iLife ’11 Issues – Backup Your iPhone Pictures And Videos!
If you are thinking about installing the newly released iLife ’11, you may want to hold on. A number of people are reporting issues updating from iPhoto ’09 to iPhoto ’11.
The first I heard of the issues was from former wedding photographer, and now business man Gary Fong. After installing iPhoto ’11, he was unable to launch the program. After a long call with Apple’s tech support, they were unable to get it working, and he found out this is a bigger issue for others.
Apparently, installing iPhoto ’11 can cause you to lose some or all of your pictures and videos. This is also making the rounds on Apple’s Discussion Forums. I should point out this hasn’t affected everyone.
So far there hasn’t been any official word from Apple.
If you are going to go ahead with the iPhoto ’11 install, here are a couple of tips that may save you from losing some or all your pictures and videos.
- Use Apple’s Time Machine software. This way if you encounter a problem, you can restore your computer to a date before you installed iPhoto ’11.
- Back up your photo’s and videos onto a external hard drive or disk. It sounds simple but so many people don’t do it. This way, if your media library is erased, you’ll have a backup.

Another “issue” with iPhoto 11 is that your library is updated. This will force Time Machine to do a full backup of your iPhoto library. Make sure you have enough space on your Time Machine drive. I didn’t and TM will keep failing.
There is another problem, when you sync iMovie with iPhoto, it corrup your video and you have to re-import your videos into iPhoto again.
So far, I have not had any issues. Love the Movie Trailers feature in iMovie. So fun!

Everything look fine for me except for video. I cant drag and drop video from iphoto to my desktop anymore. Apple you should have tested this out more.
Who knows, maybe if we get lucky they’ll release an apology by giving everyone free ilife and a fix. Fingers crossed 🙂
Thats one of the reason y i dont use iPhoto, it’s an awesome program. But If i have to make an extra copy for everything thats just a waste of space. iPhoto should be BUILT into the OS itself!! =)
I’m confused… the article title implies that only the pics and videos on your iPhone are at risk but in reading the article it sounds like the pics and videos on my computer are at risk too???
PLEASE CLARIFY. Thanks.
