Apple to Start iPhone 5S Trial Production in December Says Report

According to Digitimes, Apple is said to start trial production of the next iPhone 5S as early as December, based on a report from Taiwanese financial newspaper the Commercial Times. The latter reports the next iteration of the iPhone will have production volumes of 50,000-100,000 units.

Facing low yield rates in the production of iPhone 5, Apple has accelerated the certification processes for related parts and components for the iPhone 5S, the paper revealed.

The report also notes volume production will probably start in 2013 Q1, and also speculates a new iPad mini will be ripe for another release in Q2 next year since the smaller tablet debuted with a non-Retina display.

The iPhone 5 launched in September, less than a year after the iPhone 4S, which was made available in October of 2011. Below are the U.S. launch dates for the iPhone so far:

Original: June 29, 2007
iPhone 3G: July 11, 2008
iPhone 3GS: June 19, 2009
iPhone 4: June 24, 2010
iPhone 4S: October 14, 2011
iPhone 5: September 21, 2012
iPhone 5S: ?

Are we ready to upgrade already to the iPhone 5S?

The iPhone 5 to me was a disappointment! They really need to do something special with the next phone because I really feel like I have a 4s with a bigger screen. Had I researched more before getting the 5 I probably would have got a 4s instead

Will buy for sure… Wait, what are next feature? New connector again?

  • poor battery life on the iPhone 5, it was my first and last iPhone.

There is this possibility that Apple may break the trend and produce a totally redesigned iPhone and iOS instead of producing a 5S. I have two reasons for my statement: first, the low yield rate and difficult manufacturing process for this iPhone. It’s so hard to make, that even Foxconn makes itself look bad by admitting it, has its manufacturing and QA employees fight over it and has issues with suppliers sending enough bug free working parts. Most iPhone 5’s do have a screen issue that if proven hardware based, it’s going to generate a huge recall. Now, if Apple design team can shorten the time iPhone 5 is in circulation, by producing an easier to make, say, iPhone 6, they will save another year of pain for themselves and release the new and easier to manufacture design. Second, with Scott Forstall gone and Jonny Ive taking care of the whole design, it’s possible that iPhone gets the biggest hardware and software update since the first iPhone(Take into consideration the difficulty of iPhone 5 manufacturing into account too). I can hardly wait for the rumors. It’s also interesting to see if Apple is going to make some new rules to extend its security and secrecy to the Chinese manufacturers who leaked the heck out of iPhone 5 and iPad mini, and how. It’s going to be a fun year!!!

The Speed DIfference between the 5 and 4S is amazing, not to mention how much lighter the phone is. The slightly larger screen is another plus on certain apps.

Stop biting into the news, if you think they 5 is similar to the 4S then you shouldnt own an iPhone.

Derek, try restoring our Iphone 5 with iTunes and if that doesn’t work, make an appointment and have your phone replaced at an Apple store. I’m getting a phenomenal battery charge out of mine. Before, when I got home every night, my IPhone 4S would have 15%-30% charge left as I’m a heavy user. With my iPhone 5, I’m getting 35%-45% charge left, with everything on! And I’m really using it: phone, text, email, Internet, invoicing and accounting software, research and browsing, ebooks and… I’m sure your iPhone has a problem.

  • Hal

Who cares about the shape of the iPhone…that can only be manipulated so much…frankly who cares…to me a major software update that blows are minds is more important then the shell of the phone

  • anon

LOL! That’s not going to happen, but you can dream. Everyone always predicts a radical design change, with each generation, and it NEVER happens. The 5S will have the same shell as 5, just with the A7 processor, better cameras, more ram as usual upgrade.

  • anon

Yup. Currently, the iPhone 4S on a JB 5.1.1 > iPhone 5 on factory 6.01.

  • anon

There is something wrong with your 4S. I’m getting 50% charge left on my 4S at the end of the day, and I’m even a more hardcore user than you. I’m constantly playing graphics intensive FPS games, which is is the most demanding on battery life.

  • Keneo

You are 100% right. Apple loves their margins. That’s why they will spread the cost of redesigning the form factor over at least two years. As they did with the 3G to 3GS and 4 to 4S.

  • Farids

Oh wow. Thanks for that bit of info, I guess, as I don’t own a 4S anymore. My post was to let Derek know he has options. He mentioned it would be his last Iphone. I wanted to let him know he can have his phone replaced. I was trying to be helpful, not compete in iPhone battery longevity contest. Thanks though.

  • K3

Gary, any word on when the iphone 5 refurbs might be offered up from Apple? There has to be a large number coming through.

  • Farids

Not dreaming. I’ve never made such prediction. I, in the past consulted Apple in internal product research, have written independent product opinion (if you work for or with Apple, you know what that means) and am well aware of their policies and direction. This was not a prediction. This was stating a possibility, based on my knowledge of Apple’s workings, recent changes in management team, being somewhat familiar with Apple’s design team and recent issues they’re having( maybe a little more than an average reader). Stating my opinion OF A POSSIBILITY and the reasons for that opinion. I may very well be wrong, but have been right, sometimes, in the past.

  • Faridsdontknowsquat

    Farids knows all

  • iPhoneCanada

Well seeing as how the ios design chief was just fired and jony ive has now JUST gotten on board AND the iPhone does not release until the next ios version is available I would say it’s a safe bet that the next iPhone will not be released till at LEAST next summer…

  • Dawn

Farids sure doesn’t like anyone who posts against his grande tech knowledge lmao

  • We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

    Gary Ng

  • Farids

Not really. I guess I’m a little picky and cranky when it comes to choice of words people use. I apologize, if I upset anyone.

  • Farids

Thanks. Was very nice of you. I read your reply with your strong logic. I totally agree with you.

  • Farids

I agree. It’s a very strong possibility. Software and hardware both need improvements and that takes time.

  • Yea, My Iphone 4s feels like 3gs with a better screen. Had i researched more before getting the 4s I probably would have got a 3gs instead. Not.

  • B

My iPhone 5, which I waited 2 years, is not only imperfect, but obsolete in a couple of months….
