iPhone Belongs in Your Pocket, Not on the Road: Porsche CEO
In an interview with regional newspaper Westfalen-Blatt, Porsche Chief Executive Oliver Blume has made it clear that his company has no plans to join the likes of luxury carmakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, who are seeking to build self-driving vehicles. “One wants to drive a Porsche by oneself,” Blume said, adding that Porsche wants its drivers to remain fully in control at the wheel (via Reuters).
Blume also said that “an iPhone belongs in your pocket, not on the road”, explaining why Porsche did not team up with any big technology company. According to the Boston Consulting Group, the market penetration of vehicles with autonomous features is expected to reach 13% by 2025, which would represent a market of around $42 billion.
Stuttgart-based Porsche, which stresses the performance and feel of its cars in its marketing, does plan to offer hybrid versions of all its models in the foreseeable future as it struggles to lower emissions across the fleet. A plug-in hybrid of the 911 model with a range of 50 km (31 miles) will hit the market as early as 2018, Blume said.
Porsche also plans to spend about 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) on production facilities at its biggest plant to build the Mission E, its first-ever all-electric model.
Porsche plans to launch its first all-electric model, Mission E, with over 600 horsepower and a range of over 500km within the next five years.
Currently, Porsche supports Apple’s CarPlay technology in its vehicles.

I agree it’s great that Porsche continues to focus on their driving dynamics. However, I’m not sure what an iPhone has to to with autonomous driving tech. Sounds like the Porsche CEO is a bit confused.
You should re-read this article, sounds more like Usman is trying to write a story out of nothing to me, just as long as iPhone/Apple is somehow mentioned. But it’s Monday, let’s just cut him some slack.
I still find Porsche CEO’s comments a little strange. Ok, so he’s saying Porsche is about driving. I totally agree. “No Autonomous Tech for Porsche. That’s also fine. What does having an iPhone in your pocket have to do with anything. And why has Porsche partnered with Apple to provide Carplay and then state that Porsche has not teamed up with any tech companies. The messaging is muddled.
Exactly. How Usman tries to tie the 2 together is not working very well here, it’s contradicting. Blume’s comment “iPhone belongs in your pocket, not on the road”, plus his stance on not building autonomous cars for Porsche, pretty much shows his passion and his believes of not mixing/taking away the joy of driving with an autonomous vehicle/technology. Again, re-read the article. What’s really being quoted, and what’s being written/interpreted? It’s just part of the job to “stir up the pot”.
I don’t think Usman is at fault here. He’s literally paraphrasing the Reuters article that he links to. I can’t see any pot stirring. The only one stirring the pot seems to be Porsche’s CEO. It’s Porsche’s CEO that is making contradicting statements about the iPhone. The autonomous driving issue is separate. Maybe I’m missing something that you’re seeing.

Sorry, just 2 cents from a long time reader.
It’s because many articles keep referring to electric autonomous vehicles as nothing more than a computer on wheels.
Next he’ll tell us that Apple’s “not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”
there will be benefits for a company to actually make a self drive version, just to get a leg up on it. The thing is, its going to happen, and with safety concerns i can see requirements from governments to car manufactures to have the option. just like safety belts and airbags.
Makes sense for a company like Porsche. The high end performance market will undoubtedly be one of the last bastion’s of fossil fuel burning, driver oriented, performance cars.
