Case Review: iSkin Solo FX for iPhone 3G/3GS

Today I have a review of the iSkin Solo FX. The Solo FX is a form-fitting case for your iPhone 3G/3GS that provides durable protection and a little style to go with it.

Solo FX by iSkin

The Solo FX is an upgrade from iSkin’s Solo line up. The primary difference between the two are that the Solo FX adds embossed designer patterns to go along with the its high-gloss color finish.

The Solo FX is a fairly thick silicone case and does encompass the back and sides of the device completely. This works well against impacts and scratches that usually occur on the back and sides of iPhones. The Solo FX is also hot/cold resistant and is odor-free, both of which are welcomed features, especially the odor-free aspect because as many of you likely know, some silicone cases have that funny-siliconey smell even when they are brand new!

The silicone shell covers the volume rocker and sleep/wake button, but still allows full access to them. You also get clear access to the headphone jack, silent switch, camera, dock connector, and mic/speaker.

For the front of the case, the Solo FX includes a mirror film that is applied directly to the screen of the iPhone 3G/3GS. The mirror film is touch compatible, so you can still use the iPhone touchscreen normally. The film provides protection against scratches and dust mostly and is also quite neat because the film is reflective. However, the reflection feature of the film is only truly useful when the iPhone screen is asleep or off. Ofcourse, this is an optional add on and does not need to be applied if you choose not to.

Overall, the Solo FX provides adequate, durable protection for your iPhone and also throws in a little style with the colors and embossed patterns. I give it a solid 4/5.

I have the translucent blue with me today and I will give it away to someone that posts a meaningful comment below about the case!

Winner chosen at random; contest ends June 28, 2009 at 11:59PM.

The Solo FX is available from the iSkin online store in five different translucent colors (Blue, Green, Red, Orange, Purple) for $32.99.

Contests open to Canada residents only.

Always good to see someone promoting a good Canadian product!

The skin looks great, and it looks like it would repel lint rather than collect it. Like other silicone skins.

As for the mirror screen protector, unless it is different from the three pack I purcased on eBay, I wouldn’t find it useful. It worked good indoors, other than cutting back on brightness and contrast, but when I went outside into the sunlight it became almost impossible to see.

I flipp my hat into the ring for a chance at winning.

I just recently acquired my husbands 3G as he has purchased the 3GS. Yes, he always gets the new, I get the hand me downs. Don’t give him the new blue FX silicone case. I should be the Lucky winner as I think it’s a great idea to have the product to protect my appreciated used phone from Bud. I want this phone well protected and it sounds like a great product to me. Besides, he’d be awfully jealous if I won it.

I’m not really a fan, because the case looks like it provides minimal protection to the front of the iPhone. There are so many silicone cases out there now, the bar has been raised significantly, and with no included headphone or dock protector, this case doesn’t really stand out IMO.

After reading this post, I went to my local Rogers Plus store located inside the Rogers Centre. I asked the sales person to show me the Solo FX and noticed they only had the red and green in stock.

He allowed me to carefully take it out of the box and I noticed many of the points in this post were very accurate. There was no silicony smell, there is a nice embossed pattern on the rear side of the skin.

I asked them to allow me to place it on the iPhone 3G model that was on display and they too were curious as to how it would fit. After a few minutes, it changed the overall look to have the red skin on the iphone.
It felt good on my hands and I did not feel that the skin was preventing me from enjoying any of the features of the phone.

Carefully we also looked inside and noticed that the manufacturer had neatly included the protective screen film.

After holding the iPhone with the red iskin Solo FX, I was sold!
As of yet I have not been able to upgrade to the 3GS because most of the Rogers stores are sold out, but I plan on buying the blue version of the Solo FX when this store finally gets in stock.

Thank you for taking the photos you posted, for me the blue skin is my colour of choice.

Well, I am not a fan of any of these skins. From my eyes, it destroys the whole style of iPhone Apple spent tons of time designed. But that doesn’t mean I don’t use them to protect my iPhone. I do actually but I choose invisible skins instead. This site also has a review of this type but referred to a store that sells a lot more expensive. I got mine only $7, and it totally blew my away. It’s just like the name said, totally invisible.

As I have gone through MANY cases (power-extenders, silicone, claimed durability, polymer/polycarbonate-schmarbonate…etc.), the only thing that I really need, is SIMPLICITY. This iSkin Solo FX epitomizes just that! Ideally its durable, flexible and low profile; which fits MY style…

As a traveling DJ/businessman, I guarantee at least a 10-second stare and many inquiries to follow in which I will confidently advertise!!!

I bought this case 6 months ago, and it's been amazing. The only complaint I have is that if you don't put the screen protector on just right, the sides of the case will peel it up once in a while, but that's mostly my incompetence.
In terms of durability, it is great. My iphone has actually fell out of my pocket while I was running across the street, landed on the cement, and then I proceeded to kick it and bounce it a couple of more times across the cement (crap!), not a scratch! Also not a scratch when it slipped out of my purse, bounced off the frame of my truck and then landed on the cement. The silicon doesn't stretch out and loosen either. I am extremely happy with this case.
