Survey Finds Older iPhone Models Selling Better Than iPhone X/8: Report

Based on their recent survey of 500 US Apple customers that purchased an iPhone, iPad, or Mac in the US in January-March 2018 period, analysts at Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) have found that sales of legacy iPhone models, including iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and iPhone SE, are squeezing the sales of newer iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X, according to data emailed to iPhone in Canada.

Chart

While the sample size for the survey is relatively small, it suggests iPhone buyers are willing to choose older, cheaper models that have many of the same features as the latest ones. The research found that the iPhone 8/8 Plus, and iPhone X accounted for 60% of US iPhone sales during the three month period, but the breakdown was iPhone 8 at 23%, iPhone 8 Plus at 21%, and iPhone X at 16%.

The year-old iPhone 7 and 7 Plus accounted for almost one-fifth of sales, and the two-year old iPhone 6S and 6S Plus had 13% of sales. The iPhone SE grabbed 8% of sales, which is down slightly from 11% in the year-ago quarter, and up slightly over the December 2017 quarter.

“We now have a full quarter of results for all of Apple’s new iPhones, and together they account for a smaller share of total sales than the newest phones did this time last year,” said Josh Lowitz, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder. “iPhone X saw its share fall to 16%, down from 20% in the December 2017 quarter. iPhone 8 and 8 Plus share improved relative to the December 2017 quarter, combining at 44% of sales, compared to 41% in the last quarter.”

“Based on these results, we expect Apple to report a lower ASP for the March 2018 quarter,” continued Lowitz. “Each quarter we calculate US-WARP, as a proxy for ASP. For the March 2018 quarter, we estimate US-WARP at $746, down from the $766 in the December 2017 quarter. This suggests that reported ASP in the March 2018 quarter is likely to decline.”

After the initial excitement over the iPhone X features, it seems the $1,000 USD flagship has settled into a much smaller share of sales than expected.

6s still the best bang for the buck. Double the ports, double the fun!

I hated my 6s at the end. Battery life was mediocre.

Bonus for the 6s – Apple will replace the battery for cheap!

Paid the $35 at the Apple store to have the batter replaced on my 6S Plus and battery life is amazing again, feels brand new and operates way faster due to the lack of throttling. I want Apple to give me a fair and legitimate reason to upgrade, but so far they’ve not succeeded.

It’s been the same, iterative product since the iPhone 6. It’s a better phone every year, but it’s hardly different from the previous year’s design.

Looks to me as if the iPhone X is a bigger step forward than the iphone 4 to the iphone 5?

You called that right. iPhone X was declared dead today, they are not manufacturing any more units. What is in inventory is it. RIP.

I think these companies will eventually see that… NO.. we (most people) are not going to spend almost 1500 bucks for the new model with 128gb+ storage..

Honestly I was underwhelmed by the iPhone X.. and I ended up purchasing a iPhone 7+ 128 GB for 600 cash. Since I haven’t been able to jailbreak it stably yet, there is no need for anything up and above GPU wise..

Honestly, although a little dramatic, and I really hate to use this comparison, this is the outlook BlackBerry (RIM) took and they failed hard… You can only continue to sell a closed ecosystem if your shit is consistently performing better than other close competitors.. which is no longer the case..

Tim Cook is the new Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis.. so fucking out to lunch that he doesnt even know they already beat the space race to Mars.

Good analogy. It will be interesting this year as I don’t think Apple blames the poor sales on price, but lack of product at launch. Since they have already started production for 2018 models, I’m guessing the price won’t be coming down. Luckily they have other products out there (unlike blackberry) so they won’t die a fast death. I’m not optimistic Apples sales on iPhones will do any better in 2019.

Well said. Without JB, there is no need for a fast device. I mean now with games like Fortnite and PUBG on iOS, it would be nice to have a newer device than 7/7+ but it is not needed. I as returned my X after first week and went back to my 7 Plus. It was nothing special and I couldn’t justify a +$700 price tag after potentially reselling my 7+ 256GB.

I bought a white iPhone 8 Plus 256GB. I got tired of the lag on my iPhone 6 Plus 128GB. I gave it to my mom and after I updated her phone to 11.3 it doesn’t lag anymore. All regrets of upgrading and I could have wait another year but I do enjoy the extra perks of the 8. I honestly love Apple products since they work together. Especially iMessage.

that is apples problem with updates. apple updates older phones so people are fine with it for many years. also the iphone 6 is almost the same as iphone 6sss. so for almost everyone the older iphones still fine making great pictures and imessage.
