Kudos Payments: Another Mobile Payment System for Canada

Share:

It was only a few days ago that we reviewed Payfirma, a mobile payment system that is similar to the more popular Square but is available for use in Canada. Now NetSecure Technologies has introduced Kudos.

Square, Payfirma and Kudos all have the same premise – to allow any size of business to accept credit cards as a form of payment by using a small swipe terminal mounted in the audio jack of your phone. Kudos was developed to work in Canada and the US for the iOS, RIM and Android platforms as well as being supported on the Mac and PC.

Great! So how much is this going to cost? Initial cost is $49.99 from their website for the package that includes a swipe terminal, POS software and merchant account, but if you hurry you can get a free one for a limited time offer. After that, each transaction will cost you 2.90% + $0.20. To compare with Payfirma, they charge $99 for the swipe terminal and fees are 2.50% + $0.25 after that. Neither charge a monthly fees or additional surcharges.

I tried to download the app from the App Store and see what it could do without the swipe terminal but couldn’t seem to find it and when I signed up for an account at the site, I got a message saying “We will be in touch soon with more information.”

Are you a small business owner who has been waiting for this, or have you found a different solution?

I signed up for Payfirma. They actually have a $50 set up fee, plus the $99 for the swiper. Monthly fees are $15 plus $10 of minimum processing fees. This was for visa and mastercard only. I didn’t sign up for Amex.

What about additional charges for the use of “premium” cards? Merchant account processors charge different rates depending on the card: Cash-back, airmile, etc cards cost retailers more than cards without a loyalty program attached.

Dan from Kudos here.  To clarify the comments above, with Kudos, what you see is what you pay.  No setup fee.  No monthly fees.  2.9%+$0.20 flat on all transactions, regardless of card type.  We’re trying to really simplify the process – ultimately our philosophy is that you, as a merchant, shouldn’t have to spend any money on your terminal unless you’re making money.

So you don’t need a merchant account? Kudos is a third-party processor? Isn’t merchant aggregation illegal in Canada? Confused? Who is the merchant then? How long does Kudos hold funds? Why is there nothing on the kudos website about this product and how it works? Also doesn’t seem to be anything on the internet about Kudos apart from their own press releases…who are some clients “Dan?” that use this?

With 2.9% and 20 cents, wouldn’t it be cheaper just to use Paypal mobile?

Tried signing up for Kudos. 3 days later I get an email telling me how busy they are and that they will get back to me later. 7 days later I get another email telling me that they are out of swipers and will let me know when more arrive. That was 3 weeks ago and heard nothing since.

anyone still answering this feed if i have a question?

The swiper makes no difference in functionality, only in convenience.  You do not need a swiper at all to use the app.

Just so all are clear, 2.9% is a very HIGH flat rate, it is higher than your average complying rate for a transaction by about .8 %  That’s a lot.  considering 70% of all transaction are qualifying on average, they are basically charging you non-qualifying rates on EVERY transaction.

  • it does make a difference the % fee charged is best with the swiper, usually save about 0.5% of the transaction with the swipper
