Question: Is it safe to update to iPhone 2.1 firmware and QuickPwn (Windows version) to jailbreak and re-unlock a first gen iPhone? It currently has firmware 1.1.4 and was jailbroken and unlocked using ziphone? I’m a little concerned since QuickPwn and ziPhone are different and I don’t want any conflicts bricking the iPhone.

Same thing here.. I just used the tool, everything was fine, but after the last reboot, he froze here… He reboot every 5 minutes and froze again for another 5 min. Even if I reset it (holding MENU and POWER for 10 sec), He don’t boot anymore…

i jailbroke my first gen iphone to 2.1 two days ago the process was unnaturally smooth. was worried all my cydia data from my previous firmware would be gone, but after reinstalllin some apps they was dere! strange! and its still unlocked and, as i can tell, the exact same. battery life does seem bitchingly good though. and i hope a fring or skype generic comes out soon this prepaid plan makes me feel uncomfortable.

Did mind, it works perfectly. Patience is the key. don’t let the apple logo scares you if it stays there for some time.

Mine is also stuck on the apple logo, and has been for over 5 minutes now. Every once in awhile it will do two quick vibrates. What could be wrong?

I use iPhoneModem and it works great. I have a video of it here. They won’t know since the data goes through the iPhone and uses a proxy connection.

I have the same problem when trying to start quickpwn (0xc000013) I thought it was my computer but I see other people having the same issue.

The error that you both are having is due to not having the .NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable installed. Simple google for it and you can dload it from microsoft. Should work after that.

Thanks alot that did it quickpwn is booting up fine now. Ok only one more question i am on rogers with my iphone have been on the fence about jailbreaking. Am a pretty safe and is it worth it. I don’t want to screw up my phone. I will not lose anything I already have and service will be fine after the jailbreak process.

im on 2.0.2 still cause i dont want to ungrade and loose all my apps that i have when i jailbroke is there a program where i can save everything and then put it back on when i jailbreak 2.1 without loosing anything?

You can do so, however you must not update via iTunes. Use WinPwn or Pwnage Tool to build a custom firmware first. I will get some more details for you once I update my first gen from 2.0.1 to 2.1.

I would strongly consider 2.1 since the firmware is less buggy and way faster!

The app is called “MakeitMine” by Erica Sadun…search for it in Cydia or Installer.

It should work fine, just follow the video. However, if you’re reluctant and worried you might damage your iPhone, obviously stay away from jailbreaking… good luck

Out of curiosity, how many AppStore apps did you have installed and how long did it take for your phone to reboot (counting from the Apple logo)? My theory is that the amount of time that takes is directly proportional to the amount of apps you have.

This is probably because a cache of all installed apps is being regenerated during that time (it needs to be regenerated, or else Cydia and Installer wouldn’t show up until you installed a new app via the AppStore).

For now it might be quicker to use QuickPwn on a freshly restored iPhone (before you sync the apps to it). There are ways to get around this with code, but we need to really ascertain what causes it before we go ahead and try it. It’d be great if you could be a data point in that regard. Thanks!

I just got my iphone 3g like 2 weeks ago…. im guessing its a 2nd generation and i tryed jailbreaking the phone everything seems to work…. but! the first time i did it when i went into installer everything i tryed to download wouldent show up in my apps…. so i restored the phone and tryed jailbreaking it again… the 2nd time everything again worked fine but this time i was able to download anything from install and would show up in apps but now i was unable to dial and or make phone calls??? any help would be great!!

Mine crashed when rebooting after installation – it was stuck when rebooting with the apple logo and kept restarting every 5 min.

I restored to factory settings using itunes and didnt sync any applications and tried qiuckpwn again. This time it worked great!

So,

I’ve followed the article and the comments.. after my first failed jailbreak, i restored the phone to iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw..

