Fido to not receive new iPhone in 2009?

We have all heard the rumors about Fido possibly not receiving the new iPhone in Summer 2009. Within the past few months Rogers Wireless, who owns Fido, has turned Fido into a discount brand labeling them as the “new” Fido. They have received new plans, new signage, new everything and now compete amongst the likes of Koodo Mobile (Telus) and Solo Mobile (Bell Mobility).

Traditionally, Fido has not had very many smartphones or data devices. Over the last year, the three popular ones were the Samsung Jack , the iPhone 3G, and the Blackberry Pearl. Rogers on the other hand has received all of these phones plus atleast five other blackberries, an HP device and the new two new HTC devices coming in June.

Fido1

In November of 2008, we received word that Fido may not be selling the iPhone 3G at all in 2009 and shortly after that in March of 2009, we received word that the 16GB iPhone 3G was being discontinued at Fido.

Needless to say, it seems Fido is becoming more and more of a true discount carrier with less smartphones and more regular consumer devices, with a heavier focus on text message plans than data plans.

Well, the latest word about this, it seems that Apple has removed the “Fido” signage from their latest Canadian TV Ads labeled “Read” and “Fix”. If you look at previous ads, you will notice the Rogers and Fido brand signage together or one preceding the other, but in these latest ads, there is no Fido to be found anywhere.

Should current Fido customers be worried about having to switch to Rogers now to get the Jesus Phone?

Could this be the final nail in the coffin for Fido and the iPhone?

What are your thoughts?

Well, I like Fido and I’ve been with them over 10 years now. They have better voice plan than Roger (though not by much since Roger’s take over, still an hour more on the evening), plus the Fido dollars do add up eventually. So I guess that means I’ll get on the eBay or Craigslist if I want the next iPhone.

  • It’s quite obvious that they want to shift all the higher paying customers over to Rogers and keep the value or discount customers over at Fido when they started the recent rebranding of Fido. With the recent charge of 15 cents per incoming text, they are forcing people like me to switch to Fido so that they can charge more for the customers that want to remain with Rogers. It’s sad, but I am optimistic that Globalive and others coming into the space will really bring some much needed competition and get rid of that profit grab also known as SAF (System Access Fee).

  • Jonk

That would be frigging shitty! So if I want the new iPhone and this is true, no doubt I would lose my $60 fido dollars and get a crappier plan… And potentially not have 6GB. This better not happen! It’s the same damn network same company they should let us run what phones we want… Last year was perfect I got my phone go problems – I hope apple has something to say because if it’s too much hassle I just won’t be doing it!

jonk- you don’t own the company, fido, so you can’t run the phones you want. Don’t like it leave it, leave… stop being a wuss about such materialistic things. Apple has a say to a certain point. If the cell phone company has supporting plans and data, then it’s fine for a launch. If not, they reconsider and choose another.

  • This will be the biggest disappointment. I have Fido over 10 yrs. I use their service since day 1 when they launched their service in Vancouver. I am so upset that I will not even switch to Rogers…… My plan is just get an unlocked version from Hong Kong. Keep my Fido account for a few months. Then wait for Telus/Bell to have their HSDPA network

Thanks to wireless number portability I can take my number to any carrier and Fido would loose another customer if they don’t offer what I’m looking for at a reasonable price. Wireless is like the stock market… you have to be following it all the time cause it keeps changing so much.

I’ve been with FIDO for 10 years as well and no way I’ll be going to Rogers plans. I did the math and it would be more expensive for me plus you loose per second billing.

Once everyone is running 3G/4G networks, I’ll be looking around for sure. And that just happens to be around the time my contact will expire.

The iPhone is the thing right now but other smartphones will come…

I already can’t stand FIDO since those sycophants from Rogers took them over. Rogers sucks big times. If this becomes reality I will switch over to Videotron when their 3G network comes on line and Rogers can stick their fidodollars where the sun don’t shine with their assmonkey texting phones. Goodby Mr. Rogers

Uhh… Mansbridge – the point is that we have no “real” choice here – rogers can do whatever the hell they want being the only gsm provider – where exactly do you think I should leave with my iPhone hmm? Moreover, the iPhone isn’t like any other phone – apple customers tend to upgrade much more frequently and it would be leaving out a lot of customers to go strictly with Rogers – I am a pretty conservative, pro-capitalist but I cannot stand Rogers’ monopoly on the gsm market. Furthermore, I am not being a “wuss” but am simply irritated that I should have to jump through so many hoops to get the phone potentially – I don’t care about paying more but man let me have the phone on the network I bought my 3G on. If I had been told that the phone wouldn’t have been sold on fido this year when I signed my my 3 year contract I wouldn’t have signed. I realize my original post was somewhat emotional but man this would just suck – plain and simple

  • I fully support Blackberry as they are Canadian, but in terms of a real smartphone experience I am not a fan. I can’t stand the tiny QWERTY keyboard, tiny screens, and ruthless GUI. Not fun at all. But, of course, to each their own. 😉

I don’t plan on getting the next iPhone. But I would like the 4th gen or 5th gen iPhone with fido. They r the best provider in Quebec [in my opinion] . This would suck big time! Probably get an unlocked one. really wouldn’t want to swith to rogers!!!never!!!!!!!

