Rogers and Fido

Both Rogers and Fido will be releasing the iPhone 3GS on Friday June 19, 2009. That means you have a little over a week to get all of your launch stuff ready and get to your local Rogers or Fido store!

rogers_logofido

I anticipate lines will be much smaller this year mostly because everyone who bought on iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008 will have to wait until atleast July 11, 2009 to upgrade again, unless Rogers and Fido pull a fast one and change that policy. However, if you did not get an iPhone 3G last year and are eligible to upgrade or are a totally new customer to Rogers/Fido, then you will be able to get the iPhone 3G “S” without a hitch. In any case, you can bet stock will be short, so get there fast and get there early!

Pricing

The iPhone 3G “S” is coming in a few different flavors but will keep the existing 3 year contract pricing of $199/$299 so long as you have a voice plan that is $30.01 or higher, regardless of any data plan option (you don’t even need to buy a data plan to get the iPhone 3G “S”). The prices below will all reflect the requirement of a voice plan that is $30.01 or higher. If your voice plan is $30.00 or less, add $50 to the price.

With either Rogers or Fido, you will need to sign up on a 3-year contract to be eligible for the iPhone 3G “S” and choose an available voice or voice and data plan. You can check out the available Rogers plans for June 2009 here.

New Rogers/Fido Customers

Once you have your 3 year contract plan chosen and a voice plan that is atleast $30.01 or higher, check out the list below for prices for NEW customers:

  • 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $199
  • 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299

Current Rogers/Fido customers

If you are a current Rogers/Fido customer, most of you iPhone 3G owners will have to wait until atleast July 11, 2009 or later to upgrade, which will mark your one year into your contract. However, if you did not buy the iPhone 3G at all or are eligible to upgrade, then you can get the iPhone 3G “S”.

Current Rogers/Fido customers more than one year but less than two years into contract

If you are an existing customer and are going to be more than one year but less than two years into your contract by the time the iPhone 3G “S” is released, then your pricing may look something like this:

  • 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or more
  • 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $399 or more

The reason you pay $100 more is because you are only one year or less than two years into your contract term and your accumulated discounts are not high enough to enable promotional pricing.

Current Rogers/Fido customers two or more years into contract

If you are an existing customer and are going to be two or more years into your contract by the time the iPhone 3G “S” is released, then your pricing will look something like this:

  • 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $199 or less
  • 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or less

Is it worth it?

If you watched the WWDC keynote, the iPhone 3G “S” is mostly made up of minor upgrades such as a 3.0 MP camera that now includes video recording and autofocus. For more details about the specifications, check out our Apple WWDC roundup.

Considering the upgrades (partial feature list here and at Apple here) to the iPhone 3G “S” over the existing iPhone 3G, will you be updating your iPhone to the 3G “S”?

That’s the thing, though. I think last time I was in Best Buy, it didn’t show any smartphones. I think that’s why I called Rogers for that second upgrade quote. Now I see why it wasn’t showing up in Best Buy’s system. I guess I’ll just try again once the 3G S comes out and go from there. If Rogers is saying it’s an issue with their deal with Apple, maybe I’ll have to call up Apple and see from there. Maybe if I complain enough…lol

    From Keith McArthur’s Twitter:

There will be a no-contract price for customers who want to upgrade before they’re eligible for a subsidy.

I just spoke with someone at a Rogers Wireless retail store, in Victoria. He said they are not allowed to do pre-orders. He did say, that he expects to have the new iPhone 3G S on launch, although he hasn;t heard that “officially”.

    thought this was interesting reading:

Will Fido carry all the new device models?
Yes Fido will be the Canadian Wireless Service Provider to carry all the new devices.

Are they doing that thing again where they charge you $50 more for the iPhone if your voice plan is under $30?

I am wondering if you can buy these outright and do prepaid or something

I am currently 18 and the age of magority in BC is 19.. (so i use telus pay as you go)

So I cannot sign a 3 year deal and noone I know is willing to help me…

Id pay like 699 for the 32gb

any details on an “outright” purchase?

    @Chase:
That shouldn’t make a difference :S. I’m live in Ontario where the AOM is 19 as well but I’ve had a phone in my name since I was 18. You’re considered financially responsible as an adult at that point. You can get a credit card at 18 anywhere in Canada. Give Rogers a call and re-check their policies.

Maybe through Rogers directly, but very likely that reps at the store level will sell an iPhone outright. It is of no benefit to them.

Cycorder and Qik are jailbreak solution to record video with iphone 3g. The jailbreak process make the phone slower and those solution doesn’t provide 30fps, Vga quality. I don’t think they provide editing and sharing tool either (qik is sharing, but the quality is much better with cycorder wich make the process of getting the movie out of the phone difficult).

    I hope this help.

I think apple give just the right amount of new feature to make everyone want that phone…

    Thanks.

    Is this possible?

Go into a US apple store buy the iphone for $99 and get it unlocked to work with Fido here in Canada?

I don’t want to sign 3 year contracts or a data plan because I’m usually in areas with free wireless like school.

$99 is a contract price. So the answer to your question is no.