I then reran, quickPWN downloaded from http://xs1.iphwn.org/releases/QuickPwn.zip as per the dev website, and also used the ipsw downloaded directly from apple (iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore)

After following all the instructions.. and rebooting, my iPhone is stuck on the screen, and after 7 minutes or so, appears to fail, and in doing so vibrates, and reboots.. this cycle repeats.. ad nauseum… I am not sure what I am doing wrong..

At this point.. I cannot jailbreak my phone.. and the only option is restoring the iphone with the latest update from apple.. not ideal.. as I have many jailbroken apps I want to use in conjunction with the latest update from apple.

At this point I am quite frustrated.. and could really use the wonderful help of this community.. what’s up people! what am I doing wrong?

I didn’t have that many apps when I did the jailbreak. Counting from the Apple logo I would say it was at least a few minutes…have patience!

Try a restore and do it again.

Once you update, QuickPwn 2.1 will detect the firmware…

Good morning, I just have some queries before I go ahead and Jailbreak my 3G 2.1…

Well, one query, really. At the moment, on my iPhone 3G I have apps, Contacts, a TONNE of SMS messages, settings and all that jazz, and am wondering if after the jailbreak process, whether this information will remain, only to be joined by Cydia and Installer, etc.

In other and less confusing terms, does the Jailbreak restore the iPhone 3G to its original form, as well as adding Jailbreak programs, or does it keep my iPhone the way it is, and just add the Jailbreak programs..?

As long as you SYNC before jailbreaking, everything will be backed up. In a nutshell, you jailbreak, re-sync, and voila, the iPhone has the same content as before. Just remember to sync/backup before you JB!

The worst situation, the iPhone will explode in your hand! kidding!

Actually, worst case scenario your iPhone will not turn on. But that is very rare, you can always restore via iTunes to “revive” your iPhone. That being said, we hold no responsibility if anything happens to your iPhone! Just watch the video…good luck.

So I went ahead and use quickpwn 2.1 on my 3G Iphone the other day and everything went smoothly the first time and it was my first time ever jailbreaking an Iphone. Anyways, now I’ve just noticed my 3G signal is not working at all. The 3G icon shows up on the Iphone but not getting any signal. Wifi toggle and Edge toggle are both off. Does anybody having this problem or any fix to this or is this a carrier signal problem? Appreciate any help.

I updated my unlocked iphone 2G through itunes and it didn’t get locked or anyting..very strange since I’m using a SIM from Canada and my phone is from the US.

I downloaded the PWNage tool before updating just in case..but it looks like I don’t have to do anything?

Ok, I just found the solution to my problem of not connecting to 3G network after Quickpwn 2.1. You just have to Reset all Network settings and everything works nicely. Have fun with your Jailbroken Iphones! Cheers!

I started to be a little scared when my iPhone started to reboot every 4-5 minutes with the Apple logo showing up, and vibrating a couple of times every 5 minutes also. Tha loop continued a good half dozen times, maybe more….
I started to read all these comments about frustrated people talking about the same issue and started to dowload the 2.1 image thinking I would have to restore completely the device…

So, patience people! It will work for you too! Mine is a 3G and was already updated to 2.1, had never been jailbroken before. It’s the first time I do it, I was a little scared and finally it worked pretty well.

I just finished jailbreaking my iphone 3g 2.1 for the first time. I was using quickpwn 2.1. but now I’m left with no services….I live in canada and Im with rogers wireless. I just bought this phone yesterday, am affraid I allready bricked it!!! I’ve tryed going through the quickpwn process twice now, and still no luck!! Can someone please help me!

After you JB it and you don’t get any services, try a hard reboot first..power off then back on…..if that doesn’t help then try Resetting Network settings.

If you are really stuck, try a full restore in iTunes. It will bring your iPhone back to its original factory state. Keep us updated.

I have the same problem as everyone else. Everything was fine until it needed to reboot. Keeps rebooting everyonce in a while but in an endless loop. iTunes will no longer recognize it anymore and running it over again did not help either..

