Apple’s current Apple TV lineup in Canada is unusually simple. There are only two Apple TV 4K configurations: a 64GB Wi-Fi model at $279 and a 128GB model with Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread support at $349. Both use the same A15 Bionic chip and deliver the same core streaming experience, so the decision comes down to whether the extra storage, wired networking and smart home hardware are worth another $70.

Current Apple TV prices in Canada
Apple currently sells two versions of Apple TV 4K in Canada. Both are third-generation models with the A15 Bionic chip and support 4K video, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos.
| Model | Price (CAD) | Storage | Ethernet | Thread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi | $279 | 64GB | No | No |
| Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet | $349 | 128GB | Yes | Yes |
The $70 price difference buys more than storage. The 128GB model also adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking support, which makes it the more flexible version for a permanent home theatre or smart home setup.
Which Apple TV 4K should you buy?
Apple TV 4K 64GB Wi-Fi: $279
Best for: Streaming, strong home Wi-Fi and buyers who want the lowest-cost Apple TV 4K
Skip if: You want Ethernet, Thread support or expect to install lots of games and apps
Apple TV 4K 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet: $349
Best for: Most buyers, wired home theatres, smart homes and anyone planning to keep the box for years
Skip if: You only need streaming apps and the extra $70 matters more than Ethernet or Thread
64GB vs 128GB: how much Apple TV storage do you need?
Streaming video does not require much local storage because services such as Apple TV, Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video primarily stream content over the internet. For a basic streaming box, 64GB is therefore enough for many households.
Storage becomes more relevant if you install a large number of apps or games through the App Store and Apple Arcade. The 128GB model doubles the available capacity and costs only $70 more.
The important point is that storage is not the only difference. Buying 128GB also gives you Ethernet and Thread support, so the upgrade is easier to justify than a storage-only increase.
Wi-Fi vs Ethernet: does wired networking matter?
The 64GB Apple TV 4K connects over Wi-Fi 6. The 128GB model adds Gigabit Ethernet while retaining the same Wi-Fi capability.
For most streaming, a strong Wi-Fi connection is enough. If your router or mesh node is close to the television and 4K video streams reliably, Ethernet will not dramatically improve picture quality.
Wired networking becomes more useful when the Apple TV is in a fixed home theatre, Wi-Fi is congested or unreliable, or you simply want one less wireless device competing for airtime. Ethernet also removes another variable when troubleshooting buffering or connection problems.
For a permanent living-room setup with an Ethernet jack nearby, I would spend the extra $70 and wire it.
Thread support and the smart home difference
The 128GB Apple TV 4K includes Thread networking technology. The 64GB Wi-Fi model does not.
Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology used by compatible smart home accessories and works alongside standards such as Matter. If you are building an Apple Home setup with Thread accessories, the 128GB Apple TV is the version to buy.
This is one reason I would recommend the $349 model even to buyers who do not care about having 128GB of storage. Smart home hardware tends to stay in place for years, and the additional networking support gives the box a broader role than simply streaming television.
Apple TV 4K vs built-in smart TV apps
Modern televisions already include apps for major streaming services, so an Apple TV 4K is not required simply to watch Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or Apple’s own streaming service.
The argument for Apple TV 4K is the interface and ecosystem. It gives you a consistent tvOS experience regardless of the television brand, ties into your Apple Account and Photos library, works with AirPlay, supports FaceTime on the TV with compatible devices, and can serve as an Apple Home hub. Apple also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Atmos on the current hardware.
It can also extend the useful life of an older television whose built-in apps have become slow or stopped receiving updates. In that situation, replacing a streaming box is considerably cheaper than replacing an otherwise good TV.
Is Apple TV 4K good for gaming?
The A15 Bionic chip gives Apple TV 4K enough performance for Apple Arcade and other tvOS games. Both models use the same processor, so buying the 128GB version does not make games run faster.
The benefit of the larger model is storage. Games can consume far more space than streaming apps, making 128GB the more practical choice if gaming will be a meaningful part of how you use the device.
Apple TV also supports compatible wireless game controllers. It should not be viewed as a replacement for a PlayStation, Xbox or gaming PC, but it works well for casual gaming and Apple Arcade.
Apple TV 4K as an Apple Home hub
Apple TV 4K can act as a smart home hub, allowing compatible accessories to be controlled and automated through Apple’s Home platform even when you are away from home. Apple specifically lists Apple TV 4K as a hub for connecting and controlling smart home accessories.
If smart home use is part of the purchase, the 128GB version is the stronger option because of Thread support. That provides better compatibility with Thread-based accessories and gives the Apple TV a role beyond entertainment.
The box can sit connected to power and your home network permanently, which makes a television location a natural place for a smart home hub. If you are adding speakers to the same setup, our best HomePod to buy in Canada guide covers Apple’s smart speakers.
Siri Remote: what comes in the box?
Both Apple TV 4K versions include Apple’s third-generation Siri Remote. It uses a touch-enabled clickpad, includes dedicated power, volume, mute and Siri controls, and charges over USB-C.
Apple says the remote’s rechargeable battery can last for months under typical daily use. A USB-C charging cable and HDMI cable are not included, so factor those into the purchase if you do not already have suitable cables.
The Siri Remote can also control compatible TVs and receivers over HDMI-CEC or infrared, which can reduce how often you need the television’s original remote.
Should you buy a refurbished Apple TV?
Apple’s Canadian Certified Refurbished store sometimes carries both Apple TV 4K configurations. When we checked on September 30, 2026, Apple listed the refurbished 64GB third-generation Apple TV 4K for $239 CAD, down from $279, and the refurbished 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model for $289 CAD, down from $349.
The 128GB refurbished model is particularly attractive because it puts the higher-end version close to the $279 price of a new 64GB unit while retaining Ethernet, Thread and twice the storage.
Refurbished inventory is limited and changes regularly, so treat these as prices to check rather than guaranteed availability. Apple Certified Refurbished products include Apple’s one-year limited warranty and can be covered by AppleCare.
Should you buy Apple TV 4K now or wait?
The current third-generation Apple TV 4K dates back to 2022, making it older than many products elsewhere in Apple’s lineup. Apple has not announced a replacement, so there is no confirmed new model or release date to plan around.
If you need a streaming box now, the current model remains capable of 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, Apple Home integration and Apple Arcade. The hardware still covers the main reasons to buy an Apple TV.
If your current streaming setup already works well, waiting is also reasonable simply because the existing hardware has been on sale for several years. I would not delay a needed purchase based on rumours or an assumed launch date, but I would check retailer and refurbished pricing before paying full Apple.ca pricing.
How we choose the best Apple TV
We compare the Apple TV models Apple currently sells in Canada using Canadian pricing, storage, networking, smart home support, video and audio capabilities and the type of setup each configuration is designed to serve.
Our recommendations focus on what buyers actually gain from spending more. Because both current Apple TV 4K models use the same processor and provide the same core streaming quality, Ethernet, Thread and storage carry more weight than raw performance in our comparison.
Prices and refurbished inventory can change. We update this guide when Apple changes its Canadian Apple TV lineup, pricing or major features.

Yes if you mainly stream video and have reliable Wi-Fi. Streaming apps use relatively little local storage, so 64GB is adequate for a straightforward entertainment setup.
