[Update] Greyhound Driver Caught Using iPhone While Driving

Update 1: Davide Sabine, who shot and uploaded the video just received a message from YouTube about his upload:

YouTube has sent a message to me indicating they’ve received a complaint and they’re considering taking the video offline. This video has been the subject of many (thousands by now) news broadcasts in Alberta, Ontario, Indiana, (that I know of). Is this a matter of personal privacy? Or a matter of public interest?

Visit Google news and type “greyhound video”.

Greyhound is investigating after one of its drivers was caught on video playing with his iPhone. In the video below, you can clearly see the employee fiddling with his iPhone while operating the bus–clearly a dangerous situation.

The passenger who recorded this video tried unsuccessfully to relay her concerns to Greyhound, after the trip was over (as described in the YouTube video description). The staff at the station dismissed what she had to say. Since there was no legitimate response to her claims, she posted the video up on YouTube:

I recorded just a few minutes but I watched this for at least 10 minutes before getting my camera ready. Prior to that I was asleep so I don’t know how long or how often the driver was messing with his phone throughout the trip. I became very anxious a few times while on single-lane highway but I started the video only after we hit the 4-lane divided highway just south of Fort McMurray. In the time that I observed him he read txt messages, flipped through photos, flipped through the settings and configuration of his camera, and snapped a dozen or so pictures of the sunrise out the East window — gently swerving over the lines the entire time.

Unbelievable. I wouldn’t want to be on that bus, knowing my driver could be distracted with his iPhone. Laws in BC already ban the usage of cellphones during driving.

Have you ever witnessed a bus driver using their cellphone while driving? It’s definitely a scary situation since so many lives are at stake.

I make the bus ride from Fort Mac to Edmonton and back every weekend. Normally I sleep.
Thanks. No more rest for me.

It’s hard to be unconcerned, but with such a mundane, tedious job, who can really blame a person foe being on their phone once in a while, but for spending SO much time on his phone there’s really no excuse.

The person that recorded the vid deserves a HUGE thanks! This poor behavior by paid drivers won’t stop until enough of them are caught in the act.

Not surprising Greyhound ignored it. Says a lot about the safety of their organization as a whole.

didnt the law already pass in alberta, no cell phones while driving? Im sure it’s in effect right now, but they aren’t giving out tickets in this ‘grace’ period.

either way, you shouldn’t use your phone while driving. Even handsfree and bluebooth is questionable. Maybe some drivers can drive and use the bluebooth but that means we HAVE too let all other drivers use bluebooth and that just isn’t worth the rest.

What app is he using there, it’s one thing to check messages, it’s something to be more concerned about if he’s facebooking or playing angry birds.

Well, for starters he can be awake to spot if his driver is on his cellphone, and call him/her out if it’s happening. It seems many people relax or sleep on this long trip, so it’d be easy to think the driver above wouldn’t get ‘caught’. Too bad this video is now viral.

Never mentioned I was looking to solve anything by my inability to sleep.

I was mostly commenting on the fact that it will be harder to trust in my safety after seeing that a driver could be this careless while being responsible for the lives of a full bus of people.

Looks like Greyhound hasn’t actually ignored it.

“greyhound told CTV News that using a smartphone while driving is a breach of policy and something the company takes seriously”

Nevermind. I just read the notes that are posted with the video. I’m not gonna defend Greyhound!

If you’re driving 50+ people, I don’t care how tedious the job is, get off the phone, a visual device like a smartphone is even worse than talking on the phone and its well established how dangerous thtis .
