iPhone 3G for Canada! Coming to Rogers & Fido July 11th

Editor’s note: Okay folks so it looks like iPhoneinCanada.ca is temporarily back up in the meantime. The shared server I was on was just crippled with a 2000% CPU overload thanks to the sudden spike in traffice after the iPhone 3G announcement. Things will take a couple days to smooth out, but with that aside let’s get on to today’s amazing news!

Here are the first images of the new iPhone, the “iPhone 3G”…thanks to Gizmodo for the first images…

NEW Features of the Apple iPhone 3G:
-thinner, better battery life: 2G talk time: 10 hours (vs old 5), 5 hours of 3G talk-time, 5-6 hours of 3G browsing, 7 hours of video, 24 hours of audio
-Flush headphone jack; scientific calculator (flips automatically in landscape mode); all metal buttons
-GPS tracking; new USB wall charger
-New iPhone color: WHITE
-Pricing: $199 for 8GB; $299 for 16GB (likely carrier subsidized)

According to my WWDC 2008 predictions, I guessed correctly about 3G, GPS, better speakers/battery, black&white colors, and a change in pricing! I managed to listen to the entire live audio feed today, and it was pure pandemonium at the WWDC when Steve Jobs announced the new iPhone!

When Will the iPhone 3G be Released in Canada?

Mark this date on your calendar folks: July 11th, along with 22 other countries (with 70 countries in total)!

It’s interesting to see on the Apple website that both Rogers and Fido will be carrying the iPhone 3G! So it looks like Rogers will sell a bazillion of these units. A new Rogers press release states I’m predicting a 3 year contract for $199 subsidized iPhone. These new units will sell like hotcakes!

Starting July 11, iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for the 8Gb model and $299 for the 16Gb
model, on a three-year plan. More details on price plans and retail
availability will be available soon.

Here’s a brief statement from Rogers: “Rogers has a long history of bringing Canadians the very best in wireless services, networks and handset innovations,” said Rogers Wireless president Rob Bruce in a statement. “With iPhone 3G, we will provide our customers with an amazing mobile experience over Canada’s fastest wireless network.” (thanks Stevie G!)

The $199/$299 prices are subsidized on 3 year contracts.

The phone WILL NOT be able without a contract unless you have a friend in a Rogers store willing to sell it to you for the full price (not cheap).

@gray, As I have mentioned to many others at this point, I cannot reveal any details regarding the plans yet. However, I will be able to as soon as we get our iphones for training purposes. That will make the reps trained on all the new plans and iphone features, as well as making the plans public.

As I have said to others, Stay Tuned!

(I TOLD you the plans were JUST around the corner) :)

Also, activations are being done in store exclusively.

As a side note, can someone explain to me the decision to make it glossy black? I REALLY liked the aluminum.

Does aluminum cause signal degradation or something?

I think that was at least part of the reason. I have heard complaints that signal strength wasn’t astounding on the iPhone, due to the mostly metal enclosure. With the 3G and GPS in there now, I’m guessing Apple was willing to take a hit looks wise to make sure it worked really well as a phone first. Perhaps partly it was also a price consideration. At the subsidized price [and with revenue sharing now gone], perhaps Apple is taking less of a hit per unit with a plastic enclosure vs a aluminum one.

I guess the only thing I’m a bit disappointed about is the lack of the front facing video camera. Perhaps not something I’d use all the time, but the coolness and “future” factor is undeniable.

@X1: I was thinking about July 11th and the madness that may ensue. Obviously the best thing to do is not be in a major city or mall store, as those are more likely to be crowded, but is it safe to say that all Rogers Wireless stores will have some iPhones in stock at launch? Driving to my parents place last night I was scoping out what I though would be less hectic locations in smaller bergs.

So, smaller amounts at more “rural” Rogers Wireless locals? I guess I’ll just have to be there at 9am.

Any idea when you expect to get your iPhone 3G, X1? Perhaps we can satiate our iPhone lust with some reports from the front. Reception, download/upload speeds, etc..

Actually, almost all stores will have limited stock to begin with.
Plus, many employees will be picking them up for themselves, I hear! lol!

Also, our training units are supposedly coming near the end of June for strictly training purposes but I am unsure of why exactly…its not like people really need any training on this phone!?

Perhaps those further up the chain are still under the crazed impression that people in Canada still don’t know about the iPhone. After it’s already announced, how else can you explain that bizarre monolith-like silhouette image on their splash-page? Sorry guys, cats already outta the bag…

    Just received confirmation.

$199/$299 is FIRM. No negotiations. Which means it will NOT be sold for less than $199/$299

I find it repulsive that EMPLOYEES will be able to buy/hold iPhones for themselves FIRST.

What about the f’n customers? Christ.

Well, I’m hoping if I show up to a smaller shop first thing on the 11th, they’ll have to have at least one or two held back for us poor schmucks the customers. They can’t open first thing in the morning and say they’re already sold out.

    Can they?
