Telus Testing GSM: iPhone Cometh?

TELUS customers rejoice! The iPhone cometh!

The pictures below have just recently began to show up clearly indicating the carrier name “TELUS” and the numbers “302880″ and “302860″ in the carrier selection screen of iPhone’s all over Canada. These designations seem to indicate that TELUS is currently testing their GSM network. Could this mean TELUS is finally going to launch their GSM network? I hope so!

As we all know, one of the major advantages of a TELUS GSM network is the purest form of competition for our “friend” Rogers Wireless. Once launched, TELUS could potentially drive down the prices of plans for both itself and Rogers/Fido and have better offers than Rogers/Fido. I very much enjoy the prospect of that, but we shall see if it is true soon enough.

For the last while, rumors that TELUS will be launching their GSM network in Canada in Fall 2010 have been popping up everywhere, but we all know it will likely be later as these things are never on time. But what does this mean for you right now? Well, not alot. Rogers/Fido are the only iPhone carriers in Canada and you have your iPhone locked to Rogers/Fido (in most cases) but can be unlocked. This potentially means that you could take your Rogers or Fido iPhone and buy a TELUS plan with a TELUS SIM card.

Or better yet, the iPhone comes to TELUS!

We all know Apple makes mega cash from the sale of their hardware, especially iPhones which is in the 20,000,000+ range of sales right now. I would predict that if TELUS goes GSM, Jesus Jobs and the crew at Apple would immediately fire off iPhones to TELUS. More hardware sales  = more revenue = Apple wins.

What do you guys think?

Will TELUS offer cheaper plans? Will you switch? Will you break your Rogers/Fido contract?

Will TELUS get the iPhone 4G? 5G? With included shaver?*

Sound off below!

*Obviously it’s not coming with a shaver

I highly doubt that Telus will get the iPhone. Rogers probably signed a contact for it and I highly doubt they will give that up. Look at AT&T in the states. They will never give it up if possible. Both companies will pay apple whatever they ask to keep the phone. It’s the main phone on the carrier. They make the most off of the data plans.

I could see Telus knocking down the price, but they won’t get the iPhone.

I’d love for more GSM competition but with regards to Apple selling iPhones through Telus, I don’t think we’d see that too soon. Doesn’t Apple get locked in with the carrier for a certain number of years? In other words they would have to stay exclusive to Rogers until the Apple’s contract with them expires.

Not coming with a shaver? I’m sticking with Fido then!

in France they did went to court to say it was unfair that only one get to sale a phone like iPhone and make profit, and they won! Now any phone company in France can carry the iPhone, and the prices went down (29 euros the iPhone, plans at 30$ with unlimited data and sms/mms)

The iPhone was exclusive to Rogers and Fido? I thought the only reason they got it was because they were the only ones that could support it…

Exactly. These things are never set in stone, it would change the mobile landscape if the iPhone was being sold by either Telus or Bell.

Crossing fingers and toes…..not that I particularly like Telus but Rogers needs some competition at their heels.

TELUS Mobility has definite plans to release their HSPA network next year. You can call their client care and they will confirm for you. Though they are not sure about the iPhone being sold by their company, by using yellowsn0w this will not be a problem.

The previous news that TELUS is testing out their GSM coverage sounds true. If you try to look for another carrier around the Burnaby area I won’t be surprised. Last time I checked we ALL support that iPhone … not the carrier (ie. Rogers).

I had Telus in the beginning of the Cell phone days, prob 4 years before switching to Robbers for the iPhone 1G back in 07 for GSM. I believe Telus would switch over but I dont think there gonna be done that in 2010, late 2010 maybe… As for selling, they might. That is if Robbers didnt sign a contract to strictly allow them only to sell the iPhone? But reading some of the comments, they could fight for it. Im not sure if Telus selling the iPhone would change a great price in plans, its only 2 carriers carrying it. One may have a better deal then the other but still doesn’t mean its gonna be cheap. We need more carriers in Canada to see a big difference. If u want the iPhone so bad, im sure u will pay what ever price from both carriers if Telus were to sell the iPhone.
I don’t think well see anything happen for a while though… Just talk right now ;)

I think both Telus and Bell are rushing to test and get their network up. I doubt nationwide release until late next year but I would bet they have Vancouver and area up and running for the Olympics. There is no way they are going to want to hand all that roaming money over to Rogers with all those international phones coming in during the Olympics!

TELUS is NOT getting a GSM network. They are getting HSPA. And how does Cliff know the details of Roger’s exclusivity contract with Apple? I think it would be unfair to claim that Rogers has exclusivity of the iPhone when you look at the majority of similar contracts only lasting weeks/months for most carriers.

I think people are somewhat missing the point of what a carrier capable of carrying the iPhone would offer… The biggest advantage in my opinion is for current customers. Right now, if you say want the iPhone 3G S and Rogers refuses to sell it to you, you are SOL. With another carrier, you suddenly have much more power, and could threaten to leave and unlock your phone or buy a new one from the other. Right now, you can’t really hold Rogers’ feet to the fire because where else will you get an iPhone? The Palm Pre is the only thing remotely similar.
