Belkin Developing ‘Soundplay Connect’ Adapter, Adding AirPlay 2 to Standard Speakers

Mobile accessory company Belkin appears to be developing a new ‘Soundform Connect’ adapter that can be attached to standard speakers to give them AirPlay 2 connectivity.

An FCC filing was discovered by 9to5Mac‘s Janko Roettgers who shared the information via Twitter. Based on the filing, the Soundform Connect adapter will be used to connect to a standard speaker by using either a 3.5mm jack or by Optical Digital Audio. The adapter itself will be powered by a USB-C cable.

Once connected to a speaker, an iPhone, iPad, or Mac device can use the speaker to stream audio as it will be detected as an AirPlay 2 speaker. Seeing as though the speaker will be treated as an AirPlay 2 device, users can stream audio to multiple devices at once. Apple introduced AirPlay 2 and enabled users to connect multiple speakers such as the HomePod, Apple TV, and other third-party smart speakers such as Sonos.

The Soundform Connect’s filing suggests the adapter will feature HomeKit capabilities so you can assign the attached speakers a designated room. For instance, if the speakers are placed in your living room, you may specifically as Siri to play a song from your living room via voice command or from the Home app.

According to Roettgers’ findings, the Soundform Connect will be priced at €95.73, which is roughly $146 CAD. There’s been no indication of when to expect the adapter to release. Belkin has made no official announcement on the product.
