Tidy Up! Finds and Deletes Duplicate Files on your Mac Review/Giveaway!

This post is not so much iPhone-related but more for maintaining your Mac. If you’re using a Mac you may be losing precious hard drive space to duplicate files. These could be MP3s, pictures, downloadable files, etc. Whatever the case, finding each duplicate file can be a virtual pain in the rear. That’s where the Mac software Tidy Up! comes into play.

Here’s a description of some notable TidyUp features:

With Tidy Up! you can search for duplicate files and packages; by the owner application, content, type, creator, extension, time modified, time created, name, label, visibility and date/age. You can also search by the tag, duration and bit installments of MP3 and AAC sound files and EXIF metadata* , search the contents of the iPhoto, Aperture, iTunes, iPod databases and Mail mailboxes, and synchronize deletions with iPhoto, Mail and iTunes.

Tidy Up! allows you to search for duplicate folders; by name, date modified, date created, label visibility, empty folders, their contents and more.

If you have a large photo collection or you have tonnes of MP3s, duplicate files can be a problem. Tidy Up! makes it simple to find and delete these files. I had the chance to try Tidy Up! on my Mac and I was able to free up some much needed space on my hard drive (I really do need to upgrade from my 160GB). The program was fairly straightforward and easy to use. Check out a couple screens below:

Oh, man, I really need this! I'm sure I have tons of duplicate pics and audio files. Been wanting to get rid of them, but it's such a daunting task!

  • I am buried under a bunch of duplicate images and audio! This would be a godsend!!

  • I seriously need “Tidy Up”! I am a fledgling blogger and long-time photographer with thousands of photos. I've had this Mac for over 5 years and can't afford a new one right now. I was recently trying to decide how to salvage my disk space, which is minimal and is starting to affect my work. This would be the perfect solution! Thanks!

  • nbrunner

With my memory I could have 50 of the same files and still forget and put another on.

  • greg

MSO is always after me to tidy up, tidy-as-I-go, leave things as tidy as when I came, Ò€¦
This could be the start of a whole new me!!

  • Martin de Bernardo

Wow, this is what I have been looking for. My iTunes library is in bad shape to many duplicates. That is the case for my pictures as well. This app would help me to gain back my lost space on my all ready full laptop hard drive.

  • Mike B

I just switched from iPhoto to Aperture and I messed up somewhere along the way. It seems I now have 2 of every photo. Seeing as I have 1000's of RAW images shot with my Nikon D5000, this is eating up tonnes of space. I could sure use that program!

  • Steve Y

What with all my downloads I end up with all kinds of duplicates eating up tons of space. I also have about 350 GB of pictures on an external drive, it would be nice to free up space on that drive. This sure would help.

  • I have multiples backups in the same HD, I need to eliminate dups from it.

Haven't entered a giveaway in awhile because I haven't really needed the product and thought it would be better if someone won who really wanted it. This, however, would be unbelievably perfect for me! My mom just took some old baby tapes and got them turned into DVDs and watching them was just about the best thing in the world. I want to make sure none of my photos and videos are getting lost, so I've been working on copying them out of iPhoto and onto DVDs. I don't know if it's truly hard or I'm just retarded, but I keep screwing up and copying the files to the wrong place and burning the DVD wrong and stuff like that. Tidy Up! would be AWESOME for me because I have tons of photos and videos in different folders of my Mac from failed backup attempts and this would really help me organize the files on my Mac and clear up space. Eternal thanks, guys! I still can't believe how lucky I was to have found your website 2 years ago. I've been addicted ever since!

I came across Tidy Up when I looked around for deduplication software for my external harddrive. It was definitely the most promising candidate.

I'd love to win as I haven't been able to cope with the mess on my HDD yet. πŸ˜‰

  • Ok, here is my case
    <begin pleading>
    Here is my pain calculator
10 years with digital camera + 7 PCs / 3 Macs x 1 Wife that made copies any time she was distributing said photos + 1 restored backup = 100K pictures to sort

    πŸ™‚ Thanks for the shot

  • Sounds interesting. Count me in!

  • Azim

Amazing… that is what I really need. I am always running on only 3-5 gig space on my computer so I urgently need to remove my duplicate files. It is so tedious but with this program, my system can work better.

  • M. T. MacPhee

Help! I know I need this. I have know I have lots of dups, but they are so hard to track down.

  • This program sounds really good. Having a MacBook Pro with only 160GB is a little limiting. I'm always deleting unwanted stuff. I'm sure Tidy Up! could help me find a few duplicates and make my life a little easier.

    Awesome promotion!

this would help me deal with all those compilation albums that have copies of songs I already have somewhere. It's a mess in iTunes to deal with, this should sort it.

  • Lola

    Thanks for the great article!

I eventually switched from Windows to Mac a couple of weeks ago. I took all those unsorted files and folders and put it onto the new Mac. It's the only thing between me and the “fresh start” with OS X. I'd love to make the great spring clean-out with Tidy Up. πŸ˜‰

  • Janet Gettings

I need this for photos! Would love to hear if others have found it useful. I am a confirmed Mac user and have been forever.

  • Henry

    24 hours a day
23,000 photos to sort from merging clones of harddrives
    TidyUp — priceless! πŸ™‚

  • Caryn

That would solve a lot of lack-of-space problems. Fingers crossed.

  • Taz B.

I need to tidy up my MACBOOK asap! Too much school garbage.

  • BL

Sadly, my MacBook's total capacity is 120 GB, so I'm anything that could even erk out another 5 GB of space would be a godsend!

  • SloGo

Constantly dealing with dupes, this would help me so much. Tidy ME Up!

  • tie me up πŸ˜€

  • Gecko Dude

Once again I have proven that no matter the size of your hard drive I have managed to fill it up again. This would aid immensely it trimming it back to size I'm sure!

  • Jack

I load to much music and video so … Tidy me up !

  • Wuju

Bought my Mac with SSD with minimal hard drive space – this would greatly save me some precious expensive memory space. Thank you.

  • Miomin

    I'd love this

  • MG

It would benefit me because I tend to copy my files everywhere. It would be the first step (of many) to a good file management system.

Another alternative solution that I am using is “DuplicateFilesDeleter” I’ve been using this for over a year now.
