‘Apple Watch 2’ May Have Built-in GPS, Hints Updated Nike+ App

As pointed out by PhoneArena, the description of the recently updated Nike+ running app for iOS seems to hint at the release of a GPS-enabled ‘Apple Watch 2’. Nike+ version 5.0 offers new features and functionality and promises to deliver “everything you need to run better”, as it rebrands itself to Nike+ Run Club.

The running app, which tracks and stores users’ pace, distance, elevation, heart rate, and mile splits, is tightly integrated with the Apple Watch in order to accomplish sourcing all this data. What’s most interesting in the recent update is its description, which notes that users can leave their phones at home and run with just the wearable, which can be accomplished if the Apple Watch has GPS.

Below is the official iTunes description:

What’s New in Version 5.0.0

Welcome to Nike+ Run Club

The Nike+ Running app is now the Nike+ Run Club app with a fresh, new and improved look.

– Coaching plans now adapt to your schedule and progress.
– More fun and personal post-run sharing than ever.
– Compare and compete with your friends by hash-tagging runs.
Leave your phone at home and run free with Apple Watch.

It appears safe to assume that owners of the second generation Apple Watch will be able to enjoy true location services without pairing with an iPhone or using distance estimation.

You can download the Nike+ Run Club 5.0 for free using this App Store link.

That doesn’t mean the watch has a GPS. The watch right now can be taken on a run and it tries to figure out how far you’ve gone based on your movement. It recommends that you take your phone with you the first couple of times so it can calibrate. What the Nike app update likely means is that on WatchOS 3 the Nike app can run on the watch without having the phone present, and can use the same movement tracking that the built in running app is using already to figure out how far you’ve gone (roughly) without the phone.
