YouTube Announces New 180-Degree 3D VR Video Format at Vidcon

YouTube has just announced the launch of a new 180-degree 3D VR video format called VR180 at Vidcon in California, that delivers 3-D video while capturing 180-degrees around you. The company says creators only have to worry about recording what’s in front of them while viewers get an immersive experience with a VR headset, or a video that looks just as great on a phone as any other video.

VR180 offers users of Google’s Daydream or Cardboard headsets as well as PlayStation VR users the ability to experience videos in immersive 3D, complete with the ability to look around. Furthermore, YouTube is partnering with major electronics companies, such as LG, Yi and Lenovo, to launch new VR180 cameras for as little as a couple hundred dollars, in time for the holiday season.

The Daydream team is working with several manufacturers to build cameras from the ground up for VR180. These cameras are not only great for creators looking to easily make VR content, but also anyone who wants to capture life’s highlights in VR. They will be as easy to use as point-and-shoot cameras, for around the same price. Videos and livestreams will be easy to upload to YouTube.

The company is also opening up a VR180 certification program, with Z CAM announced as one of its first partners. For more information, click here.
