Uber Suggests Would-Be Drivers in B.C. to Obtain Class 4 Driver’s Licence

With new ride-hailing regulations in the province making it a requirement, Uber has started encouraging would-be drivers in B.C. to obtain a Class 4 driver’s licence and be ready to hit the road as soon as ride-hailing becomes legal in the province, CTV News is reporting.

In order to to get a Class 4 driver’s licence, drivers first need to take a learner’s test followed, by a commercial road test which also includes a medical exam. Applicants are required to be at least 19 years old and already hold a full-privilege driver’s licence. According to the ICBC website, total fees for the learner’s test, road test, and the medical exam is around $83.

“Metro Vancouver will need drivers like you to make ridesharing a reality,” it reads. “You’ve shown interest in becoming an Uber partner so we wanted to give you a heads-up on the steps that you can take to ensure that you’re road ready when ridesharing launches.

Getting enough driver-partners qualified is the first of several steps before Uber can make a decision whether to launch in Metro Vancouver.”

It must be noted that there’s still no guarantee that Uber is coming to B.C. as the company says it will first review the regulations that the government has designated before making any decision.

The Passenger Transportation Board is currently conducting consultations and is expected to submit its regulations later this year.
