Being First With New Features is No Longer Important, Admits Samsung

Speaking at the Unpacked press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung mobile chief D.J. Koh has admitted that the company’s obsession with being first has turned out to be meaningless, which is why Samsung is going to stop pumping out new features just to be first, The Korea Herald is reporting (via iDB).

Mr. Koh added that even though Samsung has a long history of firsts in the mobile industry, being first is no longer important. Instead, the South Korean company will now be offering more refined experiences in its future smartphones, tablets and other devices.

“We developed mobile phones earlier than China and were obsessed with being the world’s first and industry’s first rather than thinking about how this innovation would be meaningful to consumers. Being the first turns out to be meaningless today. Our strategy is to launch something that consumers believe is meaningful and valuable at the right time.

I believe it is a matter of perspective in terms of innovation. Now, the innovation is not about forcing technologies to customers but bringing convenient experiences in features that users actually use.”

He also answered questions about the company’s roadmap for innovation in hardware, sharing company’s plans to showcase Bixby 2.0 updates through the upcoming Galaxy Note 9. He said that a Bixby-powered smart speaker in partnership with Harman is also coming in the second half of 2018.

Koh noted that Samsung is also planning to have a 5G-capable smartphone ready in time for the expected 5G commercialization in 2019, and is already developing 5G core network equipment and chipsets in partnership with Korea’s SK Telecom.

I think he’s wrong. Apple has shown when features are truly great, like retina screens, multitouch on a phone, MagSafe etc. being first gives your company a lot of respect for leading the way. But if you’re first with a gimmick then of course it doesn’t matter to be first.

Their obsession to push new features was their differentiating quality from Apple’s. I think Chinese brands have taken over the mantle of being first to market with new features, albeit, not always a successful or needed feature.

In other news: Samsung admits being first to copy Apple is the key to success.

I was thinking that same thing.

What a convenient to make that statement, after some competitors are copying the notch, AR, and Animojies.

Translation; We don’t have any new features, and Apple is being too tight-lipped for us to rush their ideas to market before they do.

Having features are great but it can only go so far. Quality over quantity as I would say it and that is what Apple is doing in the next update and I assume every other company should follow. I never want to experience a big bug less alone a small bug. Minimum features should at least be one but improving other aspects of the phone without slowing down the whole phone itself would be nice.
