Setup Rogers EDGE Settings for the iPhone

Canada has some of the most expensive data rates in the world. Remember the guy with the $85,000 phone bill?! Anyways, if you want to setup your iPhone with Rogers, make sure you’re on a data plan if you want to use mobile internet (WiFi remains free). It’s going to be expensive so get ready!

How to Setup Rogers EDGE Settings on the iPhone

  1. Settings –> General –> Network –> EDGE
  2. Enter the following settings:
    • APN: internet.com
    • Username: wapuser1
    • Password: wap

There is a VISION 10MB data plan for $10/month that requires a 36 month contract. Cancellation fees are as follows:

  • Cancel before 12 months: $100
  • Cancel after 12 months: $25

Regular price for monthly plan is $10/month for the 10MB plan. Also, a plan that isn’t advertised is the 1GB plan for $65. Why someone would pay this much for data is beyond me!

Here’s the scary part: the fee is $0.05/kb over the 10MB–that means if you go over by 1MB, you’ll pay about $50! This package is not for the lightweight user–for those times you have no WiFi.

Here’s a small breakdown of usage.

SENT/RECEIVED
Application – sent/received (kb)

For every restart – 1/1 (Apparently also does this periodically)
To check weather – 3/4
Google maps – 7/43
Zoom and a small pan – 9/75
Email check (3×50) – 18/320
Open email – 4/14
Safari (Google.com) and search – 9/34

The numbers above add up to approx. 60/500 (That’s half a megabyte already)!

Thanks to user happysmp for his contribution to the information above, courtesy of the Hackint0sh forums! The bottom line is that data plans on Rogers are a big rip off! I can’t wait for the day when another GSM carrier enters the Canadian market, to break down this monopoly by Rogers!

    I’m going to start up a plan with rogers for my unlocked iphone within the next few days, but i’m not going to get a data plan. And I just have a quick question about EDGE:
    When i’m not in a wi-fi hotspot, and i go on safari or any app that uses the internet without the intent to use the internet, will i be charged for that on my monthly plan? Or can i control EDGE so that i won’t be able to access the internet if i’m not in a hotspot?

    2) I am on the plan $80/500megs a month, with no contract (this is just a data plan, I am just using the iphone for a mobile data device). It is labelled a “Windows Mobile Plan” (but it works with any device, including iphones). You can see the plan here:

    For the past 3 months my VOICE detailed billing on my Rogers SIM / US AT&T purchased phone
    shows almost all telephone calls as ROAMING calls with an associated fee.

    I’ve disabled data roaming in the network settings. However the voice roaming charges are still occurring.

    Rogers client services gladly credits me the difference but there are no settings on the iphone to
    disable voice roaming, only data roaming.

    Anyone else experiencing this? or have a fix?

    u must be living close to a US tower. ur phone is set on automatic picking up the strongest signal which apears to be the AT&T signal… go to homescreen>settings>Carrier>and select ROGERS.

    Hi Kumail, thanks for the response. I guess my question was pretty open ended. What I am wondering is what exactly does “email check” mean – is it an automatic think that goes out periodically to check to see if you have email and how often etc… or is it something the individual would do etc…

    Well it can be set in three ways …

    Manually
    every 15mins
    every 30mins
    and every 60mins

    I personally keep mine on every 15mins due to the fact i need quick responses to go out.

    if u are only hooking it up to your hotmail and not work i would do it maually

Since I have not received my first monthly bill yet, I was just wondering whether or not I will be charged. Sometimes a message pops up saying that I am not subscribed with Edge but I still see the E symbol once in awhile.

    A warning to every heavy iPhone user in Canada!

    Just got off the phone with Rogers “Customer Service”. I travelled to Germany and used my iPhone for just two days.

    Rogers charged me for 22 MB on these two days $1148.

    In my opinion this is ridiculous!

    If I wouldn’t have stopped using my Rogers phone after two days and used it for the rest of my stay (14 days) my phone bill would be $8036… just for data usage.

    At Rogers they think this is a valid price.

    I am recommending everybody with a similiar experience to call Customer Service and be tough! Don’t speak to normal call center staff. Ask for a supervisor.

    I got a 50% discount on the data bill. That’s still more than $25 per megabyte. Compared to the $3 per megabyte for over plan usage a total rip-off.

    If I would treat my customers that way… I would be bankrupt within no time.

