Rogers/Fido Name Display Does Not Work With iPhone?
Recently Rogers and Fido both updated their various iPhone related value packs to include Name Display along side the Caller Display feature. This was primarily due to the release of iPhone OS 3.1, which, among other updates, brought with it the ability to use Name Display on the iPhone…or did it?
After various personal testing and many emails from concerned readers, I have concluded that Name Display on Rogers/Fido is either broken or that 3.1 did not really bring about Name Display for the iPhone. At the same time, I have had some readers email me with success. In other words, Name Display with the iPhone/Rogers/Fido seems to be a 50/50 hit.
So, community, we need your help in determining what causes Name Display to both work and not work.
To summarize, Caller Display displays an incoming caller’s phone number while Name Display shows that caller’s name that they have on their account. This will occur even if the person who is calling is not in your iPhone contact list. If the person blocks their outgoing name, then you will not see a name.

The only time caller name is displayed is if the person is in the contacts (substituted by the phone).

I'm actually replying to my own post….but I found the solution!!!!
I called Rogers and they said it was already on my account from when
all the accounts were automatically updated a couple weeks ago to
include Name Display.
I told them it didn't work for me, so they removed my iPhone Visual
Voicemail pack from my account and re-added it. They told me to then
restart my phone in a few minutes. After I restarted the phone, Name
Display started working when I tested it by calling from a coworkers
cell phone!!!

What may be throwing you guys off is that Name Display only works for the call as it is ringing, but when you view your call history you will simply see the phone number.
e.g. John Smith is calling me, he is not yet in my phone book, and my phone is ringing. I see J SMITH on the screen. I ignore the call. I then go to my Phone app and view the missed call, and it shows up in the list as (123) 456-7890.
It has been working way before 3.0 update but not always!!
its really bizarre. But yes I do remember getting name displays from time to time before the 3.0 update
with ROGERS and for the 3G model
Jailbreaking with pwnage tool will mess up how the phone operates and name display will be broken. Try it again without jailbreaking. Or try it with blackra1n instead. It will work fine then. This used to happen to me with quickpwn and ultrasn0w, but worked fine with quickpwn by itself. I could toggle the behaviour just by installing/removing ultrasn0w. Then 3.1.2 came ou and the problem appeared with pwnage tool alone. Musclenerd said he fixed this with the latest ultrasn0w, so hopefully he puts the fix in pwnage tool too. This was the 1-byte fix he tweeted about recently for ultrasn0w.

when I called fido to add name display, they told me they will activate it but won't work until the next billing cycle….maybe that's the problem people are having? Just have to wait for the next billing cycle

It was my understanding that the Name display would come from ALL Carriers. but I get only names from people associated with Rogers. I am also the same as a lot of people posted that I get the name and no number and in Recents I just get the number , no name.
People haven't explained as to how it is working for them. It would be nice to know if people got the Name and Number and also if they got other carriers.
hmm… maybe that's what the update from the 04.26 baseband to 05.11 was all about (besides subverting QuickPwn)… I've noticed not a single person with 04.26.08 in the comments has gotten Name Display to work.

Hmm, odd, I have a Rogers iPhone 3G with latest (3.1.2) firmware and I did notice that Name Display started working for me the first time a month or so ago, but when I tested it just now to post here its not actually working. I wonder if it was working after I upgraded and before I jailbroke?
It was definitely working, not just people from my address book, as people I didnt have in my contacts would have their name (in FULL CAPITALS – another way to be sure they arent in my contacts), even though the Recent Calls list would just show the number.
Can people start adding another line to their posts with Jailbroken? and if so what method they used, since there are people with identical versions where some work and some dont, and for me on the exact same phone it used to work and now doesnt. (Can existing posters edit their posts?)
Just to clarify, I jailbroke using blackra1n, since that was the only windows supported jailbreak for 3.1.2 – though I must stress that I'm not saying for sure if that was what broke it.

I actually noticed that name display would work only when I am in another call. If someone calls me while I am on another call, I will see that person's name all in CAPITALS; however, if I am not in a call when someone calls me, I will only see the number. The funny thing is this has been like this for quite a while, I noticed it back in July for the first time.
Currently, my 3G is jailbroken using Pwnage Tool and ultrasn0w.

I phoned Rogers and she tried to convince me it WAS working, because of Call Display, meaning people in my Contacts showed up. She transferred me to Tech support, but after a few minutes on Hold, I gave up.

I don't think jailbroken or NOT has anything to do with it.
I bet most (I'm not saying all) people who are reporting success aren't realizing the subtlety of address-book playing a big role.
I have already reported above that it didn't work on my jailbroken phone, I placed my sim in two different
1- v3.01 NOT jailbroken
2- v.3.1.2 NOT jailbroken
phones (and yes I do subscribe to the name display service) and in both cases Name Display did not work.
My test results along with Rogers Tech Sup insisting that it doesn't work convinces me that if it works at all this service is very flaky with Rogers.
I'd like to see a proof of the contrary.
