Supplies Still Holding Apple Back From Keeping Up With iPhone 5 Demand

Today marks the third-week that the iPhone 5 has been selling on the market. Availability of the phone is hard to find these days, with Apple’s online website indicating estimated shipping dates three-to-four weeks from today. The issues aren’t directly related to the rate of production, rather the heap of supplies made available for Foxconn to produce a sufficient amount of iPhone 5s. If you’re looking to grab the iPhone 5 quickly, best chances are to check your local Apple Store or one of the big-three carriers.

Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, known for Apple-related sale predictions, has recently knocked 2.2 million units off his September iPhone sales forecast. Munster’s 27.2 million prediction is now 25 million due to “extremely limited” constraints on iPhone 5 supplies. Apple will announce their Q4 sale numbers on October 25th at 2:00 PM Pacific time.

The Piper Jaffray team analyzed nearly 100 U.S. Apple stores and finally established major concern over iPhone 5 supply. Munster does predict though that supplies won’t be an issue come the December quarter.

“While the supply issues for the iPhone 5 since launch are concerning in terms of the company’s ability to fully meet demand in December, we are staying with our 49 million unit estimate for the holiday quarter.”

How has your personal experience been with iPhone 5 inventory? If you were able to walk into an Apple or carrier store and grab an iPhone 5, make sure to drop a comment below.

ordered online on sept 15th, still waiting, says oct 11th-17th…wtf this is taking too long

  • Anthony ?

Unlocked still aren’t available in Canadian stores, although they seem to have enough stock of carrier-locked units. Ordered online on the 22nd and it’s estimated to deliver the last week of October, so 35+ days when you factor in shipping time.

Very annoyed that they aren’t selling unlocked in retail stores this year, forcing people to order online and wait a month is dumb.

  • RyanStOnge

Crazy, especially being you ordered yours the second day of pre-orders.

I had to return mine due to a screen issue. Still waiting on its replacement although its in the mail. I wonder if the high number of returns I’ve been reading about have hurt supplies?

  • prat

same here. gotta wait till goddamn nov for me.

  • Fez

I cant find an iphone anywhere in Calgary

Sold my unlocked iPhone 4 on Wednesday and was able to preorder a white 32GB at BestBuy that same day right before the Sept 21 official launch. It was there waiting for me on Friday, which was pretty exciting! Mine’s locked to Telus though.

  • RyanStOnge

That’s very well possible. I’ve heard a lot of people returning due to the scuffs alone. Did your screen have an air bubble in it? I have heard reports of that too.

  • RyanStOnge

I know, sort of screws over the loyal users willing to pay full price.

Yea well consider yourself lucky. Maybe then all these issues (scuffgate, light leak gate etc.) will have been resolved. I went to the Apple store today to replace my 64GB white iphone 5 and got home and still have the same issue (light bleed) with the replacement phone. Was told by the Apple flunky that it’s a one time replacement! So much for a ONE YEAR WARRANTY! After this debacle and Apple’s refusal to stand behind their product this will be the LAST iPhone I ever own!

My roommate & I are still waiting for two black 32GB iPhone pre-orders from Bell (Toronto). Ordered the day they went on sale, went over to pick them up on the 21st and they said they were only able to partially fill pre-orders. Still waiting. My roommate is a new contact and my contract is almost up with Bell & my 3GS battery is nearly dead, I get 10 – 15 minutes out of it then have to recharge.

I called Blacks Photography in STC on Wednesday 26-SEP-2012. The manager picked up and had a white 32GB iPhone 5 shipped from another store to hers for me. She emailed me advising it would arrive on Friday 28-SEP-2012. On my way to STC on that Friday, she called me letting me know it arrived. I walked out with the phone and an extra $75 in my pocket after all the discounts. Without all the discounts and just hardware discounts my final price was $129. I was expecting to have paid 279 and maybe only get a free sim. Theres actually many more great deals I recieved but this post is getting long.

Finally on the Saturday following the launch, I went to the Koodo kiosk in Fairview mall at about noon or so. They had a white 16GB iPhone 5 but I needed 32GB. I could have had one a week earlier. As you can tell, I didn’t have much trouble. The iPhone 4 was way tougher for me to obtain.

Walked into a Telus store in Calgary the other day to check on availability and it turned out they had 10 – 32GB black iphone 5’s just arrive. You just have to call and visit around.
