Nintendo Switch 18.1.0 Update Removes Integrations With X

Nintendo has finally ceased to support X (formerly Twitter) on its Switch console. This is the last major piece of gaming hardware to axe X integrations, following in the footsteps of PlayStation and Xbox.
Via the 18.1.0 software update, users can no longer link their X account to their Switch. As noted in a blog post published by Nintendo, the update was released late on June 10th. While offering some minor stability improvements, the bulk of the upgrade nixed the integrations of X.
As part of the update, users can no longer “Post to Twitter” when sharing from the ‘Album’ option on Nintendo Switch. Additionally, users are not able to post Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album in the ‘Home’ menu to Smash World in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app. Finally, the update removes the ability to link X from user settings.
Early last month, Nintendo announced that it would be pulling support for X. The company has still not clarified why support would be ending. However, the prevailing theory was that the policy change was in response to X’s API access. In 2023, X has removed free unrestricted support to the platform’s API. Those wishing to lean on X integration would have to adopt one of the tiered subscriptions that scale depending on the usage. For a larger-scale ‘Enterprise tier,’ Nintendo would be expected to pay at least $42,000 USD (around $57,631 CAD) per month.
In 2023, both PlayStation and Xbox removed their integrations with the platform. As with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft did not outright point to the API updates as the reasoning behind the changes.
