Rogers iPhone 3G Data Rates: Cheaper Than Expected?

*Edit: Sorry guys, I just got home from work and it should be $30 for 300MB, not 30MB. My apologies for the the typo!!!**

Many people out there want to find out some real important info from Rogers and Fido prior to signing their lives away to a 3 year contract for the upcoming iPhone 3G: What will wireless data rates be like?

Well according to a few news reports, Rogers Chief Operating Officer, Nadir Mohamed told Bloomberg that Rogers plans on switching to pricing that “drives adoption” and we will soon see “more value” in data plans. This all took place in Toronto at a news conference, where Rogers announced a 47 percent increase in Q1 wireless data sales–a hint that Canadians love their data, even if they’re being gouged for it.

Yesterday, Nadir also stated, “web browsing is real…it’s happening on mobile broadband and our pricing will change to reflect that … You will see more value in our pricing as we go forward.” So that confirms folks that Rogers plans on revealing some REAL data plans to Canadians that will make sense with the new iPhone 3G launch.

What about when it comes to Rogers and their high data rates? Mohamed’s answer was that their current rates were designed for an era of cellphones that focused on voice conversations and text messages, and that it was unfair to criticize Rogers for that. “Every time we’ve had a change, we’ve had pricing to reflect that change.”

So maybe we will give Rogers the benefit of the doubt, and we can assume that new rates will reflect a fair price for wireless usage–(insert loud, incredibly nasally Borat voice) NOT! Who are we kidding, we’ve seen extremely high rates over the years in terms of both voice and data–why would they want to change their model now?

Wireless subscribers have gone down for Rogers and they will most likely try to counter that loss through mass usage of wireless data. If rates are reasonable as stated, I can see how many people would jump on and surf away. Sure, let’s say we get a decent data plan. If it’s a capped plan, and the penalties for exceeding megabytes is quite severe, that’s another area where Rogers can reap in the profits. Does $0.05/kb ring a bell to anyone here?

However, if Canadians continue to receive Rogers branded handsets that are crippled (HTC Touches with WiFi disabled comes to mind) by Rogers so users are forced to pay for data, I can see revolts happening in the streets. I’m talking people walking around with 2×4′s stuck with rusty nails on the end. Let’s hope wireless spectrum bidding will actually create some new mobile competition in this country.

Until these new data plans are released, there’s no point in speculating about all the different pricing schemes we’re hearing about on the internet. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. These prices were “confirmed” by a Rogers rep, and relayed to me via Twitter (thanks minell!):

$30 for 300MB
$60 for 1GB
$100 for 6GB

See what I mean? I bet somewhere out there some Rogers employees are having so much fun spreading “news” to everyone about pricing. But until we see something official released, don’t believe everything you hear. But then again, if it’s on the internet, it must be true! ;)

What do you guys predict will arise out of these “new rates” coming our way? Are you excited yet?

Exactly. Everywhere else in the world has a reasonable data plan. I remember reading a study that says of all first world countries in the world, Canada has the highest mobile phone rates, the highest mobile data rates and the worst possible plans.

…and this was when they still had City Fido!

Or you can get ziphone, change your IMEI to the IMEI of a regular 3G cell phone and add the unlimited mobile browsing plan and access the internet all you want unlimited…. I do about 10-20mb/month for 7$ right now and thats just through a shitty mobile browser.

As far as the Rogers data plans go… I don’t know the prices but within the vision pricing there will for sure be a 50mb, 200mb, and 500mb plan. not sure if this qualifies for the iphone yet though…

new plans JUST (literally 3 mins ago) posted on Rogers… not confirmed as iphone plans but it’s a logical assumption that iphone falls within these plans…

    $30 – 300mb
    $60 – 1gb
    $80 – 3gb
    $100 – 6gb

Flex Rate plan starts at $50 for 500mb goes to 100$ for 5gb.. Can now be added to a cell phone (not aircard only anymore)….

here is the actual post… sorry the tables don’t show up properly when posted through here…

“DATA PRICES FOR THE NEW GROWING NEED FOR BROWSING AND THE NEW HSPA DEVICES WE HAVE BEEN GETTING AND THE NEW HSPA NETWORK THAT WE HAVE BEEN ROLLING OUT!
Since the beginning of this year, we have been getting larger coverage of HSPA across the country. While we started with just one HSPA air card and only two HSPA phones, we are now covering more areas and getting way more air cards and devices that can handle HSPA speeds. So the need to surf the internet is now becoming a reality for consumers. While browsing the internet has been a smaller part of the mobile data business to date, we now need pricing that will meet what we expect to be a rapidly accelerating use of our new devices and network speeds.

So Rogers now offers a selection of great new data options to meet the needs of all customers – not just business customers. These new options are designed to give customers the ultimate flexibility and cost certainty regardless of how they access their email, web browser, and other data applications while on the go. These options are ideally suited for HSPA devices on Canada ’s fastest wireless network. They have been built in anticipation of the network update that is in progress now, which will double the speed of our network.

