macOS 11.3 to Add Support for AMD RX 6800/6900 XT

The latest beta release of macOS 11.3 has confirmed upcoming support for AMD’s RX 6800/6900 XT, the company’s latest high-end graphics cards which debuted last year in October (via MacityNet).

The Radeon RX 6800 and 6900 XT graphics cards are AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s equivalent video cards, such as the RTX 3080, and should be usable via Thunderbolt external boxes (eGPUs) with Intel-based Macs. Currently, Macs with Apple’s M1 processors do not support eGPUs.

“Support for eGPUs is one of the strengths of Intel-based Macs compared to new ARM-based Macs. An eGPU allows you to increase graphics performance when used with professional apps, 3D gaming, VR content creation, and more. eGPUs are supported by any Mac with an Intel processor and Thunderbolt 3 ports.”

In addition to supporting AMD’s latest graphic cards, the latest Big Sur beta also brings support for PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers, new customizations in Safari, and more.
