Samsung Announces the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Adopting Galaxy Note Features

Today, Samsung has announced the brand new Galaxy lineup. During today’s Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S22 Ultra, with preorders available starting today. The new device officially launches on February 25th.

Samsung’s Unpacked event gave us a look at a collection of new products arriving this year. Amongst them, Samsung revealed the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the Galaxy Tab S8 Series tablet. Though, for users who have taken a liking to the Galaxy Note over generations, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should spark interest.

First up, the design of the S22 Ultra is made up of Armour Aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both sides. It features a 6.8-inch Edge QHD+ AMOLED display. The smartphone is capable of providing up to a 120Hz frame rate with a 240Hz Touch Sampling Rate in Game Mode. Memory options range from 8GB to 12 GB with upwards of 1TB of expandable storage.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is touted as the “absolute best” the flagship series has to offer users. As such, Samsung is bringing built-in S-Pen support to the S22 Ultra. Samsung is taking the productivity features of the Galaxy Note and as it sunsets that model. Those features have then been transitioned over to the S22 Ultra.

The battery capacity of the S-Pen remains at 5,000mAh. However, latency has been reduced from 9ms down to a staggering 2.8ms. Samsung has also improved the S-Pen’s prediction algorithm so it can better predict which direction the user will draw. The Wacom IC of the S-Pen has also been improved to provide speeds of 480 circuits per second. The Galaxy S22 Ultra also offers an advanced Handwriting to Text feature, supporting 88 languages.

Additionally, the S22 Ultra features a respectable camera array and processing power. The 5-lens camera array, featuring a 108MP sensor, powering the Wide camera. The array also supports a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera and a 10MP Telephoto lens. The Galaxy S22 Ultra offers Pro Mode and the downloadable Expert Raw app to use. In terms of camera systems, the device supports an AI-based Auto Focus, Super Steady System, and Super HDR.

Nightography is a huge focus this year. Samsung has partnered with Snapchat to offer Super Resolution Night mode within the app. The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s NPU allows the AI to sharpen images and video in low-light conditions. Samsung also introduced a new feature called Auto Framerate. This feature automatically adjusts the framerate based on lighting conditions. It can increase the framerate from 30FPS up to 60FPS if needed.

Alongside the S-Pen’s productivity improvements, Samsung Notes is receiving two major upgrades. The first is ‘Quick Note,’ which enables users to more easily attach or link content via a Pop Up note and streamlines the sharing process. The second feature is dubbed ‘Collaboration View’. Using this feature, users can sync between the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the newly announced Tab S8 Series. Settings between apps can be synced between the two, enabling further productivity perks. On top of that, Auto Framing support is being added. The Galaxy S22 Ultra can track up to 10 people and frame the picture accordingly.

To power the new features, the Galaxy S22 Ultra supports a 4nm processor. Samsung has adopted ARM’s new microarchitecture.

Security is one of the tentpole facets Samsung is focusing on, alongside better processing, Once again, Samsung Knox Vault is made available to secure passwords, Blockchain keys, and other sensitive data.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will be available on February 25th starting at $1,649.99 CAD. The device will be available in Phantom White, Phantom Black, Green, and Burgundy.