So nothing in iTunes? You’re going to have to download the 2.1 firmware by itself, then put your iPhone into DFU Mode (watch the video), which iTunes will then detect. It will ask to restore/repair the iPhone, say yes. Instead of clicking “restore” in iTunes, click SHIFT on your keyboard, then click “restore”.

A ‘browse’ option will pop up, this is where you select the stock 2.1 iPhone firmware. This will restore your iPhone back to normal. Give it a shot!!

thx iphone…I was just about to do that and BANG it came up! The first time took over an hour and I gave up. The 2nd time it was much quicker but about 20min. Not the 10min that all others experienced Ya itunes wasn’t recognizing it . I guess because of the reboots it was going through constantly.

oh one other thing…do you have to disable the ‘check for updates automatically’ in itunes?

Hmmm decided to jail break my phone.. but gettin stuck before i can start.. i follow the movie and all but get stuck at the Quick PWN i hit the next arrow and it goes to browse for firmware. Then it doesnt automatically pop up with anything? it makes me browse myself.. and i cant find it and dont know where it is.. why doesnt it come up like in the video? help!

No. This tutorial is for a “fresh” iPhone 3G out of the box. My iPhone 3G just happened to be previously jailbroken. However, once I updated via iTunes, it basically restored my iPhone to factory settings. QuickPwn does the jailbreak for you.

Did you update to 2.1 via iTunes? If you did, QuickPwn should detect the new firmware.

Nope. You will not lose your service. Everything will be the same as before after the jailbreak. Only difference now is that you have access to Cydia and Installer.

OK i passed that part I guess when your phone already had firmware 2.1 you don’t have the file I just restored my phone and now I have that file. And it autp dects it. Now on the next screen my phone stops on waiting to put ur phone in recovery mode and its been sitting there for about 5 minutes now.

Hi. I can’t get past the first part where it tries to detect the firmware. The firmware won’t detect, it just sits there. I am not sure where to find it by browsing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

try restore to factory settings first.

I noticed that for anyone waiting after the jailbreak process is done, if you reboot your machine, the phone will come back up quickly. It could be due to a hung process on some xp machines. I tested this twice and both times I rebooted when it was done and the phone came back up. The other times where I was waiting I left the quickpwn window open and waited an eternity.

Nope. The iPhone 3G cannot be used overseas unless you bought an unlocked unit from Hong Kong.

I had the same problem. I thought a reboot of the pc helped it come back up but it was just a coincident. You basically jsut have to wait. I had to wait almost an hour. I have friends who’s iphones reboot once and it’s done.. not sure the difference…has nothing to do with apps either because I restored to factory then jailbroke without syncing any apps and same results. It eventually comes back but is a pain.

hey, forget the reboot thing..I think it was pure coincidence. Out of 4 people I know that have iphones, I’m the only one who has to wait almost 1 hour to have the thing reboot after jailbreak. oh well it’s worth it.

Just did mine works like a charm(honestly it took no more then five minutes). I was used to flashing and debranding SE phones. but Quickpwn is by far the easiest I’ve used. Props to the team behind it.And a big thank you to iPhone Fan, great video, keep up the good work.

put the phone in dru mode again and restore in iTunes using shift to select the firmware. You should have a local copy of it.

Has anyone figured out why QuickPwn hangs on “Wait for your iPhone to connect in recovery mode”? I tried everything, I tried two different computers, 6 different usb ports (connect on the computers w/ no extensions), reinstalled, unistalled itunes 8 several times, re-downloaded QuickPwn 2.1 a bunch of times and nothing seems to work. Success!! Ok, for those that had the same problem that I had. Here is what I came up with. After combing through pages and pages information, I found one thread that mentioned the fact that Windows XP SUB drivers could be the reason why QuickPwn 2.1 hangs at the “recovery mode.” Seeing how I set up my laptop and desktop exactly the same (operating system, drivers, etc) I was stuck on both computers. Tonight I went to a friends house and tried to jailbreak and was successful. So if you are having the same problems I had you have two options. 1) use another computer, and 2) update your USB drivers.

