Former MobileMe Customers Receive Free iCloud Storage Extension Until Late 2013

When MobileMe users were asked to transfer over to iCloud over this past year they were provided with complimentary storage provided by Apple. The courtesy storage was meant to be downgraded at the end of September to 5 GB, but Apple has just provided the users with an extension until September 30th, 2013.  This extension applies to anyone who transitioned to iCloud between October 12th, 2011 and August 1st, 2012.

The amount of storage you’re provided with depends on the amount you purchased with MobileMe. Follow the instructions to find out how much storage you have: (via Apple)

  • On an iOS device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Account.
  • On a Mac: Go to System Preferences > iCloud, then click Manage followed by View Account.
  • On a PC: Open the iCloud Control Panel for Windows, then click Manage followed by View Account.

If you already paid to extend your iCloud storage you will not be granted a refund; the expansion will last until September 30th, 2013. Regardless, this was a very classy move by Apple. I would never deny a freebie!

Are you one of those users who received an extension? Let us know.

Update 1: Here’s the email Apple has sent former MobileMe customers:

Dear Scott ______,
When you moved your MobileMe account to iCloud, we provided you with a complimentary storage upgrade beyond the standard 5GB that comes with an iCloud account to help you with the transition. Originally, this storage upgrade was set to expire on September 30, 2012.
As a thank you to our former MobileMe members, we will continue to provide you with this complimentary storage upgrade at no charge, for an additional year, until September 30, 2013. No action is required on your part. For complete details, please read this article.
Thank you again for using iCloud,
iCloud Team
