Canada Announces ‘E-labelling’, Opening Market to Wearables Such as Apple Watch

The Federal Government today has announced Canada is the sixth country in the world to adopt electronic labelling, or e-labelling, which allows digital labels instead of the previous physical visible label requirement on electronic devices.

The Harper Government says this new digital labelling system will open up the Canadian market to wearables, citing specifically Apple Watch and Google Glass:

Effective today, technology manufacturers will be able to give consumers mandatory information about their devices electronically. Canada is the sixth county worldwide to bring in e-labelling, opening Canada’s markets to the latest wireless wearable devices such as Google Glass and Apple Watch.

E-labelling allows companies to make changes to device information remotely and can help reduce costs, plus also reduce barriers for new devices to enter the market quickly, allowing consumers to purchase new products faster.

Industry Minister James Moore said in a statement “Today’s announcement marks another step our government is taking to help Canadian businesses and consumers take full advantage of the digital economy. Through e-labelling, both consumers and manufacturers will benefit from access to new market devices.”

Canada joins the United States, Australia, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Costa Rica as the only countries in the world that have adopted e-labelling.
