Twitter to Remove Locked Accounts from Follower Counts This Week

Twitter has announced today it will be removing locked accounts from follower accounts this week worldwide, a move explained as “part of our ongoing and global effort to build trust and encourage healthy conversation.”

Twitter says accounts get locked when they detect “sudden changes” in account behaviour. When this happens, their accounts are locked and these owners must validate their account and reset their passwords to regain access. For these locked accounts, they will soon be removed globally this week.

As a result of the change, Twitter says “the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down.”

A Twitter Canada spokesperson confirmed to iPhone in Canada that “a number of Canadian accounts will be affected by this news.”

The social network says removing locked accounts won’t impact their monthly active user or daily active user metrics. The social network’s most recent quarter reported 336 million monthly active users.