    Highlights of new Data Pricing

    1. Attractive options for all types of users including consumer and business

    2. Simplified pricing that works for all devices — it’s “device agnostic”

    3. Worry Free Data with exclusive Overage Protection features such as Flex Rate and overage caps

Q: How does the Flex Rate plan work?
A: Charlie buys a BlackBerry Curve and subscribes to the BlackBerry Flex Rate Plan. In the first month, Charlie uses 1.2 GB of data therefore falling within Tier 3, making his Monthly Service Fee for the first month $75. In month 2, the Flex Rate Plan resets and Charlie starts at the $50 base MSF level. Charlie only uses 373 MB of data in month 2 so his Monthly Service Fee is only $50. The plan adjusts with Charlie’s usage needs, allowing him to pay the best possible rate each month.

    Existing Data Plans

    Existing BlackBerry Internet Service plans ($15 / 1.5MB, $15 / Personal E-mail on BlackBerry, $25 / 4 MB), and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Plans ($40 / 7MB, $60 / 25 MB and $100 / 1GB plans) will remain in market
Existing $15 / 2MB and $25 / 4 MB Data Service plans will remain in market
    Existing $40 / 8MB, $60 / 30 MB, $80 / 500 MB and $100 / 1GB Data Service Plans will be expired
The existing Data Access Plan Rate Card will remain unchanged
Previously named “Windows Mobile” Category will now be referred to as “Data Service Plans”
    Important Information:

All new BlackBerry plans are Business Internet Service ( BIS ) Only
The new $60, $80 and $100 BlackBerry Internet Service Plans are discountable per BPR structure
Data Service Plans are not discountable

It’s not true.. at least according to the rogers data rep i just spoke with.
My unlimited data promo thing (htc tytn phone) ends tomorrow so I called to get in on this new plan.
She said nope, no new plans yet. they have them ready to go, but they need to re-figure something out, (she didn’t go into detail here). but we did talk about the plans listed above.
She said those will probly get better when they are fully released on July 11.
However she did extend my unlimited data bonus promo till the iphone is out.

    so we sit and wait.

Actually, it is true. Those plans take affect today that would be why she told you they didn’t exist yesterday. You shouldn’t comment on things when you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. You can call and talk to all the Rogers reps that you want and you still wouldn’t have a clue. For one, the customer service Reps are very poorly trained and their mostly idiots. For two, you can easily misunderstand someone over the phone.

I’m at work right now… give me your cell number and postal code and I’ll gladly add any of those plans to your account for you!

I’ll even put it on a 3 year term for you. Don’t try to discredit me when you have no idea what you’re talking about… Those are the new data plans whether you like it or not. I never said they are for sure the iphone plans, but they are definately 100% the new Rogers data plans and they are available right now!

Thomas I don’t think anybody is discrediting you but facts are facts and all your info you posted is strictly heresay. You need to back everything up with legitimate proof.

You may feel the info you posted is correct for whatever reason but the rest of us would look like knobs if we took your word for it – even if we believe you work at rogers. And to that point if you did your job would be in jeopardy for acting on promises like the one you just posted to mopie above.

My friend – the proof is in the pudding not the bowl.

I agree with some of the other posts. Anything short of unlimited data for $60 will be very disappointing and upsetting.

In fact there should be a class action law suit filed for the severe price gouging we’ve had to endure relative to the US.

We certainly need more competition up here, we should open our markets to the US telecoms to put the Canadian companies back in their place. Shame on you Ted.

Why would my job be in Jeopardy. If he gives me his phone number and postal code and gives me permission to make changes to his account, than that would be doing exactly what my job description entails… and I don’t see why I would ever be fired for that!

Also, I gave you legitimate proof. I posted a bulletin from the Rogers sales site and I offered to make the changes to his account for him. I don’t think you can get any more legitimate than actually putting the plan on his account for him.

Anyone that wants any of those plans added to their account just ask. They are the Rogers plans and if you really don’t believe me, let me add it for you. Or call the call center back and talk to the lovely lady who told you they didn’t exist and I’m sure she’ll add it for you, because they do!

I forgot to add that I did not post ANYTHING that was heresay. I don’t post heresay. What’s the point in posting something that is likely not true. All I posted was straight facts. So please don’t post saying I posted heresay when you don’t know. For one it makes me look bad (but only until people realize I’m right!) and for two it makes you look bad when you realize I’m right!

Sorry, I didn’t mean to get your feathers all in a bunch. All I was saying that I spoke with a Rogers Rep and surfed the Rogers site, both came up goose eggs.

You said “new plans JUST (literally 3 mins ago) posted on Rogers…” but didn’t post a link.
The internet is full of lies, but 1) no link was posted to go along with claim and 2) I spoke with a rogers rep.
Yes I realized often the Reps are mis/un/not informed but thats All I have. The internet is full of many many claims of plans and rates. So with the tools I have at hand, I did what I could and came up empty.

    No disrespect meant.
