Apple just sent out the following email to MobileMe subscribers:
Dear MobileMe member,
We’d like to share some exciting news with you about iCloud — Apple’s upcoming cloud service, which stores your content and wirelessly pushes it to your devices. iCloud integrates seamlessly with your apps, so everything happens automatically. Available this fall, iCloud is free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users.
What does this mean for you as a MobileMe member?
When you sign up for iCloud, you’ll be able to keep your MobileMe email address and move your mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.
Your MobileMe subscription will be automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After that date, MobileMe will no longer be available.
When iCloud becomes available this fall, we will provide more details and instructions on how to make the move. In the meantime, we encourage you to learn more about iCloud.

Why would I want to stay with Mobile Me until 2012 when I can switch over to the superior, FREE, iCloud? Â Where’s the WIN for existing MobileMe customers with that one?

All this “Free” year extension stuff is a little bizarre. If apple is replacing a paid service with a free service, what the heck is the use of extending the old service “free of charge”… for continued access to the web versions of the MobileMe services? Gallery? iDisk? Come on!
I’d prefer a pro-ratered refund on my remaining paid subscription or an iTunes credit. Â Aren’t loyal MobileMe subscribers owed a little more for sticking with apple on this particular troublesome project?

Lame… I just renewed in February and feel ripped off… Like another poster said, why would I accept an extension of a service as consolation that would otherwise be free? Absolute garbage. I called into apple today looking for a refund of some sort, the rep gave me a canned response about a free extension. I got frustrated and decided I’ll just wait and see what the internet community will do to fix this…

Here’s what might make sense… Apple is in the business of selling hardware, so why not advertise “free 5GB with every device”? Then, allow us to add that 5GB to a single account. So, if we have a Mac, iPad, iPhone(s), iPod(s) in the family, then we get much more storage.
Has anyone heard how much extra storage will cost? For backup services, they would have to match or beat a service like Carbonite. What will happen with our personal domain settings?

I have an Intel Mac Mini for work but an iMac G5 (PPC) for personal use (meaning my .mac account is set up there.) No way to use iCloud on a PPC, and once MobileMe is gone, I’ll just have to switch machines and hope my peeps don’t mind me using the Mini for all my personal stuff too. Since I work at home maybe I won’t tell them HA. I suppose Apple is giving us old schlubs some free time to migrate, and that’s not a bad thing.