This is a very bad news for all of us who wanted to continue with Fido for the next iPhones….

I wanted to buy my next iPhone after the second year of my 3 year contract but now I will have to keep my 3G for 2 more years…..

At least the good news is that we will probably have more carriers at that time but… humm…. my plan from the start was to switch iPhones at 2 years interval.

Haa you know who’s to blame? Customers that choose to get the iPhone without a data package….. I work as a sales dsm for fido and with fido customers tend to get the iphone without data, now when that happens it basically drops sales and the subsidized price for the phone is still far too high, people that get the phone without data are such losers u don’t get the phone to look pretty, u get it for functionality…. If your not getting data stop trying to get the iPhone ..:.

i got my phone without data and i got it to took pretty AND for functionality ;). as a student, i personally couldn’t afford the extra $360 + taxes for data, which i could get anywhere i please via wi-fi (home/on campus/friends’ houses/some public areas+shops). i didn’t feel the need to be constantly connected. granted there’s lower functionality, but i am just as satisfied with my phone ^^ you should just tell every person who doesn’t have data on their smart phone to stop getting smart phones, lol.

In addition, I love how you compose yourself online as a DSM for Fido. I feel totally confident bringing my business and letting people such as yourself handle my transactions. Your lack of spelling, grammar, and punctuation totally convinces me to stop getting iPhones (smart phones) without a data plan.

Lack of grammer sure I might have misspelled a certain word wrong, no biggy but u get what I’m saying. People that can’t afford a data plan should not get one, rather a smart phone. If you don’t utilize a phone to it’s full potential, don’t bother getting it. Data is priced quite high here in Canada but regardless. Now that u didn’t end up getting data on that iPhone, means well no next gen iPhone for u….. Well not from fido at least…. Moral of the story is get data. More sales equals newer phones.

“If you don’t utilize a phone to it’s full potential, don’t bother getting it.” – That’s not the point. Many smart phones have tons of functions and features that don’t require the data plan to use it. There are a lot of people in the world that are unaware of the potential their cell phones, dumb and smart phones alike. The point is people get a phone because they like it in one way or another. It’s not your problem whether or not I use my phone to its full potential as long as Fido gets their service fees from me. I spend pretty much 70%-80% of my time in a Wi-Fi area so it’s not worth it for me to get a data plan.

“More sales equals newer phones.” – Newer phones equals more sales. It could go both ways. I understand that a provider will offer a wider variety if they can profit from it but manufacturers will continue to make newer phones because they want to make money and providers need to keep up newer products to attract new users and keep existing users.

“Now that u didn’t end up getting data on that iPhone, [means well no] next gen iPhone for u…..” – This is where grammar impedes meaning. =P I wasn’t looking at getting a new iPhone because I am happy with my 3G. ^^

So far I’m not attracted to the iphone due to a lot of it’s limitations like multitasking, no java and flash support so it can’t render true desktop internet experience like my nokia n95 can do via skyfire, camera sucks, no video so i can’t take video and post it directly to internet but other smartphones can do, no navigation software. so i guess i’ll stick with another smartphone bec i can do a lot of cool things with it instead of just playing games.

Definitly not a future shop rep but again I’ll say it out right buying an iPhone without data is like buying a car without wheels, personally people that get blackberrys without data plans are pathetic as well. What thier excuse? Oh I needed an organizer…. Get any phone, they all have organizers. As for manufacturers making new phones, your right they will continue and we won’t see them at fido well see some more Ericsson t303 models lol.

iPhones and Blackberries are way better organizers than ordinary phones =b, your arguements are very weak. Buying an iPhone without data is like buying a cheaper iPod Touch with a phone and camera. Just stop playing the role of the manager and take a step back and see that we are normal people who want the best/coolest products at the best price and there are many people who simply can’t afford/don’t need data. Stop complaining that people should stop buying smart phones – we do what we want!

Your arguments are not compelling either. Just cause u can’t afford it does not mean u should speak for others, please don’t try to educate me about cell phones. By the way just so u know the phones called the iPhone 3G, I’m sure if ppl wanted no data they could have bought the first gen iPhone unlocked. This could go on forever but it obviously going to end up being your word against mine. So here’s the conclusion the day u wanna hop on a data plan u go do it, and you’ll see, you will end up enjoying it far better. For folks like you, an iPod touch and a simple phone is the way to go…. Cheers

iPhone In Canada: My challenge to you is to draw up an easy to follow tutorial on how to unlock an iPhone, and setup Skype or JaJah to make calls over IP when available or other chip cards from fido/rogers etc. We need to plan an end run around GSM schumcks: Rogers Fido.

dammit!!! this info really screwed me up since i ordered the current one recently. But luckily customer relations said that i can return it since you always have 15days and then you can order the new one and reset your plan possibly even negotiate a better one. And get the new pricing etc etc. A pain in the butt but after a couple weeks should end up with the new one.
