iOS 27 Kills the Most Annoying Feature in Messages

Apple has officially introduced a user interface toggle in the iOS 27 Messages app that directly addresses a viral design complaint raised in the past by pop superstar Justin Bieber.

The drama started late last year when the singer took to his personal social media channels to voice his immense frustration with the stock Messages application layout on the iPhone.

Bieber pointed out a persistent user experience flaw regarding the placement of the dictation microphone icon. In the standard iMessage text field, the digital send button and the voice dictation tool occupied nearly the exact same real estate on the screen depending on whether a user was actively typing or had just finished sending a text.

Bieber explained that whenever he tried to text friends while listening to music, his thumb would accidentally double-tap the interface and trigger the microphone.

This minor misstep would cause the phone to emit a loud system beep, which instantly paused his music playback and ruined his listening rhythm. The pop star famously joked that if the dictation button interrupted his music one more time, he would hunt down everyone at Apple and put them in a rear-naked chokehold, adding that a single button should never hold multiple conflicting functions in the exact same spot.

Fast forward to the release of the iOS 27 developer beta, and Apple has officially given in to the feedback. Users can now navigate to the dedicated Apps menu, select Messages, and find a toggle labeled “Show in Text Field” under the dictation options.

By flipping this switch to off, the problematic microphone shortcut is completely banished from the chat box. This leaves the input field entirely clean, ensuring that the send button handles one task and one task only.