Has anyone jailbroken a 3G on VISTA? Any problems?

I did this and it worked. the only downside to this now is that i cannot use my dialpad or make a call to any contacts. i can get incomming calls and text but i cant use dial pad as soon as i press the phone icon it freezes and goes back to the home screen.

So I downloaded the QuickPwn file and my virus scanner popped up and said it had a trojan horse virus and moved the file to the virus vault… so it makes me not want to go any further.

On Vista, SP2, FW Version 2.02 works & stable. I am not sure of 2.1. Use Quickpwn 2.1 Follow instructions . Restore in DFU mode.

I thought I could unlock it with quickpwn but what a surprise when I figured out it doesnt unlonck the 2.1 firmware.

I have successfully jailbroken my iphone 3g with Quickpwn 2.1 on my Windows Vista. I’M SO HAPPY!
However I initially failed to realize that I needed to download an actual firmware file in order for the second step screen (the “Browse” screen) to work, I was under the impression that because my phone is originally version 2.1 it would automatically “detect” the firmware file once in the second step (as it seems to be in the video!).
So to those that are stuck in the second step where they don’t know how to “browse” for the firmware, you need to download the 2.1 IPSW firmware (preferably in your Quickpwn folder to easily find it).

ya I had avg detect it as a Trojan also. It was ok weeks ago but the latest avg update said it was a virus. I’ve jailbroken months ago but just had the file sitting on my harddrive.

Don’t worry about that because iTunes won’t automatically upgrade your firmware. It will give you a warning prompt before hand. Try the settings to change the automatic check for updates.

Loaded PDAnet but I don’t have enuff of a 3G signal to even attempt a connection. My signal sux during the day where I live and at night it gets bad.

I had upgraded from 2.0.2 ( JB ) to 2.1 – first with iphone FW and then through quickpwn with custom_restore version 2.1 without any hassle. smmoooooooth…. it was.Of course I had the TurboSIM unlocked. Pls look for hardware unlock first . If need help send in your request, I will send you the reference to get you further help.

need help plesae.i got a 3g iphone.i had it jailbreak-ed on 2.1.last night a buddy of mine tried to run an aplication and my phone junt bloked to favorites.i restarted and the phone just stocked on the white scerrn.no menu. funny thing is that i could answere the phone when somebody call me.i had in it a geavy sim for a romanian carrier. then if i saw that is nothing to do with i went home and tried to restore but itunes restored and updated to 2.2 firmware.right now my iphone is waiting to be activated.what can i do because i want to unlock-it later when a soft will be available.and i read about the problem with the baseband ..&shit if u update with itunes

I did this and it worked. the only downside to this now is that i cannot use my dialpad or make a call to any contacts……same happened to me after i loaded “Kate”…just deleted it and now working fine..no problems at all.

I jailbroke my phone last week. Yesterday my phone stopped working (the phone app). I could still call from contacts, but going into the phone it would become nonresponsive for a few seconds and dump me back at the home screen. A restore made it all work again, but now I don’t have iphonemodem. I’ll play with it again at some later point…

All the contacts, email, notes…everything was still there when I did mine. Had a different problem (described above), and did a restore, so all is well and I’m back at 2.2. Wish I hadn’t upgraded. Maybe that’s why I had some problems with the phone one week after JB???

NOTE: i had the same problem as other user had mentioned. i had a brand new iphone out of the box with the 2.1 software already loaded. When i started quickpwn i could not get past the detection of the .ipsw file. it only works if you upgraded to 2.1 from itunes. if your iphone and the 2.1 out of the box, you need to downloand the 2.1 ipsw file and simply point to it. i included the link where i got the file.

everything works great and all of my stuff is in tact

This thread is for firmware 2.1 only so make sure yours is version 2.1 (5F136) under General/About in your Iphone.
Once you jailbreak it, you can install all the apps from Itunes normally and installing any themes from using Cydia or Installer. Yes, you can still transfer songs via Itunes. Hope that helps.

