Rogers iPhone 3G Data Plan Pricing Revealed on their Website

Okay, I’d like to apologize about the previous $30 unlimited confirmation. Looks like my source will have to “disappear” if you know what I mean. Note to self: never trust anyone, ever again! But let’s get onto the REAL news of today…

Regardless of that, today Rogers announced their iPhone 3G data plans. After getting the info immediately from the iPhoneinCanada.ca community, reading the plans made me think do a double take. Let’s take a look at what Rogers has “to offer” shall we?

$60 Voice/Data Gives you…

150 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends (are you for real?!)
400MB data
75 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text messages (this has always been the case, advertising it makes it seems special)
Unlimited Voicemail (those capped voicemails inboxes are gone forever…)

$75 Voice/Data Gives you…
300 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends
750MB data
100 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text/voicemail

$100 Voice/Data Gives you…
600 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends
1GB data
200 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text/voicemail

$115 Voice/Data Gives you…
800 daytime + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends
2GB data
300 Sent text messages
Unlimited incoming text/voicemail

According to the official Rogers press release…this is what the above data will give you “access” to:

Data Usage – What You Get
————————————————————————-
Monthly
Data Usage   Online Applications
————————————————————————-
400 MB       up to 200,000 text emails or 3,100 web pages or 1,360 photo
attachments
————————————————————————-
750 MB       up to 380,000 text emails or 5,900 web pages or 2,560 photo
attachments
————————————————————————-
1 GB         up to 524,000 text emails or 8,000 web pages or 3,500 photo
attachments
————————————————————————-
2 GB         up to 1,048,000 text emails or 16,000 web pages or 7,000
photo attachments
————————————————————————-

This pricing includes:
– unlimited Wi-Fi access at all Rogers and Fido Hotspots. (wowsers!)

Two voice value packs:
$15/month: Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes
$20/month: Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Text Messages and 6:00 p.m. Early Evening Calling and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes.

Special note: Fido customers with the $20/month plan get 5pm evenings…they are LUCKY!

All I have to say right now is WOW…these plans definitely are not what we expected. No unlimited plan as we had predicted in the past, but these plans are…I hate to say it…a start. The $60 plan starts with 400MB of data. Granted that is 400MB, but can you imagine how fast you would use that up with YouTube?? Sure, the stats say you can visit 3100 webpages, that makes it about 100 webpages/day.

What really gets to me about the starting $60 plan is the 150 daytime minutes. That is not a lot of minutes at all and people will have overages–that’s where Rogers will make its money on you! So many other voice plans out there include more than 150 minutes. This makes me feel like we’re moving backwards here…help me…I’m dizzy!

Caller ID you ask? The only way to get that is to add on one of the “voice value packs”. The cheapest one is $15/month, so you’re already looking at $75/month for using the iPhone 3G. Yikes. Let’s do a quick calculation…

How much is an iPhone 3G going to cost me over my mandatory 3 year contract?

Let’s say you choose the $60 plan as a bare minimum plus the $15/month voice value pack…

$199 iPhone 3G after taxes (in BC at least) = $224.87

$60 voice/data plan + $15 voice value pack + $6.95 SAF = 81.95 + GST/PST = $92.60/month

$92.60 x 36 months (3 year contract) = 3333.60 + $224.87 = $3558.47 over 3 years!

Divide that cost over the span of 3 years to include the iPhone 3G, you’re looking at roughly $99/month to use the iPhone 3G in Canada with Rogers. Are you going to add this new cost to the already increasing cost of living in this country? It really depends on your needs, and if you have the extra cash to spare.

Well done Rogers, well done. Kudos for offering plans with great value to Canadians! Right now Rogers shareholders are probably rejoicing as they will know that Canadians will continue to get gouged for voice/data plans, compared to the rest of the world.

Nice speed on catching this one.

I’ve got a call into Rogers to clarify, but I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to buy Caller ID and other such services a-la carte.

Arrggh! This is horrid. I will not be signing up. I’ll wait for another provider to enter the market down the road (AFAIK – ROgers never said they had exclusivity in Canada) – for now I’ll keep using my original hacked iPhone on a pay as you go plan and use WiFi.

  • Sadly, that’s more or less in line with what I was expecting. It’s in the right direction, but not enough in the right direction. Bear in mind that it used to be $25 for just 4MB.

This is brutal! The data rates seem to be in-line (we were out of our minds to think rogers would offer unlimited data), but what kills me are the voice plans. Like seriously, $75 for 300 minutes? are you kidding? No My5 to add on or anything? (at least thats what I’m assuming) I don’t have a home phone so my minutes are in the 600 minute range and I sure as hell won’t pay $130/mo (for 3 FRIGGEN YEARS!)for an iphone. Better luck next time Rogers.

