediately. Also, I have not experienced this in previous versions of iOS.

Curious to get more information, I sourced a bunch of my local Vancouver colleagues who all use a non-jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 iPhone 4 on Fido. I spoke to 23 people and all have experienced the same behaviour as me. I also spoke to folks on Rogers and Telus, but they did not report any unusual findings.

So, I come to you Community with this query:

  • Are you on Fido, using a non-jailbroken iPhone on iOS 4.3.3 and experiencing what I detailed above?

Or

  • Are you on another carrier using a non-jailbroken iPhone on iOS 4.3.3 and experiencing what I detailed above?

The photo below is me just catching the pop-up error about to show up and signal cutting out:

  • Darrinbean

I have experienced exactly the same thing on a non-jailbroken iPhone 4 bought unlocked from Apple. It’s frustrating.

  • Dkishome

We have two iPhones on Rogers network also running the latest iOS and have been getting the no active cell network error messages.I have restored both iPhones how ever the message still keeps popping up. Now I will call Rogers for discounts on service…Thanks..

  • Oliver

I noticed the same thing on my new iPad 2 on Rogers & 4.3.3

  • Fraser McPherson

    Same problem on Fido!

  • Adamo

Same Problem On Fido and Un-Jailbroken… Its quite annoying.

  • Did it work?

  • Anonymous

I actually got better reception on 4.3.3 on Rogers.

  • I have been having this issue with my non-jailbroken 3GS 4.3.3 on Bell.

  • I have been having this issue for a while now. Almost six months. Really doesn’t bother me

  • Mhtrick

U might wanna try turning location off …

  • iphonelover

Just for interest’s sake, I’m on Fido with a 3GS on iOS 4.0.1 jailbroken and unlocked and have no issues.

  • Anonymous

I’m have noticed this issue as well. I have not upgraded from 4.3.2 yet so I don’t think it’s the update.

  • Seeeen

Jb iPhone 4 on 4.3.1 on fido n the 3G cuts out sometimes n takes about 5 mins to connect.

  • Anonymous

I am on Rogers and am seeing the same issue in the Vancouver area.

  • Wuju

I experienced something similar too. It seems Fido signal sometime drops out for no apparent reason. I thought it might have something to do with my jailbroken iPhone. I guess this is happening to many even without jailbroken phones. Like to know what Fido/Apple going to do.

  • Dkishome

Rogers and I have been together for for 15 years now. Its a give and take relationship so any chance I get to take I always take advantage of it. This time I needed more minutes to use a month..so it worked for me.

This happens on my iPhone 4 (factory unlocked) too and I’m with BELL! I noticed this since updating to 4.3.2.

    iOS: 4.3.3
    iPhone: 4 factory unlocked
    Carrier: Bell

  • Barrettneil

On Fido in Ontario and have been experiencing this well before 4.3.3. Been at least 6 months and sometimes have to turn airplane mode on then off to get a signal back

  • I am with Rogers (non Jail Broken), and have been experiencing the same thing since updating to 4.3.3. I’ve been waiting for you to post about the issue as I figured I couldn’t be alone.

  • Scott

This is happening on my Rogers (recently jail broken) device running iOS 4.3.2. It started happening when I upgraded to 4.3.2 and continued even after I jail broke my device.

  • Dr.Phil

Having the exact same issue as described since updating. Any solutions available?

  • Sam Kell

Same for me for the last two updates …… New iPhone On the way from Rogers

Does anyone know the correct carrier version number required for ios 4.3.3 and the Rogers network?

  • Rick Lang

@BrodieTheDog I agree it’s not the update as I’m on an iPhone 3G IOS 4.2.1 and have experienced this carrier signal loss at least twice a day sometimes much more often for a few weeks now. I thought it was only Fido but it appears to affect others. It can’t be sunspot activity but it may be something beyond Fido. But what?

Yes!!! Its a lil ridiculous I noticed it on iOS 4.3.2 and now more than a few times a day it’s a pain in the ass

Mines fine and i am with fido as well great reception and works the same as before.

