Rogers & Fido Extend Tethering Promo Till May 3rd, 2010

Rogers noted the other day, that the Rogers and Fido tethering promo announced last summer will been extended. The original expiry date was set for December 31st, so that’s a pretty darn good extension for the promotion. There is no official press documents on the Rogers website as of yet, but details are as follows:

“The current promotion, originally set to expire December 31, provides tethering at no extra charge to those with a data plan/add-on of 1 GB or more with a compatible device. Data charges for tethering are deducted from the customer’s current data plan bucket. This promotion has been extended for all existing customers until May 3, 2010. Customers who are currently eligible to use tethering can continue to do so at no extra charge until the promotion’s end date.”

This promotion, just like all others, is “Subject to Change”. And at the rate things are going lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if the date changed again. I will try to post the official statement when it becomes available.

Is the “Promo” word the new way to get thing out of control of customer. That way, Rogers can remove it when they want or change ( for that it would be Charge ) the price they want because it's not in data contract and that way there is no Code of conduct that apply for the “promo”.

Tethering is not a Promo it is a plan feature. I asked several times when this story first broke.

If they start charging me for tethering I will use that as an opportunity to switch to Bell with no cancellation fee.

Fuckin Rogers I wouldn't pay for tetheringfor a service I already paid for 6 gb/30 and I use 5 gb a Month I wouldn't pay or tethering I would just download help.Benjamin robbers shouldn't make u pay bell and telus has tethering on 500 mb. Robbers is gonna lose a lot of customers

Well, we found out this news 9 days before the deadline. Hopefully they will update customers prior to May 3, 2010 on what will happen. But it seems like they are going to just keep “extending” this so called “promo” to make them seem like a better company vs their competitors. We aren't stupid.

WIND please come to London Ontario in 1.5 years!! My contract is over and I want to sign up with you. No SAF, no setup fee, no 911 fee, and simple $35 plan for unlimited data + tethering and $45 for Canada wide calling without any daytime minute crap!

Wind may be appealing, but make sure you look at their roaming charges outside your calling area before you switch.

EXACTLY! As much as I wish I could agree with Gary's comment below, I have a strong feeling this was only extended because Telus/Bell haven't rolled out charges yet. I'm sure there's some kind of price fixing going on between the companies (how do you explain the exact same price increases/decreases/plan-changes in the same day?) so once they've “agreed” in non- official terms to charge for tethering, you'll suddenly see them both roll out charges at the same time. The only other explanation for the extension is they haven't determined a reliable method to differentiating tethered traffic from on-device traffic.

Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between using my data to access the web or mail as opposed to using my data for tethering? What's it matter to them how I use my data package? It's still data is it not?

Is there something I'm not understanding?

X1Zero

There's is no difference. The carriers try to make a separate
distinction so that they can cash in

There is no Differnce how u use it it just a way for robbers to screw the customer their monoply is over and they wanna screw the current customers as much as they can that's the differnce

Well this sounds nice for time being but I expect more changes may happen from Rogers due to Telus/Bell and now WIND (DAVE?) in for iPhone/carrier market. Rogers has to start sucking up to there customers, or will they…

Thanks John, you too!

Their roaming charge is 25c/min which is less than Robbers 35c/min for long distance the moment I step out of my local calling area!!

I signed up with Fido last August with the 6GB/$30 data plan and I use tethering regularly. My contract (which is in French) stated the following under the “Promotions/rabais” heading in the plan details: “util. app. modem sans fil”. This sounds like “utilisation appareil (or application) modem sans fil” which is TETHERING. I don't see how this can be taken away from me without breach of contract. Any thoughts?

It is a breach of contract in a way. But they don't care it's robbers they'll do whatever they want plus u should pay for tethering anyways

Rogers sells 6gb / month @ $30 in the expectation that MOST (not all) people won't use anywhere near that 6gb of data. They are likely overselling their network capacity. If they allow tethering on this same plan, people will use more data for the same amount of revenue, and they can't oversell their network quite as much that way, which means less money.

It's quite simple why they do it, it's just a shame. Data is data is data. I paid 6gb, I want to use it how I want. I'd rather they not oversell the data.

Solution? Jailbreak your phone and use one of the 3rd party tethering options. I haven't bothered jailbreaking my phone as of yet but if they intend on charging for tethering, that's the option I'm going with.

They can't charge us twice. That's just stupid.

its almost like they chaned ths for me. I am student and almost done. I dint wanna sign up for a wireless contract for 4 months n so wanted to tether. then i found out abt rogers cutting us off on dec 31st n was worried abt wat i wud do. happy again. yay! 🙂

I think it is still impossible to tether on Fido with a 500MB plan (non jailbroken)!! This royally pisses me off. 500 MB is enough for me with tethering. I have a great plan and don't want to mess that up by upgrading the data. Plus $15 extra just for tethering (upgrade to 1GB plan) just doesn't seem worthwhile.

The CDslash profile change that worked pre 3.1 doesn't work anymore.

Any trick that still works? Would Fido reconsider this dumb exception?

Everything in WIND is just temporarily to attract customers.

I will be calling Fido again tomorrow but today I've called them twice and was told that so long as I have the 1gb plan tethering data will be included in my data. Both representatives seemed to indirectly imply that that will occur *so long as I see tethering on the invoice*, i.e. none of them said precisely whether I will be able to tether until I drop the data plan.

Well you're clearly not in the majority judging by all the commenters on this blog.

Although I'm not happy about the fact that Rogers wants to charge for tethering…I have to disagree with you when you say “They wanna SCREW the current customers”. I can assure you that it's not the intention of Rogers to “screw” anyone. It's all about business, and if you owned the company, and were able to charge for services, I'm pretty damned sure that you would.

Listen Iloverogers don't be down on your knees to much for the Rogers excuvtives clearly your aren't thinking clearly so if you have 1gb for 30 bucks alreAdy a rip off you have to pay to use your bandwidth which you already paid for again to have the privellege of using the data plan you paid for 10 bucks a month on top of already high voice and data plans that range in the average of 80 to 100 bucks so yes there screwing the customer bell and telus plans exceed robbers plans without even trying