    5¢/KB Can get very expensive really fast. Be very careful how you use Edge at this point. I hope the new plan in March is for real then you can get a good amount of EDGE for a fixed rate. In January my son went over by about 1mb and it cost $70 for that part alone.

    the girl from rogers told me if i just want to check email and ‘surf’ webpages… all i need is the $20/month mobile browser plan… which works on non rogers handsets.

    can someone please explain these details to me??!?!

    what would i do different with more ‘data’ ????

    im on prepaid cards and I see the “E” quite a bit too but it doesn’t get deducted from my remaining funds. If you try to get on safari or other online related tasks it should say cannot connect because you are not subscribed to Edge, so I don’t think you will be billed for it… hopefully someone on a billing plan can let you know

    I would like that clarified as well. I am switching from BELL, with an HTC TOUCH…to ROGERS and an IPHONE (little scary…I’ve been with Bell for 14 years and only making the leap for the iphone).
    I had unlimited mobile browser with Bell, and could surf til my fingers bled. The websites would default to “mobile browser” versions, but I could type in manually the actual site names, and it would take me there. Didn’t seem to have any “restrictions” as to what/where I could surf (had it since October and no additional charges).
    I’m the same as Vincent…I only use the “cell network” for internet very rarely and only for the maps, some e-mail, and the odd random google searches…I “manually” check e-mail (hotmail/rogers)…and I update the weather feature. If unl. mobile browser is the same for Rogers as it was for Bell, you (Vincent) and I will have NO issues.
    As for your question about using “data” while surfing the web on WIFI…your first thought was correct. You can do whatever you want “online” without incurring any data costs from Rogers.

    Go with a prepaid plan with phone cards… thats what I use. It hasn’t charged me anything to go online with my edge not activated and using wifi. Not sure why your bill would be that high unless they have some way of knowing you have an iphone and it’s a penalty charge 🙂

    I would imagine even with the amount you would pay for calls through prepaid cards it would still be way cheaper than what they are charging you with a monthly billing plan.

    Just got off the phone with Rogers about their data plans and it looks like there may be an option for iPhone users right now. We cannot have (nor do we want) the $7/mo unlimited data plan because we do not have certified phones and the data is text only, not html and no e-mail. HOWEVER, he suggested the “Windows Mobile” plan which is does NOT need an approved Rogers device, so he said my iPhone would work with it for unrestricted data and e-mail. Right now they have a deal that for $15/mo you get unlimited data/e-mail for 90 days, then you have a choice of a 2mb – $15/mo, 4mb – $25/mo, 8mb – $40/mo, 30mb – $60/mo or 500mb -$80/mo plan. At least you can get some unlimited access where you don’t have to pay .05/kb now for 90 days. Check out the web site under Wireless and Windows Mobile to see if this would work for you.

    He knew I was talking on a non-certified device but he didn’t know what it was until I told him.

    P.S. He doesn’t know when the iPhone is officially coming to Canada.

    I just got off the phone with rogers after changing my plan, and i asked him about the unlimited mobile browsing, i read that it was only for certified handsets and Marlon the CSR helping me told me that it applies to any handset that can browse the internet, I made sure to write down his name and interaction number in case I get any funny charges.

    Is the unlimited $15 email for Blackberry plan compatible with an iPhone?

    I have the “Windows Mobile” option and am using the standard EDGE settings and everything works just fine. e-mail can be a bit slow and photos usually get bumped to cannot send, but when I run e-mail then go through fine. Got up to 4.9mb of EDGE last month and no additional charges.

    One thing I learned was you need the latest 4000 series SIM card for EDGE to work properly. If you have an old SIM card, just go to a Rogers outlet and get a new one and that should solve those issues.

With normal roger subscription phones not iphones, the home page sets automatically to this page, it is the rogers NavIgate page…anyone know…it will cut down the charges apparently…I spoke to a rep. about this…let me know.

    I am having issues with my edge on rogers. I got the package of $30 for 300mbs plan for smart phones but got text stating large amounts owed. I called them and was basically told that i have a non-rogers phone and even though i have a data plan they are not reading the data properly for there billing plan.     We have 30 million people in the largest geographical country using cell phones, so it makes to me that our wireless would cost more than the USA where they have the advantage in terrain and over 250 million people for economies of scale. Sure I would like a lower price, but people get real, this is a great phone not a computer.

    I’ve tried to install winpwn several times and didn’t work (crashed everytime on verifying software) then I went back to ziphone 3.0-reinstalled everything, used same sets wapuser1/wap/internet.com and everything works fine.     I just upgraded to 2.0 with pwn tool and it does not give the option to set edge, b ut it works just want to make sure i am not missing something as i have the 6gb plan with rogers and want to make sure i get billed properly.

    Hello I am on the rogers network and trying to set up my email accounts and nothing seems to work of have used the Other and POP and entered in the Pop account and STMP account and still nothing. Would somebody please be able to let me know what the correct settings are. As well as what to enter in the SSL settings.

    I have a locked Fido iphone I bought from Craigslist, which I put my old Fido SIM into. Fido don’t know I have an iphone. I told them I wanted my data blocked on my phone so that I can only use WIFI, they said it was but if there was no WIFI signal that it may kick in. I turned my phone on last night for the 1st time, the WIFI works, today I was out and checked my email the ‘E’ (edge) symbol came up, does anyone know how this works and if I will be charged everytime the ‘E’ symbol comes up?
