City of Winnipeg Partners with Shaw for Free Wi-Fi at Over 130 City Facilities

Over 130 facilities in the City of Winnipeg are set to gain free Wi-Fi, thanks to a new partnership with Shaw Communications.

According to a city press release, both residents and visitors will be able to connect to free Wi-Fi hotspots under the “ShawGuest” network, at various locations throughout the city.

“Whether it’s for work, play, or just staying in touch, feeling connected is an important part of our everyday lives,” said Mayor Brian Bowman, in a statement. “Access to Wi-Fi is an important resource for residents no matter where they are in our city. With the support of Shaw, we can now offer free Wi-Fi at nearly all of our community centres, indoor pools, arenas, and libraries.”

Previously, free Shaw Go Wi-Fi hotspots in Winnipeg at civic facilities were limited to Shaw customers only, but that will soon change, as the 2013 Facilities Attachment License Agreement between the City and Shaw was amended.

Chris Kucharski, President, Consumer, Shaw Communications, said, “Whether it’s before a hockey game, after swimming laps or during a community event, the City of Winnipeg’s free public Wi-Fi network will provide residents and visitors with more ways to stay connected at city facilities.”

Back in April, a year-long pilot project was launched to offer free Wi-Fi to Winnipeg Transit passengers, with a dozen buses trialling the project, with a report due next year to the Standing Policy Committee on Innovation.
