The Smartphone Revolution in Canada [Infographic]

The fine folks over at TechVibes have put together an interesting infographic documenting smarphone usage in Canada:

It’s interesting to note the Blackberry is most widely-used at 41%, and the iPhone 31%, and Android at 12%. It’s easy to see RIM in the lead when they have a tonne of various models, and a lower price compared to the iPhone. I’m pretty sure the percentage of Android users will soon catch up to RIM, given the vast choice of Android hardware available.

What do you think the future of smartphone usage will be in Canada?

The infographic was based on their analysis of sources from: comScore, StatsCan, Quorus Consulting, the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, Cisco, May 2011.

I’m not surprised about RIM’s numbers.. Every provider offers a free BB with a 3 year contract.. Haven’t really seen free iPhones..  I suspect Android to catch up though.

I have also seen a lot of promo’s for BB where you get them at a really cheap price or even free, no wonder they account for a higher percentage. Recently I think people have been moving more towards Apple products as they set the standards high and RIM fails to come even close.

RIM’s failure to innovate is hitting them hard compared to Apple and Android offerings. They’re focusing efforts in developing countries, that outta tell you something.

I’d like to see the stats for the US. 2 for 1 Blackberries, you gotta love that.

All this talk of iMessages.

A- it will require data
B- it’s only between iPhones as is bbm

So what’s all the hoopla about? I’ve been in this game long enough to understand it’s not going to change much. So what if the device has a bbm’esque function. People with bbm aren’t going to run off and buy an iPhone anytime soon.

One of the longest arguments of ‘holding on to my BB’ I hear from friends is
the coveted BBM.

Now that there is a free messaging system for all iOS devices, BB users have
one less reason to mention when ‘holding out’ for an iPhone. The only
argument I can see left if the famous BB keyboard.

Guys, you are forgetting the #1 reason why RIM is ahead. Every business that hands a smartphone to an employee is a BB because of security and configs. Dat’s it, dat’s all!

And after owning many many different phones I think that most people might agree that buttons are the first thing to break … I personally prefer the iPhone keyboard!

You’re talking a million people given a BB by employers in North America, alone.

I don’t see the keyboard as a BB defence. Lots of droid phones have drop out keyboards. I really like iOS and Android, but hate BB. The keyboard is no selling point to me. I agree with fragility, I see far too many of them break anyway.

iMessage being “one less reason for holding out” for BB users doesn’t *quite* hold up. If BBM is their sticking point, that means many of their BBM friends are stuck too, so unless they ALL switch to an iOS 5 device at about the same time, those who switch will lose the advanced messaging features to those friends.

And yes, the physical keyboard is still a big thing for some people.

To me this looks true. As I take the transit system to and from work everyday I see who has what devices. The Blackberry’s are everywhere, but the iPhones are pretty popular too.
As for Android… still not quite there yet.

Also I don’t get why playing music is really low…. I am positive that most of the folks I see are listening to music AND doing the other things

QNX is the only thing that can save BB, their OS just sux now, and their tablet is the only thing with a decent user interface. Sadly they are pushing 7.0 and that’s not compatible with their older phones, not even the Torch so they continue to shoot themselves in the foot. I don’t thing RIM needs to worry about Apple or Android, because they will kill them selves.

Have you ever notice the number of people who have both, its shocking, they listen to music with their iPhones and text with the BB its crazy. the whole point of getting and  iPhone was to have everything in one unit, I think if your a teenager then get the bb for bbm, other then that, grow up and get a real smartphone.