I found the solution. I had to make sure that the QuikPwn file and the iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_RESTORE files were all in the same folder and I had to navigate to that folder when asked to select the iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_RESTORE file.

I don`t have to say that the phone is unusable (you can only make emergency call, and thats it, no menu or anything else, and you cannot activate it without the related sim in itunes…)

Ok. so my iphone is in 3g and it’s already jailbroken. I jailbroke it using a windows
laptop but then after that my “IPhone” section won’t open. So days after, I downloaded QuickPwn here in my Mac laptop and followed the instructions all all that till I get to the very last part. I’ve waited so long for it to load but then it took so long. So i tried exiting QuickPwn but it doesn’t want to. I disconnected my Iphone then tried to turn it on but it doesn’t want to? Try this: Launch iTunes. Then, hold down the HOME button on your iPhone while you plug in your USB cable into the computer–and keep it down. iTunes should recognize your iPhone. Restore, then jailbreak using QuickPwn.

I DONLOADED QUICKPWN 2.2.1…I THINK….AND IT GIVES ME AN OPTION TO BROWSE FOR THE RIGHT IPSW…AND I HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT THAT IS………….IN THE VERSION OF THE IPHONE IT SAYS: 2.1(5F136) AND AS YOU MAY HAVE GUESSED I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT MEANS……… MY CONCLUSION IS: DO I HAVE TO DOWNLOAD FIRMWARE 2.1??? OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT??

Do you mean iPhone 3G? If you are already on a carrier, and just want a jailbreak, just use QuickPwn 2.2.5 to jailbreak 2.2.1.

Try doing a manual hard reset and that should work…hold down home and sleep/wake.

Just a little question,

Jailbreak went through flawlessly. But when i click on installer it pops up but doesnt load and just closes. Cydia works, but some of the apps i downloaded just close.

I have seen a lot of emails here concerning not getting a network after jailbreaking using pawnage on the windows side. Also reading a lot of email abut sound issues with the I phone .
Well I had the same problem (no sound and no clicks or camera shutter sound and only some sounds when ear buds were in ) and it was really bugging me so I reset my phone to factory settings and no fix phoned apple no fix set a date to go to apple store thinking it was a hardware issue walking in to the store and a guy in a orange shirt listens to my story and the first thing he says is turn your mute button off lol fixed the problem.
Now I have no jailbreak phone can’t use my most fav app pda I tried 5 times on the mac side going through all the steps always getting an error never being able to open Itunes in dfu mode .So I went to the windows side that was easy got it the first time but no network,tried reseting network setting ,tried 4 or 5 times ever time jailbreak was no problem but no network .hmmm so I went back over to my mac side with my jailbroken I phone with no network went through pwnage and when it came to the part where it says “is your phone jailebroken does it have a pineapple” I clicked yes and bingo I tunes let me install the firmware and I solved the network issue works great hope this helps some people

Except this time when it was asking for me to hold the home button down and then both I just ignored it and opened itunes real fast! Itunes recognized it and let me restore. The it was like a new iphone with no music or video on it so I jailbroke it! Worked in seconds!!! Now I am going to add my applications and music/video!!! Has happened to me a few times, all i do is unplug the phone from the USB cable and it kicks it back in to life ?

If I purchased a new sealed iPhone does anybody know what firmware version it’s now shipped with? In other words would I be able to do jailbreak a brand new handset with this method? Also once jailbroken would I be able to connect it with iTunes (without downloading any updates obviously) and put any official apps and games on there too?

hey people if you think that your phone is a 3g because on the back it doesn't say 3gs then your wrong. Its a 3gs. If you have a compass icon on your iphone screen then its a 3gs 3g doesn't have one. Apple I guess screwed up and put on the wrong backing. That is why ur having problems restoring the firmware in itunes. So download the 3gs firmware. Hope it helps all of you that is going crazy all day and night.
