Our fellow iPhoneinCanada.ca reader and top designer/illustrator Pierre Tabbiner created this little “image” for people who are trying to hold themselves off from buying an iPhone 3G. I was going to post it a while back but totally forgot.

Anyways, if anyone is desperate enough to have this as their wallpaper to remind themselves, you can download all three (1280×800, 1920×1200, 1680×1050) from here. Here’s a sneak peek:

No offense but Pierre is on crack!!! Listing all those benefits and then trashing them like they are insignificant. I owned an ipod touch…and the touch is a JOKE compared to the iphone. I used to carry around my phone and my ipod touch…now i can carry just one device. Who uses texting?? My name is not Brie and i am 33 years old…and my girlfriend texts me all the time when we can’t actually talk on the phone. The point about Rogers…kudos to Rogers!!! Yup I said it! If they were smart enough to set up a GSM network…then they have every right to monopolize! Bell was the monopoly for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time with home phone service and are still living in the stone ages with their wireless network! I have a decent MY5 Canada Wide plan, 125 sent and unlimited received texts, early evening calling, 250 daytime minutes, call display, voicemail and all of the other goodies and i pay less than 45 a month after taxes!!! No data plan as I don’t feel I would utilize it. Basically, stop being cheap!!! The phone is worth it! If it wasn’t for Rogers, who would have brought Canada the iphone??? Sure as hell not Bell!!! People who try to legitimize not getting the iphone because the have a touch are just plain CHEAP!

    Ok my rant is done!

Well, those points are legit, if you are willing to wear around a utility belt to hold all of your portable electronics. The way I see it, all cell companies in Canada are a rip off… So I choose to get ripped off from the company that releases the coolest phones. As of right now, my iPhone is a glorified iPod touch… My plan is the same as it was previous to buying the iPhone with no data plan, for cheaper than an itouch. I would have ended up signing my life away anyway for another 3 years, so I’m glad it for an iPhone

This image was created by an angry person who is annoyed because they couldn’t get an iPhone (either because they can’t find one [www.rogers.com] or because they’re too expensive for them). I have an iPhone. 6GB of data for $30 isn’t too bad. $10 cheaper would certainly be a lot better, but I’ll live with paying $70 / month for 2500 text, 6GB data, Visual Voicemail, unlimited incoming and 150 outgoing minutes (*BLAH*)

Anyways, 9 / 13 points can be said about any device on the market. I’m not counting every MB with my 6GB of data. Costly extras point is only relevant for ppl who have owned a touch. Free WiFi is not available in most places. There are very few places, least where I live to where I work, that you can access WiFi. And lets see you do WiFi hopping without getting annoyed (as you’re riding in a bus or a car and surfing Gizmodo).

Installer and Summerboard are UNSUPPORTED applications. Of course they’re not going to be pre-loaded onto the iPhone. You have the AppStore now. Use that.

Next time you want to bash a device, at least get an image of the device you’re bashing.

    Cheers,

  • Hah! Fun to see this in your blog Gary! Thanks!

Everybody: just a disclaimer. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the iPhone. As much as any of you do. I saw Steve Jobs extolling its virtues over 2 years when the product was first announced. I’ve prayed for the Canada release for years.
This image is the result of me locking myself in the house on July 11th, so I wouldn’t wind up at a Rogers store signing away 3 years & $3600. That’s all. It’s more of a “pouting in the dark” thing than a “stand up & be heard” thing.

Well that is a little more reassuring to hear Pierre because truly…the itouch is not even close to the iphone! I thought you were crazy for a minute! I had the touch too and now that i can only carry one device around that does everything…it is nice!!! Three years on a phone plan is truly not bad…I have the grandfathered MY5 plan and i would resign for 10 years! I am getting a really good deal…and from the feedback of others to this post, a lot of us do not have the data plan…so saying it will cost $3600 is a drastic embelishment! Don’t compromise your enjoyment…just grab an iphone!

JJ: YES you can get the iphone without a data plan!! you must have a phone plan though that costs at least $30 a month with them and you must sign for 3 years…MAKE sure have them disable to data on their end as well so you don’t get any surprise phone bills for data usage!!