  • HTC Raphael FTW? 😀

But yeah, the Dog has to put up something cool now, but you know the Dog’s master is a crook so don’t expect too much extra value added goodness. However, at 50%, the plans would sound a bit more livable.

@ed…ummmm…I think you’ll have to get in line with the rest of us, just make sure you bring the vaseline.

The plans suck, unless you are a shareholder. As much as I really want an iPhone, I will not be getting it this time around. I agree with another post I’ve read on iphoneincanada that said they can afford the money for the plans, but there is no value there. I would pay the $ if they included the $15/$20 package and a lot more data (unlimited would be nice).

Good luck Rogers! You could have come out with some spectacular plans and basically monopolized the cell phone market in Canada for the next year or 2. Too bad that greed and stupidity got in the way. What am I saying, I don’t wish you luck. I wish you the same I would any other blood sucking greedy corporation out there.

umm, don’t forget about the 911 Emergency Svc Access fee $0.50/month, and (everybody’s favourite) the System Access fee $6.95/month !

anyhow the plans are still better than the old Rogers plan on my Treo 650 at work:
    $45/month Data Lite & Voice plan – 150minutes + a whopping 3MB(!!) data/month
Luckily(?) the Treo browser sucked big time and data speed so slow, therefore the low data limit ended up being a moot point.

I guess the good thing is maybe the lineups at Rogers stores on July 11th will be shorter…

  • Rogers has blown this. They’ll still make money, but not from me. Awaiting a new GSM provider. I’ll keep my $30 voice only plan, thanks. Data is for rich people. 🙂

I thought that Rogers’ exec interviewed in that business magazine a while back (sorry I don’t have the link!) said their new rates would change the industry, or other such hyperbole? Errr, not so much!

I think I will just get an IPod Touch and use free Wifi hotspots whereever I can and stick with my company issued BB for email and voice call. It’s painful to try surfing on the BB using Rogers’ EDGE.

I only have one this to say. Rogers management should take some Math classes. Cut the plans price in half and you’ll get way more than double the customers = more money for Rogers. Do what they did and they get less money but gets to keep their reputation (if only it would be a reputation worth keeping…).

  • 1. where are rogers and fido wifi hotspots? i’ve never heard of these before.. i’m in toronto.
    2. is caller ID = name display? or is this just the number display? doesn’t number display come standard? i’d like name display for people not in my contact list.
    3. what time do evenings start with rogers?

these plans don’t seem all that fabulous. is there a way to add on just data? i have a decent voice plan already, not good, but better than that 150 daytime minutes BS.

*sigh* F you rogers!!! *shakes fist*

we can vote with our dollars, people!! if you choose NOT to subscribe to these awful rates and just use wifi, rogers may be forced to offer lower prices. remember, this is cutting edge technology in canada, though it’s been in the states for a while, so i’m sure the prices will drop after a while. it’s just been hyped up. i suggest NOT getting these awful plans. i myself won’t be.

on the other hand, if we accept this madness, they’ll realize that their overpriced voice and data plans are actually working and bringing in the cash, so they’ll be less compelled to change them.

    What a surprise… except not.

Oh well, not getting an iPhone now. This is bullshit. I just want an iPhone with a minimal amount of 3G network access – I’d use wifi 99% of the time anyways.

Thing is… Rogers is just screwing the early adopters. They’ll come out with cheaper plans later on – guaranteed. Of course, this doesn’t help for people who don’t feel like waiting around for 6 months. But the reality is, Rogers (and all other cellphone companies) purposely milk the market for as much as is possible. They’ll change the packages in a while so that another big bracket of people will sign on, who were previously saying “no, that’s too expensive for me”. Rogers will just keep shifting things around and making the packages look more “appealing” (By saying bullshit like “unlimited incoming texts” and other redundant crap).

Whatever, though- Rogers can go to hell.

Hey, by the way, notice how Rogers announces these prices through their INVESTOR RELATIONS area? It’s not a marketing thing, it’s not a “trying to impress customers” thing.. It’s all about the investors and making them happy, regardless of how they screw over the customer. What a surprise.

I’ld rather wait for people to sell them on eBay and have a free GPS onwards.

  • This is just crazy, There should be laws against charging this crazy prices, I and my family will stick with my 1st iPhone, I was going to get 5 for us, but now we’ll just keep the old one, and I’ll buy the 3G iPhone on eBay or something, Rogers is not getting any more of my money.

It 2008, and every other company charges a flat fee for internet connection, why can’t Rogers do that for the iPhone?
I just wish someday soon, some other company will come up here with reasonable data/voice plans. coz I’m sick of Rogers. but for now, I’ll just keep my old iPhone.

How is getting iPhone on ebay going to save you any money?

