Apple Approves Epic Games Store in Europe After Outcry
Apple on Friday said it has approved Epic Games’ marketplace app for iPhones and iPads in Europe.
This change comes after escalating tensions between the tech giant and the Fortnite creator, which accused Apple of stalling its efforts to bring its own app marketplace to iOS devices.
The approval concerns the Epic Sweden AB Marketplace and is unrelated to the already approved Fortnite app, according to Apple. The company stated that the latest disagreement did not involve the popular game itself, reports Reuters.
Prior to Apple’s announcement, Epic revealed that Apple had twice rejected its documents for launching the Epic Games Store. The rejections were based on similarities in the design of certain buttons and labels to those used by Apple’s App Store.
Epic defended its design choices, stating, “We are using the same ‘Install’ and ‘In-app purchases’ naming conventions that are used across popular app stores on multiple platforms, and are following standard conventions for buttons in iOS apps.”
The company called Apple’s rejection on X, “arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA (Digital Markets Act).” Epic also said that it had shared its concerns with the European Commission.
At this point, Epic Games and Apple just downright hate each other. The saga continues…