  • Are you sure about that?
I was recently very disappointed at my local Rogers store.
ME: “So, can I buy the device alone?”
ROGERS CANADA (RC): “No, you need to sign a 3-year plan”
ME: “OK, so, I get get free wifi here & there, can I not get a data plan, and just get by on free wifi?”
RC: “No, you need a combined voice & data plan to get the iPhone AT ALL.”

This totally turned me off. I’ve never had a cell phone, and I’ve never been told that I couldn’t “buy the cereal without a year’s worth of milk”.
I’ve wondered if my bad experience was limited to one odd employee. I mean to go to another store with the same questions, but so far, I’ve heard that you need to buy everything in order to get anything.

    Am I wrong?

Pierre: Thats odd. I recently called 2 Rogers Plus stores, i clearly asked them if you could buy the iphone without out a data plan. The Rogers Plus store i called, i was able to talk to the manager and he said, “Of course you can, but it is recommended that you do get a data plan”

Pierre: you have to understand…it is a relatively new launch…chalk some of it up to them just not knowing…chalk some of it up to others that want more sales and will lie to you….I GUARANTEE you…i got the phone and did not get a data plan…their own brochure in the store even states…as long as you have a phone plan of at least $30, you are fine! I called a few minutes later…blocked both edge and 3g on rogers side, and 3g on my phone…if i try to access the internet when i am not near wifi, it says NO CAN DO! (not exactly in those words)

Just call them…be confidant that you know it can be done…and get your phone on a my 5 plan..ENJOY!

you can do better than the $30 minimum (Acntually it is $30.01 so u get stuck with the $35 plan). I ordered over the phone from rogers. I kept my $18 voice plan and just use wifi. Yes, I forfeited $50 one-time discount – but saved $17/mo x 36 months

Yes, ask that they block the data – also you can use ‘Fake APN’ to ensure Edge is disabled (say when you are roaming)

I thought this post was HILARIOUS!!!! Well, the wallpapers at least. I would certainly hope people would see the humour in the whole situation, but evidently some took it to heart. “Why so serious?”
Anyways, I REALLY do need the posters – and so do a couple of my friends, as we do not want the proverbial ball & chain around our ankles when comes time to jump ship i.e when a new national GSM network pops up in Canada, and I can move my beautiful mint condition, battery/Installer-friendly 1st gen to said network. Until then, I can only sigh, salivate a little every time I see a 3G, and look at the wonderful reminder (aka wallpaper) of why I refuse to get ripped off. And yes, it is a conscious choice, I’m not being “cheap”.

I am very eager to get an iPhone, but I just don’t know whether the data plans offered by Rogers/Fido are sufficient. What do most people think of the existing data plans?

The 6 gigs/30$ plan is more than enough for my usage.

It’s 200mo each day and I need to watch a lot of youtube video and spend a lot of time using the datato get close to this 200mo.

The average week of usage show around 40-60mo daily. I reached 145mo in a single day when I got the phone.

If 200mo a day is not enough, you have way way too much time to spare.

    Same here…
I went to purchase the iphone 3G but was “seriously” discouraged by the rep when he said that Fido could only block EDGE but they couldn’t do anything about 3G. He also mentionned that if i chose to go without their 30$/plan, I’m risking to get some expensive surprises!! He mentionned that Fido charges some 5 cent/kb anytime you use the net… so a regular google page would cost you an arm and a leg.
    See;
the 2nd generation of iphones has 3 tools that could connect you to the net..
1-EDGE..2-3G..3-WIFI. (1st generation only had EDGE and WIFI)
Apperently, Fido can turn EGDE off but if you connect to the net by WIFI and somehow, you get disconnected, 3G automatically kicks in and and this is where it all goes bad.
After my 30 minute chit chat with the rep, i went to a Rogers store and asked the same questions, THE ANSWERS WERE THA SAME.
So i settled for the Motorola Z6w witch I HATE WITH PASSION…. it is my first motorola and i really can’t deal with it for many reasons. My last phone was an iphone 1st Gen… and i loved it. But somehow, a part of the screen stopped working. I was told that it was the digitizer and that it costs some like 200$ to fix… $#@& it…

    See;
the 2nd generation of iphones has 3 tools that could connect you to the net..
