16GB iPhone 3G Units Discontinued at Fido

Are you currently an iPhone 3G user on Fido? If you are, we have some bad news for you. Last November I reported that Fido would stop selling the iPhone 3G in 2009. Well, it looks like there is confirmation that this rumor is now indeed true.

I recently was contacted by an employee from Fido who sent the following news bulletin:

Start Date: March , 2009

End Date:

Regions: National

Reference # F2009-03-27

——————————————————————————–

Availability of the 16 GB iPhone 3G
20-Mar-2009
Please be aware the iPhone 16 GB will be discontinued on the beginning of April
(based on stock availability).
The iPhone 8 GB will remain in the line-up.
Orders can still be placed until a separate Bulletin is published advising that
stocks are depleted and orders will no longer be accepted.

This could mean either one or two things:

1) Fido is going to no longer sell the iPhone 3G
2) Fido is getting rid of iPhone 3G stocks to make room for the next gen iPhone this summer

If you are a Fido user with an iPhone 3G, you are probably wondering what will happen once new iPhone hardware is released. Such questions you might ask are: How will I upgrade to the new iPhone? Will I have to switch to Rogers? Why is Fido doing this to me? Should I cry now like a little baby?

The above has been confirmed by HowardForums user WorldIRC. All I can say is, “adios 16GB iPhone 3G on Fido!”

Rumor: Rogers Will Carry the Next iPhone in August of 2009

I recently was told by a close source to Rogers that the next generation iPhone is imminent and we will see it in August of this year. This source also mentioned that Rogers is in the process of upgrading their networks to 4G and this iPhone will run 4G speeds (to compete with Telus/Bell). I rarely post these type of rumors but this source would not tell me this unless he/she was very confident of the news.

I first mentioned this rumor on Twitter. Shortly after I was contacted by a representative from Rogers via email. Could we be onto something? πŸ˜‰ Also, there has been news on the web about the next iPhone having faster internet speeds.

The pieces are coming together folks. iPhone 4G this summer? Only time will tell! What do you think?

Considering Fido has changed it’s marketing direction lately, could it also mean that a $300 phone doesn’t quite fit into the plan.

How much would it cost for one to switch from fido to rogers? With two years left in the contract… Lol, probably an arm and a leg, i bet???…. See I wouldn’t have even stayed with Fido if I knew they were becoming the “new fido” like they are now, I would have definitely switched to rogers… not to mention all these rumors about them not carrying the new iPhone now… The only reason I stayed with fido was because of the amount of fido dollars I aquired, which I used to the purchase the iPhone 16GB. I don’t know, but I fill as though fido should have said something before this “change” because I bet half the people on fido wouldn’t be there now if they knew it was going to be the “new fido”… And the plans aren’t even that great with the new fido, not for an iPhone anyways… I loathe the “new fido”

Yeah, Fido will stop selling the iphone and only Rogers will carry it… and force you into their more costly plans and per minute billing! … just a prediction.

Rhat ticks me right off that there will be another one so quickly. I’m not upgrading….one could go bankrupt trying to keep up with Apple.

  • I’ve been holding out for a 32GB iPhone. If this “4G” iPhone doesn’t have a memory upgrade, I’m not sure I’ll be buying it. Although, some of the new features in the new OS won’t work on my ‘lil ‘ole 1st gen iPhone…..on second thought, I’ll probably be upgrading, depending on price. πŸ™‚

    hum.. that might explain somethings..

I have been a Fido costumer for about 5 years, I signed a contract about 11 month ago for three years. I called last week about upgrading my phone to an Iphone and add a Data plan. I was suggested nicely to call back in a month or so as I would have had used more than a year of the three years of my aggrement and that I would not have to pay 400 $ to break my contract, but only a 100 $ for a early renewal(or something along those lines…)

I called back today because I had some more question and when I asked, they told me that it would no loger be possible to do that, as of march 18th and that I had to wait to be in my last 14 months to be able to renew a contract in order to get an iPhone. Which means, I have to wait until Feburary 2010…. instead of a month…

    I was some what unhappy….

I suggested to them that I could go and by the phone and else where and get a data plan and that it would be the same.. and the guy pretty much agree that yes it would be….

I also pointed out to them that if i was in that trap it is because I had taken on a 3 year agreement, because until then I had always been happy with their services..Had I taken on a 2 years agreement then i would have had to wait some what less time…6 months less…

anyway defenetly something is up… we shall wait and see…

  • The only way to buy an iPhone from Rogers is to sign a contract. You can try Craigslist to buy a standalone unit, then unlock it using yellowsn0w (as long as you don’t update within iTunes to 2.2.1).

Well read my story with fido. I called two months ago asking for an iphone on a price agreement. I was told that you have to wait 18 months or so to get one, or a month later to get it on a full price with no current agreement change. I just hangup and called again, and a representative answered my call and placed my order without even notice the previous call I have made (because they usually note down calls customer make). After a two days, I called and found that my orders has been turned down and explained that the order was placed by mistake.

I asked them to get something instate, so they offered me to wait one more month and pay for the phone I got with my current contact ($75 for Nokia 2760) plus $250 for the iphone 8GB.

So I called again after a month, and asked for the offer I got previously. The representative who was receiving my call told me that you would need to pay the full price. I respond that I had offered a month ago to pay just 250 plus 75 for the phone I have. She said we will give you a call within next 72 hours.

By the time, I suddenly singed in fido.ca and check my account, and found unbilled amount for $740. I called and surprised that I have a warring put on my account of annoying violence (as the representative stated to me)the customer services’ department. I ignored this warring and asked for why the unbilled amount posted on my account. They told me that the amount is for the iphone with its full price. I respond immediately to cancel this order but no luck.

Any why, I received the phone and willing to send it back on their satisfaction program. I really don’t know whether they will refuse it since I have jailbroken it to try some application I was need or not.

I actually paid the $740 to reinstate my account after it became over the limit of my account, and promised that once the phone returned back, the money will be back on my account, and I’ll be able to ask for a cash refund after the next cycle bill.

    Long story huh!