  • Dj C

I get the occasional drops, I just reboot my iPhone 4… then I’m good to go… but yes.. I do get drops…

  • I’m on Rogers, but am running 4.3.2 still. over the past week, i’ve noticed my signal drop completely and 3G disappear as well (to the point where it says Searching… for a signal). so far it’s happened twice during this week

  • Orrisachar

Dude I have the EXACT SAME thing happening to me…but I only updated yesterday….perhaps it’s a fido problem?

  • guypaten

iPhone 4, latest iOs on FIdo in Mtl area and have not seen this problem at all.

  • Gerry18

I was disconnected from a call last weekend twice, but ever since, it’s been fine.

  • Sina

I have not updated to 4.3.3, but I had this issue for the first 5 or 6 months since I got my iPhone, which was really a pain in the ass! But starting from 2 or 3 months ago it has never happened again.

My guess is the issue is related to Fido network, not the iOS or the hardware.

  • Bordel

  • I also have this problem. I’m from Montreal with Iphone 4 ios 4.3.3 unlocked(Apple) with fido
But it was start minimum 6 months ago!
I’d changed already my phone with the Genius. Changed my micro-sim. Same problem…

  • I am having this problem since the weekend… I am on Rogers though…

  • Yamadorishitate

I have had this issue since the 4.2 update. I’m on Telus and I never had such a problem for the first six months of owning my iphone 4. And no, it’s not jailbroken.

  • Marwan

I have this issue too after upgrading to 4-3-3 with fido

  • Aaaa

The screenshot is a Safari page.

  • Ed Lau

Not limited to 4.3.3. I still use 4.1 and this happens all the time recently. I assumed it was a problem on their end.

  • A Benami

Agreed. It’s been since December or so, find that I have to Airplane it as well. Though I should add, I don’t think this is limited to the iPhone 4 as it happens on my 3GS.

  • med86

I’ve had this problem for quite some time now (non jailbroken iPhone 4 Rogers), but only the bars issue.. After updating to 4.3.3 I have noticed a few times that I’ll get the “couldn’t activate cell data network” popup as well and by the time I’ve looked up at the bars theyll be flashing back on again. But like some others said, I’ve had it in different manifestations for ages now, doesn’t bother me anymore.

  • Vivek

I have this issue too after upgrading to 4-3-3 with fido (non jailbroken iPhone 4 FIDO)

  • Don

I’m on Rogers (Ottawa) and I’ve noticed this issue for the past 2 months or so. Running the latest OS now…

  • Steve

I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4 (4.3.2) on Fido and I haven’t seen this issue, however I updated my girlfriends locked iPhone 4 to 4.3.2 a couple of days before 4.3.3 came out and she is now experiencing this problem.

We have one phone experiencing this on 4.3.2 on Fido in Ottawa

  • I have an unlocked iPhone 4 bought from apple…non-jb… With the latest iOS version.. I’m in Montreal on Fido… I never encountered this problem…

  • Mike

Yup, on Rogers. Has been happening a lot recently. Annoying.

  • Red_star_rocks

Happens all the time on Rogers! Don’t bother calling though, they’ll just deny it! I’m running 4.3.1 and have been experiencing this for about 2 months now!

  • Dejiadeoni

I have ben experienceing this for about 3 weeks now , si therany hope it will get better. my fido plan is from ontario and currently in transit in saskatchewan. at first , i thought it was because i was out of province is why my reception and network is acting up.

  • Bsp9493

4.3.3 bell locked non jailbroken happening for about a month

4.3.3 Rogers factory unlocked non jailbroken just started

    Kelowna , BC

  • Drocass

On Rogers too. On 3 to 4 bars of reception to zero. Cannot connect error. Then seconds later back up to full reception. Only once or twice every couple days but still enough to make me question if it was my phone or the network

  • Bordel

Yes, that’s kinda obvious. What I mean is what RSS reader is being used through safari? I use google reader through safari and it doesn’t look as slick as this?

I have the same issue in Montreal’s Down Town area, near Old Port. I had it before the update, but with the update it is more evident.