With the contract you are getting the iPhone for $200. On ebay it’ll cost more than $400. Sure you’re not signing up to a contract when you purchase it on ebay, but you’ll still need to add all the features to your plan anyway.

Pretty expensive plans… cheaper plan will get Rogers more customers, which will make Rogers happier, Apple happier and Customers happier… why Rogers is still screwing everything up…

Now make that the $100 plan/ see amount below $60 plan

Let’s say you choose the $60 plan as a bare minimum plus the $15/month voice value pack…

$199 iPhone 3G after taxes (in BC at least) = $224.87

    $60 voice/data plan + $15 voice value pack + $6.95 SAF = 81.95 + GST/PST = $92.60/month

    $92.60 x 36 months (3 year contract) = 3333.60 + $224.87 = $3558.47 over 3 years
    —————
    $100 plan

    $40 difference(frm $60) x 36 months+$1440 + GST 187.20=$1627.20
    $3558.47 + $1627.20=$5185.67 over 3 years on the $100 plan

Now that’s crazy.. What are the buy out terms???

For business use, when you compare the average “CrackBerry” bill of around $199, this is not such a bad deal. I’ll be starting on the $75 plan and go from there. Add on the $20 value pack and it’s still a much better deal (for business) than other mobile devices.

Now, for personal use, I completely agree… the rates are ridiculous! Rogers is going to tick off a lot of people who want this device for personal use. Makes me think they are strictly going after businesses.

I would expect the stakeholders to be groaning in pain! Why would you create barriers and DISCOURAGE people from signing up with your service!? There was an amazing opportunity here for them to snag THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of new people, yet they put forward the most prohibitive offer to date! They could be rolling in cash, but instead they dangle an offer no one will be interested in. 3 year contract? Get Bent!

I figure they did this to protect Blackberry since it’s a Canadian company. Why else would they discourage people from getting an iPhone?

Good luck to everyone trying to buy a 3G iPhone on EBay. The new iPhone is offered in the US only with a contract. That means that anyone who buys one in the US also has to purchase a three-year contract to go with it. Do you think they’re going to be selling those handsets cheap? Probably not.

These prices might be high for consumers, but I’m already paying $120/month for my Treo with Bell, and that’s for only 30MB of data. I’d kill to be able to get 100Gig for those prices. Personally, I think these plans are CHEAP compared to what we’ve had in Canada so far. Sure they’re not as cheap as the US, but they’re a huge step closer than we’ve ever been.

well i wont be upgrading my phone any time soon. and if these plans don’t change I’ll be switching to another service provider at the end of my term. there is no way I’m going to spend $90 a month for the basic plan plus the “value” pack, when i get 200 mins plus free rogers to rogers and unlimited incoming with 125 text messages, voicemail and call display for only $55(with tax). having 400mb of data is not worth it, after all, the iphone is still a phone, people TALK on phones, and 2 1/2 hours of daytime talk time a month is a joke.

Is it possible to switch plans after you’ve bought an iphone? rogers say on their website that :

“Rogers customers can change plans any time they want
    * That’s right. No questions, no hassles and no cost for switiching. It’s that easy.”

are they choosing to ignore this policy when it comes to the iphone?

Here here to Mil. Right now I pay $15/month to Telus for unlimited internet browsing. Its absolutely ridiculous that we are the only country that still can’t offer a decent unlimited plan. They’re all a bunch of greedy pricks.

Wait so what do they mean by FREE Wi-Fi browsing at ROGERS/FIDO Hotspots? First of all, I work for and authorized Rogers Wireless dealer, and there are no such things as ROGERS/FIDO hotspots that I know of, and secondly… Does that mean we HAVE to use ROGERS/FIDO hotspots? Does that mean they’ll charge us for using our own wi-fi networks?

  • Alex… yeah i know what you mean… On the Rogers site they show their “Hotspot” logo, but i’ve only ever seen that logo at Bell Hotspot locations.
As for using your own wi-fi network.. i would think yes they will charge you for that as well, probably even if you subscribe to internet through rogers… they will just ding you twice.

there is an online petition at ruinediphone.com so far about 20,000 people have signed it.

Rediculous…I have been anticipating buying my iPhone on July 11th for about 3 months now…since I lost my last phone and started using a 7 year old Nokia.

    But wtf…over 100 a month for 400mb?

that takes it from sitting on my couch playing on my iPhone…to going to my computer desk…charging my iPhone and playing on my PC. Which is stupid because whats the point of having one anymore?

…add onto it that the iPhone is still a Phone and 150 daytime minutes??? honesltY? What kind of company doesnt offer an unlimited offer….my 1st celphone came with unlimited daytime and that was like 8 years ago or more…..i will be canceling my family plan as soon as I can, I’ve had enough of Rogers.
