WhatsApp Testing Chat Migration Between iOS and Android

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that enables users to migrate their chat history from an iOS device to an Android device.

Since the advent of WhatsApp, users who have switched between an iOS device and Android, or vice versa, have been put into an unfortunate predicament. Currently, there is no way to properly migrate old chat history or transcripts between the two. This means users would have to forgo their chat logs when using a new device. In the past, the use of a third-party tool or app to transfer chat logs have been considered a breach of WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.

Luckily, WABetaInfo has reported that WhatsApp is now actively testing a new feature that enables migrations between the two operating systems.

According to the report, a future software update will introduce the feature to both iOS and Android devices. Based on the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, once both devices have installed the latest version of the app, the app will notify the user that the new feature is accessible.

As it currently stands, WhatsApp on iOS uses iCloud to back up and transfer chat logs between Apple devices. On Android, WhatApp utilizes Google Drive. The new feature appears to mitigate that and allow for a more streamlined experience for a user that perhaps uses both devices or is simply transitioning from one to the other.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a release window of when to expect the software update to be available.
