Rogers/Fido Announce iPhone 4 Activation/Upgrade Pricing, 6GB Data Plan Returns

Today is a great today for Canadians as the pricing for the contract and outright iPhone 4 has finally been confirmed!

In the USA, France, Germany, Japan, and United Kingdom, iPhone 4 pre-orders went live on June 15, 2010 for a launch date of June 24, 2010. At the time, it was confusing to why Canada was left out of that country list.

Now, one month later on July 30 2010, it is Canada’s launch day.

iPhone 4 Purchasing Methods

Canadians will have three methods to get their iPhone 4:

1.) Canadians will be able to order the unlocked, full price iPhone 4 16/32GB in Black through the Apple Canada Online Store starting Friday July 30. Any online orders are shipped to the billing address (no store pickup).

2.) As an alternative for the unlocked iPhone 4, customers can also visit their local Apple Store to purchase an outright, unlocked iPhone 4 starting Friday July 30. There will be line-ups this weekend.

3.) For customers that want iPhone 4 locked on contracts with activations or upgrades (usually with promotional pricing), visit your local Apple Store or Canadian wireless dealer (Rogers, Bell, Virgin, Fido, Telus) store starting Friday July 30. There will be line-ups this weekend.

To summarize, if you want your iPhone 4 IMMEDIATELY, do either method 2 or method 3 above.

Please note that the iPhone 4 is limited to two per customer.

Canadian iPhone 4 Pricing

Canadian pricing for the iPhone 4 is as follows when purchased at an Apple Store (or on contract from a Canadian wireless dealer):

iPhone 4 (Black Only; White Delayed Until Further Notice)

  • 16GB: $159 locked on contract; $649 unlocked without contract
  • 32GB: $269 locked on contract; $749 unlocked without contract

Note: Any iPhone 4 purchased at a Canadian wireless carrier store will be locked to that carrier no matter the price paid. However, if purchased at full price from an Apple Store, the iPhone 4 will be unlocked. If purchased on contract from an Apple Store, the iPhone 4 will be locked to a Canadian wireless carrier.

The iPhone 3GS is also available at a new price:

iPhone 3GS (Black)

  • 8GB: $99 locked on contract; $549 unlocked without contract

Note: The iPhone 3GS purchased at a Canadian wireless carrier store will be locked to that carrier no matter the price paid. However, if purchased at full price from an Apple Store, the iPhone 3GS will be unlocked. If purchased on contract from an Apple Store, the iPhone 4 will be locked to a Canadian wireless carrier.

Rogers Activation & Upgrade Pricing

If you activated or upgraded your Rogers iPhone on a contract between January 1, 2009 and June 7, 2010:

  • You are eligible for at least $250 off the no-term device price. That puts the iPhone 4 16GB for $399 and iPhone 4 32GB for $499 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.

If you activated or upgraded your Rogers iPhone on a contract before December 31, 2008:

  • You are eligible for $490 off the no-term device price for the iPhone 4 16GB and $480 off the no-term device price for the iPhone 4 32GB (promotional pricing). That puts the iPhone 4 16GB for $159 and iPhone 4 32GB for $269 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.

If you activated or upgraded your Rogers iPhone 3G in 2008 and then upgrade again between June 19, 2009 and September 15, 2009:

  • You are eligible for $490 off the no-term device price for the iPhone 4 16GB and $480 off the no-term device price for the iPhone 4 32GB (promotional pricing). That puts the iPhone 4 16GB for $159 and iPhone 4 32GB for $269 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.

Fido Activation & Upgrade Pricing

Fido also has an iPhone 4 promotion.

For customers who entered into a Fido agreement on or before December 31st, 2008, are eligible for the same agreement pricing as new customers when they renew their voice and data agreement. In other words, $159 for 16GB and $269 for 32GB.

Customers who do not qualify for the above offer are eligible for a $250 credit off the no-term price when they reset their voice and data term to a 3-year agreement.

Based on discounts, iPhone 4 will cost:

  • 16GB iPhone 4: $399 ($250 off) or $159 ($490 off)
  • 32GB iPhone 4: $499 ($250 off) or $269 ($480 off)

In addition, customers may contribute all accumulated FidoDollars towards their upgrade, which can be used at a Fido store or Apple Store.

Rogers/Fido $30 6GB Data Plan Returns

Effective July 30 2010, smartphone customers who activate on a three-year voice and data contract can choose the Rogers/Fido 6GB data plan for $30.

Normally, Rogers/Fido charge $30 for 1GB of data.

This data plan can be added to any in-market voice plan before September 30, 2010. At this time, it seems that September 30, 2010 is the expiry date for this offer. If you are a new customer or existing, you are eligible for the $30 6GB data plan and once you add the plan, the plan is permanent unless you take it off (like any other data plan).

iPhone 4 MicroSIM Card

For the MicroSIM card, if the iPhone 4 is purchased at a Canadian wireless carrier store or Apple Store, the customer will receive one MicroSIM card for use with a Canadian wireless carrier at no charge.

