Leaked MacBook Pro Box Hints FaceTime HD Coming to the iPhone 5?

Here’s your tip of the day: don’t buy a Macbook today. Why? Because new ones are coming tomorrow, and they will include Intel’s latest Light Peak technology, dubbed Thunderbolt by Apple. Leaked images of the new MacBook Pro’s box have revealed the feature “Built-in FaceTime HD camera”, and have been confirmed to be legitimate according to MacRumors.

This appears to be an evolution of FaceTime, and the next iPhone 5 could indeed sport FaceTime HD if a higher resolution camera is included. Most newer MacBooks have a higher 1280×1024 (1.3MP) resolution iSight camera, which hasn’t been highly publicized. This would enable HD-ready FaceTime. Current iPhone 4 and iPod touch units sport front facing cameras with VGA resolution of 640×480.

More FaceTime HD evidence also has been revealed from these new MacBook Pros. 9to5Mac reports FaceTime Version 1.0 ships with the new MBPs, whereas currently we are all using FaceTime Version 0.9.

Will we expect FaceTime HD to debut this summer for the iPhone? It could also debut with the iPad 2, which is slated for a March 2nd announcement. It would make sense, since VGA-resolution FaceTime on the iPad’s large screen would not look very clear at all.

Below is a leaked picture of the 13″ MacBook Pro–note the Thunderbolt port:

What do you think? FaceTime HD in the next iPhone a real possibility?

Also, from what I have seen of facetime its been quite choppy. Is increasing the resolution really a good idea?