  • Kimmiekav

I’m on bell in Ontario an since upgrade to 4.3.1 I’ve had the same issue daily btwn 5 and 7 pm every day. I’ve been taking note of the time as I’m home from work and on my phone. Very annoying seeing the ‘cannot activate cellular network data’ msg

  • Rudy

I am having the same problem, it just happened to me. Fido iPhone 4 32GB iOS 4.3.3

    So annoying, I hope there’s a fix

  • Tom

I am on Fido in Victoria with factory unlocked (and unjailbroken) iphone 4 on iOS 4.3.3 and I have not seen this signal issue. But I will keep watching it now.

I switched Carrier to Automatic to avoid the insane signal lost messages, which interrupt music play all the time) and a bad side effect is that in some areas of Victoria (along the beach by Beacon hill) all of a sudden I am on ATT (we are across The Salish Sea from The US). So that is not a very good solution.

  • Bryan

Yes. Same exact issues. I’m on Fido, iPhone 4, unlocked (bought from Apple) and not jailbroken. 4.3.3 iOS

  • invx

That’s not RSS, it’s the iPiC mobile site! 😉

  • Kevin Cassar

    On CLARO!

  • Kendra Getty

I get the same thing all the time on my 3GS non jailbroken iPhone. I’m on Rogers, and finally broke down and called them today and was told I have an old sim card. This problem just started about a month or so ago. I’m going to get a new sim card tomorrow and see if that helps…

  • I never had this problem…
But last Friday I was in downtown Montreal…
Signal went from full, to zero and full again. This never happened to me before.

  • Ryucrono

I just noticed yesterday that i have the same exact problem but im on 4.3.2 Iphone 3gs

  • Gio

Iphone 3 GS 4.3.3 on Fido network, losing many calls at home since December 2010. Worst part is that they are long distance calls from Cuba, so it really does bother me to pay $3 for every call I miss that goes straight to my voicemail because I am the one paying these phone lines.

I will try a Blackberry soon but I read they are having the same issues on the Fido Network.

4.3.3 iPhone 4, factory unlocked (3 phones) with the same problem, but on a Kyrgyzstan carrier. I think it’s a problem with the IOS.

  • MadIPHONE4User

I am on Rogers, and I’m having this same issue.  Ever since the update to 4.3.3, my calls drop after a few minutes, or while Im using the internet on the phone, I get the message “Could not activate cellular network”.  – Brutal.  I am an IT professional, and use my phone and internet feature extensively, this is a big annoyance.  Thanks Apple, maybe more fire power to move back to CrackBerry…  🙁

With Rogers in Ottawa area; changed sim card; changed handset; got a cover; reset network settings; both before 4.3.3 and still with it, all without improvement, same issues as listed here: dropped calls, no 3G signal bars, poor wifi, same cellular data error message pops up; and even pairing issues with Ford Sync system hands free/Bluetooth; none of which occurred with the 3GS phone handset. Dealt with Rogers techs, Apple support, and Apple store, mixed messages from all the above with no real solutions

Still running 4.2.1 as of mid june on my officially unlocked apple store bought iPhone 4 and was also getting this problem on Rogers. Just upgraded to 4.3.3 so well see what happens.

Overall the iPhone 4 sucks dick compared to earlier iPhones I’ve had. Going Android from now on!

I pay for all my services except data… I only use wifi. This started on June 30, 2011 and I am now using my old

i got 3gs on iOS5 Jailbrocken and Unlocked on Older BootRom. Same here, Like when I use EGDE for the Internet through T-Mobile, My signal goes dead then jumps back up to full,  and does that as long as I use Data through different apps or safari, and I also noticed that my Springborad Crashes a lot, if like few text messages come in in same time.

I just Completely removed UltraSn0w and Hard Power Cycled iPhone, and Reinstalled UltraSn0w and Power Cycyled it again, and I ll see if this will fix it.

Because I did read somewhere the if you restore your iPhone through iTunes and the backup was off of Jailbrocken Version of FW, so complications come up like this.

All of my APN: MMS TEXT AND PHONE work Fine, 3G is off Data Roming on and Cellular Data is ON. so lets see now..

    same thing with me too

Just got my new iphone4s replaced on Fido’s instructions. Apple rep said replacing the phone wont make a difference, it is a network issue. He was right, i am still having the same problem. Surprised nobody at fido is acknowledging there is an issue.