Additional MicroSIM cards will be charged accordingly.

Have to laugh… Called Rogers this morning… I am waiting for my iphone 4.. no rush will get it when there are no lines and there is stock. I was pissed at the Data plan sharing price for iphone/ipad . So I called. Told them that after 25 years or so of being a customer they can do better than the $20/month extra charge to add my iPad.

She looks at my account and said wow… your already getting great deals! I can't even get these prices. I laughed. So she said hang on I am transferring you to our special department that handles this situation.

So I get transferred. Get a super nice representative. She looks at my account. I told her politely, calm and nice that all I want is the same plan as bell. She said fine not a problem.

So.. Yes I am getting the 6G $30/month plan shared with the ipad for $20.00 – $10.00 Data Discount for a whopping $40.00/month for both. Now I am Happy!

As for not having the 4G on the first day.. I can wait…a couple of days or weeks… no big deal for my upgrade.

Thank you Rogers…. no one can match what your giving me! :)

  • Woody666

I just called Rogers about the 6GB data plan for $30 and they said they haven't hear of anything yet.

Can only the primary person of the family-plan account (aka my dad) do a hardware upgrade? My dad is away on a business trip until mid-August and I need the new iPhone now because my 3G is freezing with incoming calls (only Apple can pull off loyalty like this haha).

My mom is also registered in our family plan, and can she sign the contract instead of my father to do the hardware upgrade. There must be at least one more person in this predicament.

Oh god, do I wish I want to be an adult right now haha. Shame my 16 years young age.

  • William

Well, there must be a way you can get the $249 you just lost back…

  • MR

Does anyone know if the 6GB/$30 data plan can be integrated into Rogers' voice+data “personal plans”? In other words, can I do the $50/month plan (200 mins + 500MB) and then pay the $5-10 difference to upgrade to 6GB? Or would I have to buy a voice plan completely separately? If so, that's $30 + $30 (their lowest-priced voice plan).

Of course, if I wanted to add call display and voicemail, that's another $15, so we're at $75 before however many miscellaneous fees Rogers adds, plus tax… am I adding this up properly? So with the 6GB/$30 data option with call display and voicemail, I'd be looking at a monthly bill of $90-100?

  • Silentbomb

I just got off the phone with Rogers and they told me i was not eligible for an upgrade, yet still the site tells me i am eligible for 159/16 and 269/32.

Anyone else get a false eligiblity outcome??

  • Stephenh

LOL.. call back and speak to someone else!

  •  Xaroc

Hmm I got a thumbs up from online and call in

  • Silentbomb

I told them that their site shows me i am eligible and she said well your not and look at the Legal Disclaimer which says

“Pricing and offers are subject to change without notice. Offers valid until stated expiry date or while quantities last, with new three-year term voice and data plan. “

Also just check again and keep getting this….

You are eligible to upgrade to an iPhone 4 at $159 for the 16GB or $269 for 32GB, each with a 3 year term voice and data plan. See Legal Disclaimer below or in-store for full details and conditions.

Not sure what i can do about this or what to tell them.

  • Oscaront

bestbuy's system is not working properly , it says that i cannot upgrade my iphone to an iphone4 and when i called rogers they always tell me the opposite that i am eligible to upgrade it. at the end bestbuy's guy could not sell me the phone…i dont know if there is a problem of connection between rogers and bestbuy… any similar story?

  • Alama

Are they sold out in all Rogers locations? How about Future Shop? Is it possible to buy this thing anywhere in Toronto? :)

  • Kamran

what does the minimum cost of the plan have to be to get the subsidized price?

  • Paul

I got my iphone 3G on the first day 2 years ago and Fido did not force me to take out a data plan and I was paid the promotion price of $199 and kept my city-fido plan. Now Fido said that I can have the i[phone 4G 16 GB for $159 with the new 3 years contract with my existing city-fido plus additional DATA ADDON plan. Alternatively I can have the iphone 4g 16GB for $359 with NO DATA ADDON and keep my existing city-fido plan. My existing city-fido is unlimited calling which I subscribed from very long time ago with fido.

  • Ema

Currently at a Rogers store and they are not allowing upgrades for people who upgraded to 3GS (the people eligible for $399 upgrade cost)!

So heartbreaking, anyone know what's up with that?

  • wongnog

Just upgraded my 3GS plan to the 6GB data plan. I previously had the $40 iPhone value pack, which included visual VM, unlimited SMS/MMS, and 500MB data. They split that up to the $20 Visual VM pack (includes unlim SMS/MMS) + the new $30 6GB data plan. So for an extra $10 a month I increased my data plan from 500Mb to 6Gb. I couldn't be happier, with MyWi I can tether to my wi-fi only iPad for free!

