Possible iPhone $100 Price Drop?

Share:

There’s been some buzz out there in the blogosphere about a possible price drop on the iPhone and iPod Touch. 9to5Mac got a tip from an insider source that the following changes might take place prior to the late February Apple Event happening at the end of the month. The rumored changes are as follows:

  • 8GB iPhone/iPod Touch will get exiled to Siberia
  • 16GB iPhone – $399
  • 16GB iPod Touch – $299
  • 32GB iPod Touch – $399

We all know that Apple is #1 when it comes to keeping secrets about release dates and such. I pity the fool that buys a Mac computer, only to find out a week later that a newer model has been released! Anyways, this could be the same path the iPhone is taking, as memory prices have been dropping, plus the announcement of a 3G iPhone is inevitable. Remember, Chief Executive of AT&T, Randall Stephenson, spilled the beans in November about a new iPhone coming our way.

So, many of you are asking “should I buy an iPhone now, or wait?” Well, if you were going to wait, you’d be missing out on using an iPhone for starters. Plus, if you do wait for the new iPhone to be announced, who knows how long it’ll be before the hacking community can jailbreak and unlock it. You could wait for the iPhone to be released in Canada, but that probably won’t happen for at least a 100 years (thanks Rogers!).

For all you Canucks out there pondering how to acquire an iPhone, read my post about how to buy one. This is the time to purchase since the 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 OTB software unlock is now out! Stop procrastinating and go get one!

OMG FIRST COMMENT! This time I really will beat you Dusty!!!!!

But about the post, I really hope that Apple drops their prices, makes everyone who doesn’t have one happy yet :D. And who knows, maybe they will say something about Canada come late February.

I’m holding off until early March, by then the 1.1.3 OTB will be down to a fine science. Plus finances are holding me back for the moment. I completely agree though, if you’re going to wait for Rogers, you’ll be waiting forever! I DO NOT think the recent data rate changes are an indicator of an impending iPhone announcement, and competition from Telus or new companies is still a long ways off- so Rogers can afford to run the clock on the iPhone. A quite truthfully, if they bugger around too long, I hope Apple says, “Screw you!” and waits the extra couple of months for a competitor to be ready. I know I would immediately jump ship and move to Apple’s choice. I’ll be leaving Bell and moving to Rogers to get the iPhone, but my relationship with them will be one of convenience only. The moment another alternative comes along– I’m gone.

I was going to get my sister to bring back an Iphone for me from the US but she declined because of the hassle. Perhaps it was a sign…haha. I too will wait until early March when I plan to make a trip down. Also, the event is rumored to be Feb.26th, from other web sources.

I honestly don’t expect much to come out of the Feb 26th event that will impact my decision. I think people are dreaming that the 3G model will be out this early in the year. AT&T has only just announced it’s expanding it’s network, and the recent memory upgrade is meant to hold people over who’ve been complaining about the 8GB memory maximum. Unless it’s an entirely different model (which I doubt), the new 16GB version will be the only upgrade until the fall, when the 3G is released and another memory bump happens.

Since I’m living in Canada, and don’t get any direct support anyways, I might as well buy in now. The 3G enhancement won’t help me, since I’ll only be browsing via WiFi (ala the iPod Touch) anyways.

    Where is Dusty anyway? 🙂

Hey, if Apple does come out with an iPhone that works on a 3G network, doesn’t that open up the Canadian market for iPhones to work on Telus or Bell networks as well? Or am I missing something. (Indeed my knowledge of cell networks is limited).

No. The issue isn’t 3G vs EDGE. It’s that the iPhone is is configured to work on GSM, while Telus and Bell work on a different network called CDMA. GSM is the monopoly that Rogers has in Canada.

Some people have wondered if Apple might build a CDMA configured iPhone, but apparently GSM is more popular worldwide, so Apple decided to go with the network to which it could sell more phones globally.

Unfortunately, it seems like the only thing that could motivate Rogers to release the iPhone is the threat of someone else being able to do it. Rogers (and Fido, who Rogers owns) is currently the only GSM provider in Canada, so there is no motivator for them to lower data rates (which is surely the sticking point for Apple). Telus has talked about moving to GSM, and an upcoming bandwidth auction might produce a new competitor (Quebecor), but even if either of these things happened today, it would be well over a year before they’d actually be ready to launch.

It’s a VERY frustrating situation, which is why I’ve decided to go the unlock route, as I can’t see any short term resolution. If 6 months or a year down the road the iPhone is release officially, I’ll sell and buy a new one up here (when the 3G version will be available).

Busy day today and didn’t have time to check out whats new on the internet…
I have a feeling the price will drop in a couple months or very soon, that’s how it always works. I’m still thinking of selling my 8GB iPhone and purchase a 16GB but I’m also just thinking of waiting *if* Apple releases a 2nd Gen iPhone…. (They will, just in time 😛 ) O well, the phone works good with SealthSIM haha and really no need to use Geohotz unlock…
Lets hope for some price drops! hehe

Good news again bud! (Even though I read it on Mac Rumors before this, shhhh 😛 lol )

    Hey,

Thanks for the posts. Great blog. I finally managed to “virginise” my iPhone that I had upgraded to 1.1.3. through iTunes. I’m back at 1.1.1. for now but I plan on upgrading in the not too distant future.

One final note, which has nothing to do with this post… But I was unable to receive sms’ with Rogers. So I called *611 and told them my problem. They resetted my account, I had to turn off my cell, and when I turned it back on, everything was okay.

Great blog! And thanks for all the help.

This looks like good news (Although I did JUST buy my 8GB iPhone) I think that I will wait for a release of a 2G iPhone before I buy another! With any luck they might be up to 32GB or higher by then!! 🙂
