Apple May Have Purchased iCloud.com

With ongoing reports of Apple launching a cloud music service and only cloud storage, the latest rumours point to Apple acquiring the domain iCloud.com from Sweden-based company Xcerion, according to GigaOM:

My source, who is familiar with the company, says that Xcerion has sold the domain to Apple for about $4.5 million. Xcerion hasn’t responded to my queries as yet. At the time of writing, the Whois database showed Xcerion as the owner of iCloud.

The interesting part is Xcerion has rebranded to CloudMe.com. Could their rebranding have been the result of the sale of their domain to Apple? Here’s what currently shows up when a WHOIS query is made for iCloud.com:

Could iCloud.com be the evolution of MobileMe (rumours are it is going free), or a new add on for existing users? The domain could just be a number of various names Apple might be using for its upcoming cloud service (and with almost $65 billion in cash, purchasing high profile domains are not a problem!). Apple’s $1 billion dollar North Carolina data centre was recently visited by a local Fox News affiliate, and will be the epicentre for anything related to the cloud.