  • Vic_67

I called in and did the exact same thing the Rogers rep was very nice upgraded my 3GS plan to the 6GB data plan. I previously had the $35 iPhone value pack, which included visual VM, unlimited SMS/MMS, and 500MB data. They split that up to the $20 Visual VM pack (includes unlim SMS/MMS) + the new $30 6GB data plan. The rep also gave me free local calling for 6 months and tried to give me 6pm calling but it wasn't available anymore and he gave me 1 yr free System Access Fee $6.95/month so Im very pleased I saved 15.00 dollars off the actual price of the 30.00 data upgrade sometimes you just have to be nice or get a great rep but also they got a 1 yr extension of my contract but im still happy

  • abc

I'm completely confused. I got the original iphone two years ago, the week it came out. I upgraded to the 3Gs the day it came out, a year later. From reading the above I thought that made me eligible for the 32GB iPhone 4 at $269 but Rogers is telling me that I have to pay $499. Has anyone else with a similar history gotten the phone for $269? How did you do it?

  • Carbo

Picked up my Iphone 4 this afternoon. I was expecting to get the $159 Rogers HUP deal (as previously confirmed on the phone with a Rogers rep and online via the Eligibility button) but when I purchased at the Apple Store, I was being told I had to pay $399. Turns out that although I picked up my original 3G in July 2008, since I did a hardware swap in March 2009 (swapped my 3G under warranty due to tech problems), this counted as an upgrade. They lowered the price back down to $159 when I agreed to sign up for the 6GB/$30 contract. Wasn't planning on getting a data package but oh well…guess I can tether now.

  • Gerard

I finally were able to get a good deal from Rogers… My 3 years term will be over by January 2011. So after trying and trying and trying with 5 different representatives, the 6th one was my lucky one.
So we agreed on the following. I will upgrade to iPhone4… get 200 minutes… free after 6 and week-ends… 2500 txt… Unlimited incoming… Unlimited rogers to rogers… Voice mail/caller id and THE 6GB plan… all that for $63.84 tax included.
Too bad non of the Rogers stores here in Halifax had any left in their stock… I will have to wait till next week I guess.

  • Jay

I just logged in to my Fido account. I had one year left on my contract and now it has added 4 years on top of that. They never told me that in the Apple store yesterday. F(*&&(* 4 years seems an eternity.

  • Larry

I just called Fido and they said my contract (2 years remaining) would not be extended in any way since it is only a hardware upgrade. Huh? I emailed them again just in case.

  • Carbo

Just following up…Woke up this morning and decided to cancel the 6GB data plan. Rogers said that they would cancel but would charge me an extra $100 to cover the subsidized cost of the Iphone…I agreed. So all in all, I was told I would be able to upgrade for $159; then I was told I was not eligible and had to pay $399 or reduce it to $159 with the extra data package; now I cancelled the data and have to pay an extra $100 on my $159 phone. $259 is better than $399!

I don't see the $30 6GB plan in fido. Does fido really offers that plan?

Fido Sucks. A month ago I got a fido number with no contract and they told me that as soon as the iPhone 4 came out I could get the phone by getting into a 3 year contract and I would be treated as a new customer, I call today and now they are saying I have to wait 3 months to get the phone for $159…I am on a month to month so I am cancelling and getting a new phone from Bell for $159 as soon as they are available. they only want to sell the phone to new clients at the begining… I should be consider new since I don't have a contract… what a stupid thing to do FIDO. Not the right way to talk to someone that is not in a contract “If you want the phone soonner than 3 months pay full price” Wow…Great customer service ha!!!!!! I'm sure I'll be treated better somewhere else.

Rogers customer service is giving people the wrong information, they told me the same and I ended up having to pay more and waiting for stock to come in or calling places to find out where I can get it. Call customer service and make sure they give you the CORRECT information.

I have an iPhone with Fido since July 2008, and there are 12 months remaining on my contract. I called Fido to ask if I'm eligible to get a new iPhone 4 and they said yes. However, they said the new 3-year contract would be added to the remaining 12 months. I thought the account would be reset when I sign the new contract with 3 years instead of 4… Could anyone comment this?

  • http://twitter.com/Xaroc  Xaroc

I don't think it's “added” I'm very sure he means it will be reset to 3 years

  • Hugh Lindley

Rogers seems to be taking their own sweet time in terms of getting these units out to its customers. Availability in Ottawa for the iphone 4 is near nihl (as of Sept. 9th, 2010).

  • Venturia

This posts mentions the data plan is valid on Fido for existing iphone contracts. However, the promotion is not listed on the Fido website. How can I take advantage of it?

“This data plan can be added to any in-market voice plan before September 30, 2010. At this time, it seems that September 30, 2010 is the expiry date for this offer. Can anybody clear up the confusion over unlocked iPhone 4′s please? What happens if you buy from an Apple store and use an existing SIM? Does it still lock to a network – or can you switch SIMS [between a UK and Canadian SIM, for example].

Appreciate any help on this one.

  • JU
